When She Was Bad

by amiko_16
For every story about a hero, there is a "bad guy". Only, this story isn't about the hero. It's about the smart-alec, tough-as-nails villain. About her fights, her triumphs, her losses, her lackeys...
And maybe her love life. If she can ever get the guts to ask the girl of her dreams out.
(contains mostly yuri/GL and a bit of background het...Beware of foul language. It's mostly rated "mature" for violence and cursing. Sort of like an extremely f-d up reverse version of a magical girl story.)
Read L->R, western style.

Luckily for Sean, Amber doesn't know exactly what Will has gone through.

Also, though am sure Max could handle a tied up Sean, it's never good to leave one of your guys alone with a prisoner.

RE: Spartanc45... Yep. It's just sometimes harder to see in grayscale.

Sean: Still can hear you guys. Also still waiting on my shoe request. If anything, could you take the one I have on off. Been bugging me the whole time.

Did Max always have heterochromia?

But yeah. Love how the first two sentences in the 6th panel are almost word for word Gail's decision to keep Will.

Think Sean's having a bit of almost deja-vu about that particular sort of conversation? I remember him being part of a similar one with Gail and Jasper when Jasper brought his hostage in.

@sun tzu: To be fair, controlling the underworld wouldn't be that villain's only goal. Usually, the plans comic book villains have are rather deadly to everyone around not on the villain's side, or have the goal of forming a dictatorship, and are often often only marginally good for the villain's 'allies'. By design. That's why the villain would be a scumbag, not because they tried to kill someone they saw as a threat that wasn't going to be neutralised any other way.

Gail's not really interested in killing anyone other than Amber. Aside from a few robberies, she doesn't really even seem too interested in crime, beyond gaining enough money and power to take care of herself and her people. Torturing Max, again, was something she allowed out of (perceived) necessity. Killing Amber seems to be partly out of revenge and partly out of practicality. Putting the bystanders in danger was a diversion playing on Amber's need to play the hero (and was done knowing Amber would save the people instead of going after Gail). She didn't even want Will kidnapped. Jasper was acting on his own, and she chewed him out royally for it and had Sean make sure Jasper *didn't* torture him like he did Max. The only reason Will's still at the flower shop is because Gail wants to know what Jasper's up to, and she hasn't laid a hand on him, or even threatened to. Again, she may not be a good person, but 'scumbag' is a tad harsh.

If I was reading a Spider-Man comic, and there was some new villain on the scene trying to take over the Mew York underworld, and he tried to kill Spidey when the web-crawler tried to stop him... I wouldn't be going "well, it's OK, I mean, he knows Spider-Man accepts the risks when he goes out there to help people". I'd be going "this guy is a scumbag and needs to go down".

I don't see why Gail should get special treatment just because she's the protagonist.

(Just to be perfectly clear: This is not a criticism of the comic. The comic's fine.)

@sun tzu Actually, Gail wasn't too enthused about torturing him, either. She permitted it as a necessity, rather than as a desire, and only because she knew he wasn't going to tell her what she wanted to know otherwise. Jasper's the one who was gung-ho to torture Max.

As to killing Amber, Amber's an enemy. Killing enemies is part of what happens when you draw battle lines on opposite sides of the law. Legalistically, yes, it's bad, but, from a moral standpoint, both parties know what they're risking and, when you play the hero, death's a risk you accept, and, again, yes, Gail's okay with killing Amber and has tried at least twice, but she's the only one so far that she's actively tried to kill. She's actively tried to avoid killing everyone else, with the sole exception of bystanders she knew Amber would rush to save (her goal being to buy time to escape, not to kill the bystanders).

@sun tzu That was a "might as well since he's already here" sort of thing. I already went over the whole bit about her being ok with killing Amber IF IT CAME DOWN TO IT.

Either way I don't have rose tinted glasses, I'd have some sort of shitty brown tinted ones if anything. Stems from how I'm perfectly fine with hurting people if it would benefit me. It generally won't so I don't.

You know for a guy borrowing the name (or something that reads close enough) of the Author of the Art of War you don't seem to remember how dark that thing generally is. Not to mention a lack of circumstantial awareness. So far this is nothing. Hell it's pretty much just benign so far.

@Xylas_Incarnum: Gail was pretty OK with torturing Max. She was trying to murder Amber.
But I'M the one with rose-tinted glasses?

@sun tzu If Gail was ok with torture Amber's brother would have been far more roughed up than he was with just a split lip, black eye and bloody nose. That's just minor roughing up. doesn't even count as torture, just physical intimidation. Also all the killing has been on Jasper's initiative, not Gail's orders. as Spartan's listed out, Amber's the only one who Gail's approved of lethal measures if it comes to that.

Check your glasses for rose lenses.
@sun tsu: Actually, Gail's only directly authorized one murder so far, and that was Amber, who has been established as an enemy. Jasper killed that one Brute on his own, with no instruction from Gail. Gail was also the one who only wanted to take Max and not any of Amber's other people, and only because she wanted to know what happened to her (and she knows just asking isn't an option), and berated Jasper for snatching Will. In fact, when they broke Jasper out of prison, she specifically instructed Sean not to kill police, even though it would have been far more efficient (and safe) to simply kill them, and took the Brutes out by siccing the cops on them, rather than setting up a situation pitting them against one of the other rival gangs. In fact, Gail seems to prefer less violent means of getting what she wants when she doesn't see the violence as necessary except where Amber herself is concerned, and it's already been pretty well established that Amber was one of the bullies she's dealt with her whole life.

I'll grant you she's not a *good* person, but 'scum' is a little much.

Sean: You know I can hear you guys, right? Also, I prefer the term thug over scumbag. Oh, can I have my shoe back?

@Xylas_Incarnum: Er, since when exactly is Gail NOT a scumbag? Because last I checked, she was pretty OK with torture, kidnapping, and murder in order to get rid of anyone who tries to stop her from ruling the local underworld.
Sean, arguably, is closer to the antivillain end of things. Gail... is kind of a terrible person.

.... Amber is really unaware about how Gail's far closer to Anti-hero than Scumbag territory isn't she? Jasper's psychotic and closer to scumbag territory than anyone else in Gail's group... and he doesn't entirely count.
