The Keep on the Borderlands

by warriorneedsfood
Follow my adventurers as they travel through The Keep on the Borderlands adventure. They also go through The King's Festival adventure as a prelude. The characters in this comic are based on PCs from an old tabletop game I played in my teens, this comic is driven by characters, but the results of actions are based on dice rolls, just like a table top game. I have stats for each one of these guys, and I have the rolls determining success or failure with every action. I don't know who is going to live and who is going to die. So let's discover together what is going to happen!

And it boiled down to just a halfling and an orc, and the halfling won. I did no roll fudging, it could have gone either way. Nobody guessed the outcome.
Sarkin is kicking ass! He's the guy that starts rolling well at the last minute.
Well the two girls are down, but the dwarf is still in the game!
Finally, the Shaman Orc gets taken down!
The fight continues… we are getting close to the end.
Oh the old, look over there so I can take a swig of healing potion bit.
The fight continues and Borys is down for the count!
Not everyone who you thought was dead is actually dead. The fight continues!

This is my system for who dies. When a character reaches 0 hit points, they are immediately out of the fight. They may or may not be unconscious based on the wound that put them to zero. Every round a character goes without first aid, they loose another hit point. When they reach negative hit points equal to their Constitution, they die.

If a character reaches really low hit points, I’m depicting them as wounded, but still standing. If a character is at negative hit points, and has received some help and is not loosing any more hit points, I will have them either unconscious, or so hurt they are just lying there, like they broke a leg or something. A character can make a constitution check to stay awake long enough to perform first aid on him or herself if the wound wasn’t severe enough.

Anyway, that’s my system for kicking the shit out of the characters that you are seeing playing out in front of you.
The battle is just at the point where everyone is just about out of hit points. Why do adventurers do this to themselves?
The casualties are piling up!
The Fight begins in earnest. There are many more orcs then there are PCs, even with the the assistance of the guest party. This fight is not going to be easy for anyone.
Magic Missile

Range: 150′
Duration: 1 round
Effect: Creates 1 or more arrows

A magic missile is a glowing arrow, created and shot by magic, which inflicts 1d6 + l (2-7) points of damage to any creature it strikes. After the spell is cast, the arrow appears next to the spellcaster and hovers there (moving with him) until the spellcaster causes it to shoot. When shot, the magic missile will automatically hit any one visible target the spellcaster specifies. The magic missile actually has no solid form, and cannot be touched. A magic missile never misses its target and the target is not allowed a saving throw.
For every 5 levels of experience of the caster, two more missiles are created by the same spell. Thus a 6th level spellcaster may create three missiles.
The spellcaster may shoot the missiles all at one target or at different targets.
The two armies rush at each other with only a heartbeat playing on the soundtrack.
This is the beginning of a big fight between the riled-up Orcs and the new Adventuring party, with Sarkin and Illerya both in there. This fight was entirely rolled out and the results of the battle were unknown to me before I started it. I just figured the Orcs had enough with the intrusion and were going to kick the butts of these jerks who were invading their homes. And the ‘rescue party’ was there just in time to keep this from turning into a cannibal exploitation comic. HOWEVER, there’s going to be a high death toll with this battle, so try to guess who is going to make it!
So the classic DM save is in play. We have only just seen them all now, and there’s a big fight coming. Who do you think will survive? If you guess correctly, I’ll draw any original character you want into the comic.
I mean if you saw a grubby half naked woman running out of an orc cave, what would you think?
So it looked like the party wasn’t getting anywhere at all. So I played a classic Dungeon Master card, A Second Adventuring Party! (TM)

These guys are on the same quest as the party and we will see just how these guys help or hinder our characters.

If you can’t beat ’em, run the hell away!

How can you expect to get into a fight in a dungeon and not have people hear the commotion all over the place?
I was trying a more Black and White style with this page. Not sure it was a successful experiment.
