Nuzlocke S3

Nuzlocke S3

by Yuriakashu
Nuzlocke S^3 a pokemon hard mode comic where the protagonist, Yule, cannot catch pokemon; he can only be gifted them. With this ruleset, there are roughly seven pokemon available. The usual second rule still applies: if a pokemon faints, it is dead.

[The comic started in 2012 exclusively on dA; I am currently rectifying that and posting a page here every day until we catch up! I will also be typesetting all dialogue, etc. for easier reading.]

The flashback panel's from p. 234 - 235.

Cl ick here for the original update posted on deviantArt! O o f, lots of smears here. I remember cleaning up this page before, and still, there was a lot.

The Flaffy has temporarily joined the party!!

Cl ick here for the original version of this page on dA! Keeping to 100 spacing for dialogue and 120 spacing for radio. It makes the two slightly different from each other-- and, honestly, I just really liked the original typesetting on p. 339 too much to change it.

Muppet!Flaffy wants to help! And, capturing pokemon?? in a nuzlocke???

Click here for the original update on dA! FINALLY, CSP FILES. And ahhhhhhh uniform text sizes. Yes.

Meet the Flaffy! Literally my first encounter on the route before Lake of Rage, and they did not go down without a fight. Even on the first route, I OHKO'd most first encounters, so this was the first time I was really saddened by not being able to capture any pokemon. So, Flaffy had to make an appearance.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! I treated this like any other edit and erased all the words before (re)typing up the dialogue. It looks so much neater now. Keeping to the same two or three font sizes, even just chapter to chapter, helps a lot.

Also: with how long the comic had been going, I wanted to give people a nice place in the middle of the comic to jump to, hence the refresher on the nuzlocke rules this chapter.

Oh, hey, a Welcome to Night Vale reference.

Cl ick here for the original version on dA! Interesting new normal from here-on: already-there typesetting. I'm keeping the original here because it looks good as-is, but in the future, I will be changing most of the typing just because of the spacing in-between lines (120 is CSP's default, 100 just reads better) and because, hey, still not saving those files as editable layers, meaning that any smudges I see underneath text are unreachable without deleting the entire bubble's words. Why I did this, I don't know. 2017 me was getting ready for/ entering grad school. Pity 2017 me.

And so, welcome to Arc 3-- or, as I like to put it, the Save Silver arc.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! Some smears to edit still (and some that I could not due to how the original layers were arranged), but thanks to some tips given in dA comments, I put a piece of paper underneath my hand when drawing, which immediately made a difference. So, fewer extreme smears from here-on.

Silver has been in the crowd of every single gym battle up until this one.

Edit-wise, OOF, welcome to the worst page. Cl ick here to see the original I was working with; I'll wait. I started with cranking up both the brightness and contrast of the piece and then-- as I knew I would have to-- went panel-by-panel and edited out every smear I could. This, before even Eclipse's big gym moment, was the page I was both most regretting to edit and most looking forward to. Because now? This page is fixed. It's all downhill from here.

Just isn't ready.

Cl ick here for the original version of this comic on dA! Interesting edit with Yule's scream (put it over Yule instead of having it cut off behind him or squish it), but other than that, more smear edits. So many smear edits ...

Add this to the list of things I meant to introduce really early on but never got around to because I didn't start scripting until surfing: 1) the game reset at Azelea Gym, 2) nuzlocker perks.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! Loooots of clean-up, especially with Yule. White pen at 50% opacity works really well.

Look at my sons!! Yule's new design took a while to get used to. Eclipse is getting all the attention he deserves now that I could finally keep the spotlight on him. One mon left, after all.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! Some clean-up and typesetting here, basically delaying all of the edits a future page promises.

Oh, hi, Yule. Nice 'do.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA--! Gameplay-wise, Olivine Gym was easy, even without Fire Fang. Editing-wise, this page didn't have a CSP file?? even though i know that there was editing done with this page before now. Oh, well; just the usual edits here.

We return with a rainy scene.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! Ah!! Finally, CSP files for comic pages. 2017 was the year I got super serious about S3 (maybe too seriously) and experimented a lot with digital effects. For instance, on this page, I found a rain brush for the droplets. These pages are already mostly cleaned-up, too, meaning just some touch-ups and the usual type-setting here.

A slightly more glitchy void. I used nothing but the shading on the previous page to fill this one up.

No way back but the water.

Cl ick here for the original version of this page. Unique edit here: the last panel originally had, in white type, when the next arc would start (January 15th, 2017, beginning the best year of S3 bar none). Obviously, this date is now wrong, especially with daily updates-- but, I didn't save a layered file, just the .jpg. So, I had to take some shading from the night sky Silver stares out into and cover it up. I then typed up and replaced the original next with a >CONTINUE.

Fair warning: tomorrow's update will be another page of darkness-- and then, Arc 3. Get hyped.

Fun fact, deceased pokemon can learn HMs.

Hey! This page didn't originally exist, but just like with the background in Ifrit's death, it is something I had wanted to do. A break. A pause. A moment to realize just how much happened in the last two saves.

Still one left.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA. This was the page I was dreading to edit. It scanned horribly for no reason, and there were smears everywhere. Eclipse deserves the best, though. I adjusted the levels to give myself less work and then worked through erasing smudges, etc., from every single panel. It took a while but not as long as I thought it would, and I'm really happy with the result.

One left.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA. Tried to adjust the levels with this page. I think it worked--?
