Cardboard Angel

by ryuuenx
Cardboard Angel is a web comic I created from 2008 to 2013 and posted on Strawberry Comics. It revolves around a girl named Mayuko who is called upon by a ghost named Yuuji to help him pass over into the afterlife, and is filled with drama, comedy, and an extra helping of shoujo manga bubbles! I've decided to repost CA in its entirety here for fun, and also because the original site hosting it is down.

Not only will the entire comic be posted here, I will also be adding new content--new art, potential bonus stories, things I didn't have time for during the original run--so returning readers won't just be getting the same old stuff. I hope you all enjoy Cardboard Angel: Extended Edition! Updates will be Monday through Friday!

I haven't seen a lot of long-running webcomics on unfinished-business ghost stories. But you got me hooked, and I just read 547 pages in one go. Thanks for sharing your works.

Oh, and I just noticed the archive page ( http://cangel.smackjeeves.com/archive/ ) is not showing the page list. It'd be really nice if this got fixed.

P.S. I remembered reading just another comic on Smack Jeeves based on a similar musician ghost story and his quest to bring unfinished song back to his band; but that one is a short comic.

whoops!
forgot to schedule some pages, so i'm posting 5 tonight to make up for it. regular updates will resume next week!
happy anniversary!
This week marks Cardboard Angel's anniversary. It officially debuted as a web comic on July 2nd, 2008 (although it's technically older as it was first published in Fractured Kisses in 2004). I haven't been able to do much in the way of bonus art for the repost of the comic, but just had to visit some 'old friends' and draw this up. Thanks to all who are stopping by to reread it, and discover it for the first time. I appreciate it!!
This is the cover for the magazine featured in this chapter, originally drawn in 2010. (and boy does it show! But I couldn't leave it out!)
The first Valentine's Day art I did for Cardboard Angel, from 2009. Done with Sakura Microns and Copic markers.
Happy New Year!
Starting back up with updates for CA with this, a new year's drawing way back from 2009, during the comic's first run.

This piece from 2009 was inked and then colored in Photoshop. The colors may seem a little garish now, but I liked it at the time!

Merry Christmas!
Happy holidays, everyone! Along with the regular update, I'm posting some favorite holiday drawings I did during CA's first run. This one is from its first year, 2008. Done with Sakura Microns and Copic markers, this was one of the first group shots I did. You'll notice that Tomo doesn't have his tattoos in this; he has full sleeves, but I hadn't fleshed them out yet when I drew this, so instead of potentially messing it up by drawing them in, I left his shoulders bare.

And then things get even more complicated--Hiroshi Asano is a character who was featured in bother Ganbare! Shimura-san and my first web comic, TV CIRCUIT.

Slightly breaking the 4th wall here by mentioning a character in my older webcomic, Ganbare! Shimura-san (and then Mayuko holds up a copy of it).

A drawing of Haruka wearing buttons with Yuuji's initial on them in remembrance, originally from 2009.
An 'alternate take' created for the first graphic novel.
Originally done as a joke, shortly before the release of the first graphic novel. Sort of poking fun at unintentional plot holes/inability to expand on the situation in Task 3.
Something done for the CA web site as a joke at the end of Task 2.
This was a bonus comic page for the 2nd graphic novel, created by my friend Ginny Higerd. She decided she wanted a different conclusion to the classroom scene in Task 4 (around page 10/11). You can see more of Ginny's art at http://magicalmelonball.deviantart.com

This was the cover for the first volume of the CA graphic novel, which I used to sell at conventions and online. We also used it for a printing of Task 1. It's a mirror image (sort of) of that cover.

This was created back in 2009 and was a redraw of the original cover for Cardboard Angel when it debuted in Fractured Kisses volume 4, in 2004. I redrew it when I revamped the comic and turned it into what you are all reading (and re-reading) today.
Rika Kikuchi, one of Mayuko's best friends, dreams of becoming a fashion designer. She makes most of her outfits already, and is set on opening up her own shop someday.

Unfortunately, she doesn't have that much drive when it comes to school (but then again, that may be the norm for most 15-year-olds). She can be a bit shallow and flighty, as evidenced in the comic's first run. But she's still a good girl deep down.
