Emmie’s world might sound familiar. It’s a place where hopes and dreams constantly collide with the ups and downs of daily life, from job interviews (scary!!) to routine chores like groceries and laundry. Except Emmie is a robot - a sheep-loving android who is bad at math and worried about nonexistence. Even the ordinary is an adventure!

Happy Family Day
It's Family Day over here, and I've been spending a lot of time with my parents and my grandfather. I feel incredibly blessed to have all of them in my life, and also immensely grateful that I have the luxury of being able to feel that way. Wishing you and your family, whether they are related by blood or not, all the best. <3
Last Thursday
If you follow me on instagram, you may already have read a version of what I'm about to say here. But I just wanted to take a moment to relate something that happened last Thursday.

Late in the evening I was lying in bed, surfing aimlessly on my tablet and feeling sorry for myself about some stupid thing when I suddenly had the urge to look up Mary Oliver’s poetry.* And that’s when I learned she had died that very day.

Mary Oliver's writing has such an effortlessly lyrical and warm quality to me, and when I read them I often feel, “That’s true.” or “I wish that to be true.” Her poetry helped shape my philosophy when I was younger, including the philosophy behind Now Recharging. I love so many of her poems and couldn’t possibly pick just one. But if you might be curious about her work, might I suggest three places to start.

One that always inspires me: When Death Comes

One that always comforts me: Sleeping in the Forest

One that always seems to make me feel better for some reason when I’m in particularly bad blahs: A Bitterness

Poems are linked, but if they break, just google. Or if you can find one of her poetry collections (library, bookstore etc.) you'll discover even more treasures. New and Selected Poems, Volume One includes all of the above pieces.
Happy New Year!
Hope you all have a safe and lovely New Year's Eve, and may 2019 be one full of productivity and fulfillment!
@Fiammata: lol omg! Fortunately I think Ranran is too soft to effectively kill anything like a drone... it's just pebbles ^^

Did he just... kill bee #2?
Happy holidays
Wishing you all a safe and merry Christmas/holiday!

Ever since that incident, I periodically count the number of fingers and toes on the people I draw.
What is palliative care?
See the Resources page on this site for more info, including a printing version of this comic you can use as a handout! (Or a colouring book if you want)

I’m not a medical professional, just someone who believes palliative care is a very important topic that affects everyone.

People are often afraid of the word “palliative” because it’s heavily associated with terminal illnesses, and by extension not only with death but also with failure or defeat - that accepting palliative care means accepting “the illness has won”. I think it’s really important to raise awareness, to change that perspective, and to increase support and services in this area. Palliative care is a kind of care and a philosophy that can make a huge difference to a lot of people.

I’d also like to take the opportunity to give a shoutout to the amazing Philip Aziz Centre and Emily’s House. They’re a Toronto-based palliative care organization with the city’s first - and so far, only - children’s hospice, and a simply incredible team of dedicated staff and volunteers. They are some of the loveliest people I have ever had the honour of getting to know. I would also never have had the confidence to draw this comic if it weren’t for them (thank you Amanda Maragos!!).

If you ever have the chance to learn more about palliative care, to participate in a course or a workshop on it, or to volunteer in this field, it’s an opportunity very much worth taking. The perspective and tools you gain are both humbling and truly enrich your sense of life and living.

And if it’s an option for you, please consider donating to support a palliative care organization. It’s honestly mind-blowing how much they do with what they have. If the palliative care philosophy and approach could become more well-known and available to everyone who needs it, that would be such a wonderful thing!

Let's bake!
The date on the drawing says Jan 2018 because that’s when I drew the picture but I didn’t get around to painting it until Feb 2018. Just in time for me taking advantage of buy 2 whatever deals with my friends - er, Valentine’s Day!

At last
This is the final actual comic page being migrated from Tumblr. Phew!! Migrating and organizing 300+ pages with alt tags would've been a lot harder if it weren't for SmackJeeves' beta multipage uploader. Thank goodness for that.

Thank you to everyone who’s following this little passion project!

I’ve been thinking for a while about when and where best to do this, and even whether or not to do it at all and break the wall of the comic. To be honest, I still don’t have a good answer. But the end of Chapter 3.1 seems as good a time as any to pause and reflect.

Now Recharging isn’t intended to be a sombre story. Far from it! But one of the reasons I started writing it in the first place was to help me deal with my own fears about life - about existence and mortality. And, to learn. There’s so much we don’t know or understand about living and dying. I’m sure I’ve made mistakes and will continue to do so throughout this comic, and throughout the course of my life in general, but I’m committed to learn through the process.

As difficult as writing is, it’s relatively “easy” to talk about death in a fictional setting. In real life, it’s a billion times harder. It’s scary to really talk about death, to really think about death. Most of us don’t want to do it, for lots of very understandable reasons. But it’s not something unnatural or rare. It’s something we’re all going to do. If we can learn together, it can be less lonely and scary.

A few places to start, for anyone who may need it:

Death cafes - places around the world where “people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death […] in an accessible, respectful and confidential space”: http://deathcafe.com/what/
Talking about death and dying: https://www.dyingmatters.org/page/TalkingAboutDeathDying
How to say good-bye when someone you love is dying: https://www.caring.com/articles/how-to-say-goodbye
This is the 200th page!
:O Couldn’t have imagined I could do 100 pages when I originally started this, much less 200. Yay!!
"WOW! LOOK AT ME! I CAN SPEAK GERMAN!!!”
