morphE

morphE is a visual novel slightly animated in flash. It updates short segments every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 7am EST.

After their rescue from a madwoman's hellish subterranean caverns, five humans have their eyes opened to the dark truth lurking under normal society. A "benefactor" takes them in, but he's a cold-blooded killer with a deadly fixation on the new mages. In a world of magic, mages, and far creeper creatures, can he be trusted? Can anyone?

Warning: morphE involves themes of brutal violence, sexuality (gay, straight, and other), and much cruelty. If dark or adult content offends you, this may not be your cup of tea.

@Guest: While I understand entirely your side of it, and sometimes having even a little is better as a fan, it's not better on my end because it would be a constant feeling of guilt and stress that I should be working on it. That was kinda the method we had been doing for the last couple of updates we did, which were extremely sporadic. And we got comments (understandably) curious when to expect the next update and hoping to read more. And it just made my life harder anxietywise because the responsibility felt like a sword hanging over me all the time. This is why we basically decided it was better to be clear "this is done and don't expect any updates" because then the expectation is clear to both you guys and myself that there's not an update being worked on. I'm very happy you enjoyed it and want to read more, but clearly marking it as a project that I'm done with has helped my emotional stability a lot and I think it helps you guys as fans to not leave you hoping for an ending that won't happen.
"Thanks so much for coming back to see what we finished at least! I feel sad that we didn't get to give it a formal end, because honestly I love all these characters and wish I could share more of their story with you guys."

Nice to see that you appreciate my input.

"But finishing even on accelerated timeline would've taken probably 2 years and it just wasn't a possibility with our schedules. I would rather be formal and tell you all a firm "it's over" than leave it hanging hoping we can make 1-2 small updates every couple of months and still not ever really finish it at that rate."

Well I and probably a fair few others would agree that something is better then nothing.

I know I am quite late to the party in saying this but I think its quite a shame to see this story die unfinished. I started reading when chapter three was still unfinished and I followed the story avidly for the next few years, though around chapter seven I stopped paying attention for awhile due to a number of things in my personal life demanding my full attention and now that I've come back I find this very unfortunate surprise. This was a very interesting and gripping story with enjoyable characters its sad that its ended prematurely and will never get an official conclusion.
@burningtyger: It's a bit sad to let it go but it's best to know when to say goodbye. I doubt these guys will fully die, at least in some ways. They make their little cameos around in Alexis' work, and I can't say what will happen in my own writing future but this post is to be sure it's clear that we don't have any plans for more for the forseeable future. If there ever is, I will post a link on here for you guys, but there are no plans for anything like that.
I Am also sad to see it go. Perhaps someday you could consider making an ordinary comic out of the rest of the tale, or writing some stories...
Another idea
@ChibiSilverWings: There might be a subplot with Adresias Kids and Ken, maybe the kids will get possesed or something like that, just a though I had today in the subway. Regarding Rping, I don't know if you can help me but currently I am looking for a system for a game that plays in late victorian times and suports secret agent stuff. Do you have an idea?
@The_Hyena_King: @The_Hyena_King: I'm thrilled to bits that we helped some people have fun playing the game, because honestly , that's one of the best things about this I think, I know we got a few new folks into WoD, and roleplaying is just a really awesome way to have social and indepth fun with friends and make great memories.

As for questions, Billy did eventually have a familiar, technically. He was very closely haunted by a chess spirit called "Thatcher's Obsession". Andy's closest connections are with a bigass werewolf pack, and after The Agents died, Andy spent most of his time around them, and he's in a pretty baddd way most of the comic, he probably has it the worst of anyone in this comic.

Naturally the werewolves noticed pretty quickly that Billy had a decently noticeable spirit on him and offered to take care of it to keep it from causing negative effects (like, being so obsessed with chess that you barely ever make any friends and push people away, huh?)

But Billy takes this news and gets pretty mad, kind of thinking of this spirit that was made from his own passion for chess and thinks of it like a son in someways. So he takes to calling it Theo and has it as a Familiar that gives basically just chess based powers and benefits. We bent the rules a bit and instead of Theo taking the shape on an animal, he looked like a steampunkish chess clock that could move around a bit and stuff.

Amical's gun wasn't really an item from the books, but it was a fae made item that he stole and made into a soul stone, using his soul, to keep paradox away from him. I know soul stones aren't supposed to be mobile like that, but it's cool special item we made up a bunch of fun lore and abilities for etc.

As for Legacy, none of Seedlings were really going to have time to seek out that specialization, just due to where the plot went, but they did get some weirdass powers from the story later on, mostly because they were messing with some world ruining shit and ended up entangling in a bigger mess than they realized.

Only real Legacy in the comic that you'd have met is Flux who was in training as a Forge Master, she was of course struggling to get in because it's heavily frowned upon to include women in their brotherhood.
@Blubb: Thanks so much! I'm sad to let it go but I also know it's really not going to work as smoothly as I want. I might work on writing something again in the future or trying a visual novel or something but I make no promises because I'm still not up to snuff on my mental health junk to promise I can make deadlines.

Our Author's page has all our social media junk if you want to keep an eye out, but of course I'm biased to recommending my wife Alexis' other comics. I wrote a lot of dialogue and stuff in morphE but she helped make a lot of the best jokes (Billy pocket texting, Ken hitting Andy with a stick scene was basically all her etc) and character development stuff that seriously made this great. And those comics both update once a week so, you're not going to be kept waiting as long like you were on morphE updates sometimes!
Thank you, and Goodbye.
Saddening to see this project end, but no ill will for its untimely passing.

This comic was one of the reasons I got back into the WoD, though it was not for the longest time. I still remember a few high and low points along the way, and an attempt to clarify the nature of space magic in a comment. Was a fun read while it lasted, wishing you all luck with future projects.

A simple question before you depart would be if any of the seedlings were meant to gain a legacy, familiar, or imbued item of note later on. Or if anyone we already knew had a legacy at all?
Aaaw man!
Sucks that it came to a premature end, but thus is the way of life.

Thanks for the story and interesting characters, I really enjoyed reading this web..comic(?) or whatever medium it is, it was a bit different, and well done.

All the best to you guys, and hoping to see something else from you some other time!
@Cloudlight: My reply ended up higher up a bit for some reason, but scroll up to see my replies I finally typed up XD
THIS COMMENT HAS A LOT OF PLOT IN IT FOR INTERESTED PARTIES
@Cloudight: Your second one is very right on. Curio was at risk of being dead on b-day night. It was a contest mostly between Asia, Adrestia, and Curio, since Amical is most fond of Cypher and Billy. But in the end Curio staying around and hanging out with him on the weekend where he could have left, put him ahead in the running and Adrestia was the most likely target.

Amical does indeed hate death magic because it reminds him of how the paintings are done and reminds him of his past in becoming immortal originally. :D

Your third one has a lot, but here's a rough explanation; Amical made a deal with an Abyssal creature when he was 18 years old to be able to never lose his good looks, so he technically can die, but if whatever is used changes his features, ie makes him look pale, sickly, harms his skin in any way, then he will recover completely from it and look cute and pretty again.

His paintings are each an individual sacrifice, for each one the mage must die and the painting must include the blood of the victim and must reflect him watching the moment of their death. He does this yearly as part of the pact, and is by now at a stage where he ignores that aspect of himself as much as possible. He commissions artists to paint something nice over the ugly paintings of his horrified face and hangs them up all over the mansion.

When he first made the pact, he received an Abyssal spell/summoning ritual from a certain big bad of morphE, which promised to take something he cared about most in exchange for his eternal youth. At that time Amical was in the lumber business in a small town called Peshtigo, Wisconsin. A town that was basically completely wiped off the map by a giant fire, made worse because of methods of logging and tree clearing in the area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peshtigo_Fire

This was the pact taking what he cared about most. So Amical is the only one who lives through that fire, due to the pact. After that experience he is especially unsettled and upset by fire and death. This ritual was done simultaneously with several other fires around the great lakes (Chicago Fire etc) in an attempt to summon a giant Abyssal god, the imago of pain.

As for the party, The Agents were planning to attack prior to the night of the party, and yes Sam would've indeed died, she took out Rick and Malloy first though. Emily and Flux were planned to face off at the this time in a cool one on one, ultimately killing both of them, Quantum would have killed Spectacle and met his end alongside Sam at Amical's hand.

After that massive bloodbath Amical would have been super fucked up, and decided to not do his sacrifice this year, Malloy was like a son to him, who he'd taken care of since he was 19 years old and it really breaks him to lose him. He decides to make his party as happy as possible, assuming he will die by the end of the night.

The party is okay, it actually goes well, and Amical, to make it up to the Seedlings for what he put them through, offers his mansion and his Tass fountain, to anyone who will enter the spirit hallow that the Seedlings were rescued from and try to clean it out and kill the spirit inside.

Amical, a bit suicidal assuming he's going to die anyway, goes into the hallow with the rest to do what he can.He asks the Seedlings to help him go into the Hallow and try to save people. Andy, having lost all the other Agents and very bitter had snuck into the party to try to kill Amical, and follows them inside the hallow, but doesn't show himself, because he doesn't want to work with Amical. Annnddd stuff happens from there ;)

If you want to speculate more, I can tell you what else you have right.
Thats about it
@ChibiSilverWings: So that what I though of, plus some combat snippits I can share but they are based on my thoughts since I didn't know that this was based on a system, I have no information about WoD, which I assume means World of Darkness. If you want to hear more you can ask. But it might doesn't sit well with you since the way I though about things doesn't neccesary is in complaince with the system you use. (Like I would have had at least one of the character used the used nails of the boxes as weapon)
Tale 3
@ChibiSilverWings: The paintings remind me alot about Dorian Grey.
But I think only the painting that is made the last time would actual hurt him, in sense of physical.
It is likely to hang in the bedroom.
The paintings are letting him life the one year over and over but their making needs a blood/death sacrifice.
The Church of the one who seems to worship Hizrim. So they might want to take back his body if it still
exists and might attack at the party.
You said the succubus was an hidden angel, so she might help at the party, but she might not, if she is like
the higher angels in tad williams bobby dollar, if you know what I mean.
Sam is highly likly to die in the fight. Some of the team might be also die as I pointed out in Tale 1&2.
Francis might be hurt, her character seemed to been build so that Big Bill can admit his feelings open
somewhere in the storyline seeing here in pain might actual get himover some threshold.
She might become a mage too. The faction that bought all the manawater might attack at the party.
If they kill/deafeat amical their next target might be the spirit cave.
About the independant women, she is either working for the spirits or the spirit that posses her body
is very good since he even takes care of her teeth. It is also possible its a cooperation. Sorry I had to rewrite this since it appreas that the comment was lost in the net.
@OwlBear: Amical is a Silver Ladder, but is highly on the side of diplomacy with basically everyone he can be and having a frankly, huge amount of tass, it's in best interest of most mages to get along with him too. He gets along the least well with Guardians of the Veil, but he has friends in most factions.

As usual, drawing some from "canon" WoD and some from our own world setup, Chicago doesn't have a huge mage community, it's in large part vampire territory. Amical plays as many sides as possible, and even socialized a bit with fae in the past. Being that he's (mostly) immortal and more powerful than an average mage, he's got the luxury not overly loyal to any specific faction and not getting pushed around.

For Asia's backstory, I'll have shadowednavi give you a run down in a comment later :)
sad to see this end, I was looking forward to finding out what was going to happen.

Am i right in thinking that Amical and co are seers of the throne? or do they belong to some other order?

I am curios but could you tell me more about Asias Backstory?
Tale 2
Hunter might be a prime target during the painting/birthday party because his death magic seems to be the most ugly by Amican. This might be because it remindes him how the paintings are done or it might be because he could make a lot more of damage to them.
Tale 1
@ChibiSilverWings: Ok here goes nothing: Ok here are the forces at the moment Cyper is likly a weakpoint even with have seen the the killing point he is entangelt with amical by the means that this is the first place he actually feels as a place where he is home but this might be replaceable with the group feeling how likely he is to turn to each side is a pont I am not sure because he is still under the thread of the collar.
@Cloudlight: Feel free, we'd love to hear your ideas, that sounds like fun :)
