Here it comes again, a new chapter. I felt like introducing a few design changes, but ultimately I decided not to tweak anything major mid-story. So the only thing I changed is the font size (it's slightly bigger now).

Let's take one Wednesday off to contemplate and allow The Frolic to return on October 16 with chapter 4 of Home: "Ghosts of Ravenstein".

I hope it’s not offending anyone that I’m presenting a female character (Remy) as a dum-dum. After all, this story includes dumb girls, dumb guys, smart girls, smart guys… a rich spectrum of gender/idiocy combinations.

Turns out I am able to complete pretty much an entire page within a day... but I need to be honest and admit that in order to save time I used a lot of reference material to remind myself how a liquor store looks like. And I type this while sipping a beer.

Big eyes as well as small nose and lips in panel 6 made me wonder if my style wandered into some weird, cartoonish, even manga-esque alley. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with it, but I didn't exactly stop it either...

For the first time in aeons I have managed to finish a page before a self-imposed deadline. I would like to believe that this is me finally getting into the groove and finally feeling comfortable with a certain quality and speed etc... But it's probably just the case of too much free time.

Oof. Back from holidays. If all goes well, starting from next week I'll be back to the normal schedule of posting one page each Wednesday night, as we slowly approach the end of chapter 3.

A bit of a heads-up here:
I went to Italy yesterday and will be staying here for almost two weeks. Normally that would mean two 'empty' weeks regarding new pages. As I was trying to avoid this, I nearly completed e03p18, just to make this one empty week instead, but due to time restraints I failed (I was literally falling asleep at the tablet around three hours before heading off to the airport). I didn't want to post a half-assed page today, so I'll finish it and post probably next Friday and then we'll be back to the normal Wednesday-ish schedule.

The setting of this page is the same as in #1, page 08 ( http://thefrolic.smackjeeves.com/comics/2662779/e01p08/ ), back when I was really insecure about my coloring. I wanted to use the same palette as then, so I relied heavily on the eyedropper tool. What caught my attention was how murky and grey this old page was, and therefore how murky and grey this one turned out to be, compared to other pages from chapter 3. The reason back then was that I did not have the balls to use strong colors as I did not want the art to end up looking too cartoonish. But the greyish tone had its appeal and I even remember one reader complimenting me for using a "restrained color palette". I liked that. But these days I feel more ready to use aggresive colors and I do end up using them. Unfortunately, because of that, the restrained color palette seems to be gone...

Okay, so this page is slightly experimental. Let's be blunt here - 90% of the drawings is the copy-paste gimmick. Perhaps I have said in the past that I am not the biggest fan of using it. It could be a result of laziness or maybe of lack of interest in trying to show a new emotion or expression. It's sad how you happen to stumble across a drawing you have already seen a couple of pages ago or even in a different issue. Supposedly the artist was in a hurry to meet a deadline. However, I would LIKE to believe that sometimes this technique is justifiable. What if a page is a piece of its own kind, specifically designed as a collection of still images, all identical or almost identical? Is it better to struggle to draw the same image and fail or maybe go with the easy mode? Ugh, morality...

Just a quick note that the next week's page can and probably will be delayed. Turns out, if you work at a university, the end of a semester can be quite busy. Who would have thought?
