According to the twitter survey, most of you prefer a longer & irregular schedule but bigger update over small & consistent ones. This also works out better for me, so starting next update I will be uploading half a chapter at a time, whenever I finish. Meanwhile, I will still be posting wips and doodles to the WotS Twitter (https://twitter.com/yainmh) and Tumblr (https://whispers-of-the-swallow.tumblr.com/). Thank you for reading this far and see you soon!

It's kinda hard to keep it up weekly (and also too slow paced imo) so I think I'm going to combine updates into an every-other-week schedule... so next update is Saturday 2/9!

(I'll eventually post all extra comics and drawings here at the end of each chapter)

@WindowMaker: Thank you for noticing that! Apologies for a long answer because this will probably make sense only if we share the same background...

I modeled their environment after Taiwan - or I should say part of, because it has a long, complicated history of colonization by the Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese and Han Chinese - with the political context taken out. At home my family speaks a mix of Mandarin, Hokkien ("A-") and Japanese ("sensei", "-san"), using whatever vocab that is most accurate. This is common in Taiwan, especially for families who have elders raised in the Japanese days. Nicknames with the structure "A-" + <Mandarin/Hokkien name> + <Japanese honourifics> are not uncommon.

The word I actually wanted to use, though, was 老師 (teacher), but I didn't want to transliterate it since it's not a familiar word for English speakers, nor translate it to "teacher" because it doesn't include the meaning of doctor/master in English like it does in Mandarin, which would make it a weird way to call a herb shop owner. "Master" is not really suitable for someone his age either imo. So sensei it is... I'll come back to edit it if I find a better word.

(I've been trying to stick to Mandarin and Hokkien otherwise; originally Haku was supposed to refer to Huang with -san.)

Since it's mostly a translation issue, in additional to that I want to take the real life politics out, I'm probably not going to explain it in the story/context of their world. Their world is not ours so I can't really say which language(s) they're speaking, and it won't matter if they're speaking 1 or 3 anyway (plot-wise), so please interpret it as you like.

p.s. The buildings in their city are also a mix of Minnan, Japanese and Dutch styles (although much hasn't been shown yet lol), just like how it is in Taiwan. The appearance of the street where Haku's shop is located is based on an old street in Penghu.

I felt some dissonance when hearing "ah-" and "-sensei" in sentences next to each other...

- Aren't "ah-" part being Chinese, while "-sensei" being Japanese?
- Which language granny was speaking in-story?
- Or she just switched language when she talked to Huang?
- In the city that Haku's apothecary resides in, which language(s) is(/are) commonly used in conversation?

@WindowMaker:
Ahh sorry I kinda assumed most readers came from my tumblr and have seen them before > <

They're some of the ocs I've doodled over the years! WotS exists solely to build a world for them, so in other words they'll all show up at some point (one of them later this chapter!) But for now, no one besides Huang and Haku have made an appearance in the comic yet, but I do post drawings of them to the WotS tumblr/twitter (links on top right of the desktop site or mobile homepage) if you're interested :)

1. Are they all the cast of Whispers of the Swallow?
2. If not, which of them aren't?
3. Which ones in this picture are going to be introduced on the next chapter?

The only ones introduced so far seemed to be just Huang the Mercenary, and Haku the Healer (redhead and whitehead on the N/E side of the table), or did I miss any cameo?

Heyy I hope everyone had a great holiday!
A heads up that this chapter is going to have smaller updates (= less pages per week) and possible breaks because of the amount of background and animals I have to draw (also job search irl o<-<

> Your wish has been granted.

Happy holidays to you too. Now Huang is either embarrassed that his buddy actually went with his spontaneous comment; or he really likes what he see and struggle to keep his cool.

A short extra about where Haku got his earring :)

I'll be taking a small break of a week or two before I start the next chapter. Thank you for reading this far and happy holidays in advance!

Er... Why there are mushrooms popping on Dr. Haku's head? Is it a metaphor, or it is really his power manifesting when he got annoyed?

This is a great start~!
Congrats to starting your comic! Your art is gorgeous, the panels are great and easy to follow. I also love the dynamic between Huang and Haku already! I'm looking forward to seeing more. Cx
