The Keep on the Borderlands

by warriorneedsfood
Follow my adventurers as they travel through The Keep on the Borderlands adventure. They also go through The King's Festival adventure as a prelude. The characters in this comic are based on PCs from an old tabletop game I played in my teens, this comic is driven by characters, but the results of actions are based on dice rolls, just like a table top game. I have stats for each one of these guys, and I have the rolls determining success or failure with every action. I don't know who is going to live and who is going to die. So let's discover together what is going to happen!

This was where I started to feel like I was getting the hang of photoshop.
Drawing the fight scenes are difficult. I roll out the whole fight, but I don't want to draw each roll, and I try to tell the story of how the fight went down. But the fight doesn't follow a story, it's just random and dangerous. In this case it was my first drawn out fight and I drew almost every dice roll. Later on, I get better at drawing the fights with more of a narrative.
I broke my hand and was unable to draw for a month when I originally drew this. I ran the uploaded queue down to almost nothing. I was still wearing the cast when I was drawing this. This picture was drawn and finished on paper and was only scanned in and touched up in Photoshop.
This is another page that was penciled in 2008 and finished 4 years later. Some panels are much newer than others.
This sequence was penciled back in 2008. Some panels were inked in 2009, and I followed up and finished the page in 2014. Redrew a couple panels that were still just pencil. Can you guess which is which?
This page has panels that were redrawn, which makes some panels 2 years older then others. I think it is one of the cool things about this process. You can see what I'm doing spread out over years on a single page
The Sleep spell is the great equalizer.
This page is a mess. Here I was starting to play with Photoshop brushes. Still working on improving my style.
This is one of the first pages where I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of the characters. I'm starting to see the beginnings of my own style. I lapse with bad art, but a boring as this page is, I really like the character of how I drew it.
I'm drawing Illerya as 'the hot one'. It's part of how my games always played out.
Illerya is freaking out. I think it's threatening for her to have another cleric in jeopardy.
Always running in to help; that's Illerya's M.O.
The Party is on the road again. Random encounter table really can mess up someone's day.
Sometimes when you can't bring yourself to kill off the party because a succession of bad rolls, so you just have the victors pile them up and sell them off.
A little more digital work this time. I'm still fluctuating on each page with how I'm producing it.
Sarkin finally realized that he got robbed. This page was penciled 2 years before I inked it. It was inked 6 months before I scanned it in and touched it up in Photoshop.
This was where I started to feel like I was gaining an understanding of what I was doing.
So the characters have arrived in town... and they're off to a great start.
I always thought random encounters were too arbitrary.
I really made that torch look like it's as bright as a lighthouse. I'm still trying to figure out night scenes here.

I edited this page to correct the lines of the panels, and to edit out the swearing as to not offend anyone. I also redrew a panel that always bothered me. The uncensored version is on my pateron page.
