The Power of Stardust

The Power of Stardust

by Otto Gruenwald
Mere decades after the end of the Great War in the Air the world finds itself in the midst of a second Great War--a war in which gods and men-like gods shake the very foundations of reality with their combat.

The rise of superhumanity and supertechnology has expanded Earth's war to the far corners of reality. There is no end in sight to the conflict. With each new miracle comes several new nightmares. The fires of war grow and threaten to consume all existence.

After a battle in Europe against an Axis energy dragon, a superhuman named Spectro tumbles through uncharted reality--and something follows him back home to Earth, something with strange thoughts and incredible power.

This is the tipping point. This is point of no return.

The Earth is in the Power of Stardust, and there is no turning back.

Germany and the Vril-Ya
The alliance between Hitler's Germany and the Vril-Ya was one of necessity. When German explorers discovered the Vril-Ya's subterranean nation they found the power source from which the Vril-Ya took their name responded more readily to their mental commands. While the Germans took this as a sign that an ancient "Aryan" race were the true builders of the Vril-Ya nation and the Vril-Ya nothing but a slave race inheriting what their masters built, it was because humanity was a young race with a fresh noosphere which Vril found easier to work with. Vril destroys all barriers and removes all obstacles, but a flood travels faster over flat terrain compared to one with obstructions.

If raw power was all there was to Vril manipulation, it is likely that Germany would have subjugated the Vril-Ya. They had no love for a matriarchal nation that regarded humanity as apes with ego. But the Germans required training and that meant willing Vril-Ya teachers.

The Vril-Ya were careful not to reveal all their secrets to the Germans least they lose their usefulness to the Axis cause. Though secret teachings gradually leaked to German Vril academies through a small, heretical German/Vril-Ya alliance that believed miscegenation between the two would create the true master race, at no time during the war did Germany's Vril masters know all the secrets of the Vril-Ya.

Many historians have wondered if the outcome of the war could have changed if the Vril-Ya had been more forthcoming.

The Nazis may have ultimately been defeated by their inability to fully gain the trust of a race as convinced of their superiority as they were of their own.

The Cutie from the Black Lagoon!
Pearl "Percy" Adams, aka Fishergirl, is going this year as Julie Adams' character from The Creature of the Black Lagoon complete with a Gillman puppet animated by Percy's telekinesis.

Percy's always loved the retro, be it superhero legacies like the Fishermen or classic horror films like Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Some Thule dislike Creature because they see the Gillman as a monstrous parody of their race, but not Percy. As a human/Thule hybrid, she's always felt torn between two heritages and identified with the misfit and lonely human/fish hybrid Gillman. Creature from the Black Lagoon became one of her favorite movies and Gillman one of her favorite movie characters.

The Ray
The Ray, who will be appearing in issue 2 of The Power of Stardust.

pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Ray

Some characters in The Power of Stardust haven't changed much from their original incarnations--the Marvels, for instance. Some have though (like the Black Terror who is now an entire army and Tabu who is based on the Nigerian Zangbeto).

Our version of the Ray is very different.

When scientist Ray Terrill encounters a photon anomaly high in the thermosphere, only the anomaly survives the encounter. Torn between memories of a dead man and a future of possibilities, the anomaly is adopted by the crew of the Ivan Sanderson thermosphere observation station named after en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_T._Sanderson

The anomaly adopts the name Roger after Roger Bacon and helps Sanderson base research the naturally occurring aerofauna of the thermosphere which are normally out of sync with the visible spectrum until Roger brings them into it. He's pictured with an example of aerofauna--or rather part of it brought into visibility by his light.

Roger is something of a shepherd for the aerofauna around Sanderson base and even keeps a few as pets.
Constellation Mappers
The Constellation Mappers are one of the oldest religious orders in the universe. Formed from all the sapient races of the cosmos (Including Lorians, as seen a couple of pages ago), they believe that the underlying reality of the universe consists of stories--particularly the stories given to the stars.

The Constellation Mappers travel the universe mapping the constellations and their associated stories--spreading and sharing technology and culture as they do so.

Most Lorians "ignite" when instinct drives them to travel the cosmos and find a lifeless world to die upon and seed with their ashes. But some resist this instinct and maintain their natural immortality. These immortals are some of the most respected Mappers as they are old enough to see old stars die and new stars birthed.

100 Subs on Tapas and the start of a new webnovel!
Over at The Power of Stardust's other home, we've hit 100 subscribers!

I wonder how long it'll take to reach that over here?

In other news, I've started a webnovel about a pulp superhero named the Trespasser in the vein of The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger. It's purpose is to not only provide a good story, but to help keep me disciplined as a writer. I'm going to try to keep up a weekly schedule with it.

Oh course, this doesn't mean I'm never going to finish those secret files! I haven't forgotten about them!
We're Back!
We're back!

I also did some lore files this week on tapas (with mutants and masterminds character sheets, if anyone is into that). They were shorter than the Axis/Fantomah/Fishermen Legacy files still developing, so I got them finished fast!

The Immortal, 1930's bank robber turned electric phantom:https://tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-The-Immortal

The Needle, a doctor by day, fearsome avenger by night:https://tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-The-Needle-

The Dove, a gentleman killer: https://tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-The-Dove-
https://tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-The-Fishermen

It's another lore file tie in today (Nyamo is steadily but surely recovering!)

The Fishermen are one of America's oldest superhero legacies and have recently accepted a FisherGIRL into their ranks.

Pearl "Percy" Adams follows her half-human half-thule brothers into service. Though many try and make something political about her being the first woman on the Fishermen, she has a great respect for the men of her family who have inspired her and the women who choose to use their powers in non-combat roles and wishes to be seen as just another continuation of a century-old tradition.
Mystery Woman of the Jungle!
Our artist Nyamo is shifting back into gear and the next page is getting close to done. Have a sketch of Fantomah, Mystery Woman of the Jungle in the meantime--and a new lore file over at:

https://tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-Fantomah
A new lore file in progress!
This week we have another lore file tie-in pic depicting a child of Futuro, one of the Axis counter-superhumans used throughout the war.

tapas.io/series/Capeworld-Secret-Files-The-Individual-Axis-Nations-and-Their-Co unter-Superhumans

The children of Futuro were once humans, the flower of Italian youth, but they were offered up to the self-proclaimed god of tomorrow and transformed into beings of shattered light and screeching sound by his touch. Their human guises were created to make them less disconcerting for the Italian officers that commanded them, though as this picture shows the guises were often imperfect.
The Comment!
Our artist has been sick lately which is why new pages have been so slow, but enjoy this drawing of a Black Terror soldier and new lore file fleshing out the history of the world of The Power of Stardust at:

What if?
When Gar of the Starfield universe threatens to kick the world off a table it's up to newspaper's finest to stop him! But when Mandrake the Magician goes off the deep end trying to stop him can Slylock Fox and Prince Valiant prevent Mandrake from becoming an even worse threat than Gar-Field?

What if The Power of Stardust substituted newspaper comic strip characters for public domain characters?
