Nuzlocke S3

Nuzlocke S3

by Yuriakashu
Nuzlocke S^3 a pokemon hard mode comic where the protagonist, Yule, cannot catch pokemon; he can only be gifted them. With this ruleset, there are roughly seven pokemon available. The usual second rule still applies: if a pokemon faints, it is dead.

[The comic started in 2012 exclusively on dA; I am currently rectifying that and posting a page here every day until we catch up! I will also be typesetting all dialogue, etc. for easier reading.]

Kurt and Silver make the *best* role-models ...

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! "Mnph" is technically a sound effect, but I typed it out here so that the next page would make a little more sense.
Yule laughs, and the world gets a bit brighter.

Wishes and swears.

Cl ick here for the original version of the page--!! So much dialogue! The page was so dark, so I ended up just increasing the brightness. That made clean-up a lot easier, but it did make the entire page more white and, well, "brighter." Maybe there's a more subtle brightness I could use in later pages ... Also fixed "Wierdo."
Thaaat was a rough gym battle. Not rough as in "everyone almost died"; rough as in "turn 18" and the sitrus berry slap in the face is not an exaggeration. As always, I try to be as accurate and honest with battles. The simultaneous double KO is simply representing Equinox's two-turns-in-a-row KOs.

Click here for the original update on dA! A new edit here: to avoid doing the white outline around text (please, stars, no), I decided to duplicate the text for Yule's thoughts to make it look darker/ pop out more. I erased the shading behind the lettering so that the entire section wouldn't be darker. I think it worked well!! Nice to have different strategies for editing the same problem.
I hate having to explain things in the artist comments. I hate it, I've worked hard since this page to never have to do that again-- but, for this page: the Item Visibility Clause. Trainers have to be allowed to see their items to pick them out. There was a huge controversy about trainers using one-time-use items accidentally, evolving their Eevees with the wrong stones, and so on, so trainers are allowed a brief period of light (five seconds) to pick the right items. Of course, that makes it hard on the eyes, which is why Kurt is clinging onto his tech roots and Silver's just keeping his eyes shut. And yeah, no Awakenings for the gym specifically designed around Hypnosis. They'd just be put back to sleep the next turn.

Anyway. Cl ick here for the original page on dA--!
Jumping straight into that battle.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! I had to make a choice whether or not to white-outline every "click" soundeffect ... I chose what would let me survive. Below are the stats for the party this gym:

Ifrit, lv. 28
Attack/ Defense 44/38
Special Attack/ Defense 58/43
Speed 55
Quick Attack | Flame Wheel | SmokeScreen | Ember
Item: Charcoal

Equinox, lv. 27
Attack/ Defense 28/54
Special Attack/ Defense 57/68
Speed 31
Sweet Kiss | Yawn | Extrasensory | Metronome
Item: Shell Bell

Eclipse, lv. 27
Attack/ Defense 89/39
Special Attack/ Defense 65/69
Speed 47
Quick Attack | Tail Whip | Dig | Ember
Item: Quick Claw
Aaaand, that's 200 pages double-page-wise! Nice!!

Cl ick here for the original page on deviantArt! I edited around the "Pfft" to make it more legible against the other lines.

Next chapter: gym battle~
Oh hey, 100 edited pages!! Nice.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! Equinox is saying the exact moves I used against Silver's starter. Note the Metranome; I was starting to get a bit cocky about having "no" deaths ...
Breaking news: Silver's a bit of a jerk.

Cl ick here for the original version on dA! Scan's a little messy here ... I'm tempted to just edit all of the shadows and smears away (and I can do it, I've done it before), but that's not what these edits are for.
FOOM.

Cl ick here for the original on dA! I can't wait to revisit Goldenrod someday ...
Cl ick here for the original page on dA! If you click through there, you can see original AC, too, and how "Yule wasn't supposed to ask that question." This was back when I didn't script the entire chapter beforehand; I would just have a few basic plot points in mind and go for it. Looking back, tho, I'm happy that Yule asked that question. It's a nice start to him gaining more agency.

Editing-wise: I added emphasis to Equinox's dialogue (the "I") to make a parallel between the line he's talking about versus the literal line Silver had crossed versus the more intangible one Silver crossed. Lots of lines here.
Equinox is confused.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! I was so happy to type out Equinox's "???" exactly how I originally envisioned it.
This is not exaggerated: in Eclipse's first battle, he got down to one HP. The playthrough would've been a lot different if that was a KO ...

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! Not much here, just the usual edits. I was tempted to change Eclipse's response to Yule's apology, since it reads a little flat four years later, but for the sake of not deviating too much from the original, I left it as-is.
Painful flashback in more ways than one.

Cl ick here for the original version of this page on dA! Here's where all those editing decisions come to a head!! I'm really happy with how the tones turned out, and cleaning up the untyped dialogue even a little bit makes a huge difference, I think. I also ended up cleaning Equinox on the side there a lot since the scan made him grayed out/ fall into the background.
Eclipse evolved ... into a Flareon.

A lot of people have asked about this decision, and my answer is simply "Lonely nature." Having a pokemon that utilized their nature properly was more important to me than typing. However, Equinox's point is a valid one.

Cl ick here for the original update on dA! Edits here were interesting; since I decided that the flashbacks were inner dialogue, meaning not typed up, most of the dialogue on this page was left unedited. So, I decided to try to clean up the flashback dialogue so that it was at least easier to read. I made all the letters separate from one another. It was an interesting challenge, but it's not something I would want to do instead of typing out dialogue.
Audible flashbacks and ominous shadows.

Cl ick here for the original page on dA! I decided to keep the flashbacks throughout this save written instead of typed to keep the difference between internal dialogue and external. That way, it's clearer that only Silver can hear what Yule is mulling over.
Yeah, I did this. There are a few spaces in Burnt Tower where Silver does not react, so I went back and forth to level-up.

Cl ick here for the original version of the page on dA! I love all these little interactions between the characters ...
