Actually, it's a historical reference. On July 31st, 1978, Hurricane Amelia hit Corpus Christie, Texas. It was a very fast-forming and fast disappating storm - it formed on July 30th, hit land on the 31st, and disappated by August 1st. Since our hero and his GF were driving back from vacation in Mexico and satellite imaging was in it's infancy back then, well, they had no way of knowing the hurricane was coming. To them, driving back into Corpus on the morning of the 31st, it would have looked like just a really bad storm. It was, however, a damned nasty storm - 33 people were killed, and an incredible amount of damage was done to the city of Corpus Christie.
