That's it for chapter 2! I'll be uploading big batches of pages off and on over the next few days.

Getting kinda tired now so I'll just shut up for a bit and let the next few pages speak for themselves

Chapter 2 marks the beginning of Blackwidow Apocalypse's first major arc. Having been introduced to Izzy in the last chapter, this next one focuses on exactly what makes her tick - and where she got those weird scars on her eye...

And with the appearance of a mysterious new character (who has giant sludge hands and eats referees, apparently) the first chapter of Blackwidow Apocalypse concludes! If you've read this far, thank you for following along with me on this retrospective commentary. I hope what you saw here his piqued your interest enough to come back - chapter 2 is where stuff really starts to get interesting.

And so, Izzy's first battle concludes with her bisecting a giant cyborg with a blunt object as FIRE THREATENS TO CONSUME THE ENTIRE CITY HOLY SHIT

The idea of cutting with a blunt object has always seemed extremely cool (and underutilized in fiction) to me. Like, you're not actually cutting - you're just tearing the guy in half! It's way more brutal!

So I mentioned before that BWA got retooled a bit after this chapter, and... well, a lot of Maxx Damage's dialogue here implies that he's suddenly recognizing Izzy from somewhere - but she doesn't recognize him!

This is actually referencing a plot point from an earlier draft of the story that I decided not to incorporate into its final form. So what he's saying here doesn't really make a lot of sense. I think it can still work though - he's just in denial that Izzy has beaten him! It's fine! It's super fine!

Wish I could remember how I did those wobbly panel borders. Was that with a brush? I think it was. I should use brushes more often.

BWA's first chapter was drawn almost entirely with Rapidograph pens (and a sharpie), but somewhere between chapters 1 and 2 I realized that Rapidographs are expensive and fussy to maintain, so I switched to Microns and never looked back.

This is one I don't have a lot to say about! She's slashin'. Look at her go.

"Now what the hell just happened here...?"

Okay so bear with me a second.

The idea is, Izzy's smashing through the borders of the panel to reach into the offpanel space, which in this comic is sort of a "backstage" that's comprised largely of industrial piping. It's really just a convoluted-ass excuse to justify her use of Hammerspace to store weapons when she's not using them.

Of course, in this case, she's just ripping out a piece of Hammerspace itself to use as a weapon!

His wrecking ball arm beeps when it launches and boops when it retracts. Where'd all that fire come from so quickly...?

Hey, this one's not bad, I think! Panel 1 still strikes me as looking pretty cool, and panel 3 is pretty close to how my style looks today! Granted, it's pretty much just an eye and some speed lines, but still! Improvements!

Somehow the idea that Izzy's first opponent should be a dude with a launchable wrecking ball arm just seemed... fitting.

Y'know, when I look back on these old pages, Maxx Damage doesn't seem like that bad of a guy really. When Iz picks a fight with him, he doesn't immediately attack - he just tells her not to get involved. And heck, once Gottoli passed out on the last page, he let the ref know, as if to ask if he can't just stop their fight there without killing her.

I guess this antihero was a decent guy all along...?

You get a better look at Maxx Damage on this one. See how his feet are covered?! 'Cuz... 'cuz 90's antiheroes always have their feet covered?! Get it? GET IT?!

His speech bubbles to look kind of grungy, to give the effect of a gravelly voice, but I think I may have gone a bit overboard here.

And, right on cue, here is the villain of this chapter, MAXX DAMAGE!

Even though he's just a starter villain, I still tried to put a lot of effort into making him look distinctive and memorable. He's inspired by 90's comic book antiheroes like Spawn and Bloodshot and (yes) The Maxx. It probably doesn't come off super well (as I didn't really know how to draw huge muscles back then) but even to this day I have a soft spot for him - I especially like the torn-off trenchcoat sleeve.

Of course, for this girl to have fallen out of the sky, something had to have launched her up there...

Hey, it's the girl from page 1! Her face looks a bit different here - I decided to make her features look sharper and more angular to reflect certain personality traits of hers. It's kind of fun seeing how these characters changed - the streak in Izzy's hair was so much shorter back then!

2010 Me still hasn't quite worked out hands yet, though. We'll get better.

This is another one that bugged me after I finished it - and unlike the last page, it still does. The idea is, Izzy spotted something falling from the sky on the last page, and then WHAM, it lands right on the car in this page. I struggled a lot to convey a strong sense of impact in that first panel, and I still think it feels like I could have done more. Maybe if I'd used a more dynamic camera angle...

Anyway, the mysterious thing that fell from the sky turned out to be a person! Who could it be...?

You know, I remember HATING this page when I first drew it. I was convinced that it was by far the worst looking one in the whole chapter. Looking back on it now, though... I mean, it still bugs me, because all my old art bugs me, but it doesn't seem especially worse than any of the other pages. If anything I think it's one of the better ones - it's got a fairly complex background and a couple of visual gags that I still kinda like.

Isn't that always the case with art? You struggle with a thing and you end up hating it... but then you come back to it later like "Eh, it's not so bad"

I was planning to do a thing where the name of Zack's band changes every single time it's mentioned! It would be a hilarious and endearing running joke if they ever showed up in this comic again.

Maybe they will, someday.

BWA started out kind of Scott Pilgrim-inspired, and I think the first chapter is pretty obvious about it. (It might get more noticeable as we go!) By chapter 2, though, I think most of the similarities are pretty much gone.

It's important to note that, between chapters 1 and 2, I took a huge break (like, five years) and retooled the story significantly. That means the tone is a bit different between chapters - I think a little more surreal. It also means that, once we get to chapter 2, the art quality JUMPS!

The demon girl hanging off Zack here is actually a reused character design from the very first comic I ever drew, Conquistador! It still exists on some deep, dark corner of my DeviantArt page. Her name's Charlotte Charlotte.
