Check & Mate

Check & Mate

by Lovely Marshmallow
This is the story about how one boy completely destroys another boy's life.

Bishop, a young entrepreneur, attends an academy for the offspring of the wealthy and cultured. Growing up, his family would not have been classified as "wealthy" or "cultured". At best, try "lower middle class" and "raised by a single parent". Rubbing elbows with the rich and bratty isn't Bishop's game of choice, but he sees it as a means to an end. Still doesn't change the fact that he has zero actual f-cks to give for most of his peers...save for one person:

Rook, a guy with enough skeletons in his closet to fill a graveyard, has spent the greater part of his life trying to live up to his parents' lofty expectations. From as far back has he can remember, the necessity to please them has impacted every aspect of his existence.

Bishop isn't the sort to play a game he knows he'll lose. With patience and shrewd calculation, Bishop is about to take Rook's "king" for his very own.

His Name
Originally I didn't plan on giving Rook a proper name, but then I realized his parents, in keeping with their personalities, wouldn't ever call their son by a nickname. As far as his name goes, I literally pulled it out my ass. --____-- I usually put a lot of thought into them, relying on the name's meaning to help construct a personality for the character. Since his parents and a couple other side characters will be the only ones calling him that, I just threw together names with a spelling that seemed to match his parent's inclinations.

Yeh, I just spent an entire paragraph on naming a fictional character. Shutting up now.
Update Schedule
Let's overlook that I've already fallen off the wagon of my update schedule. In my defense, it was Easter, and family time...and I kinda had a time with coloring the page. I just can't decide on the amount of detail I do or do not want. =___= Kinda sad, too, since there's basically no dialogue for this page...
Fan Service
Talk about hittin' them books, bruh! X___x

It'll be a while before these two get this comfortable, so here's some early love for the ocular orbs. I tried to be tasteful and not just be like: NAKEDNESS. Know what I mean?

[Of course mah bebeh boi Rook would keep his socks on. Pffffft!]
Extra Update
I was going to wait to upload this page on Wednesday, but it seemed pointless for the next update to have so little content. I know how I feel when I'm reading a web comic and the author does that. ^__^; Not to say that in the future I won't fall prey to that, but for now, I want there to be more substance for readers to tune into.

Speaking of updates, I'm going to aim for twice a week, Sundays and Wednesdays. It may be a lofty goal, since I work and am a mommy of two, but we'll see.

[Side Note: That school took FOREVER to do...and it's still wonky in places. Orz Perspective isn't my strong suit. Eh-heh. *dies*]
Don't Get Used To It
Multiple uploads to start. This is just for now, since we're only beginning, I'm sorry that this will not be my norm. Orz
Here We Go!
I'm all nerves, I haven't done comics in a looooong time. Please have patience with my pacing. I forgot comics have a more abrupt flow than novels. My dialogue keeps wanting to get out of hand. ^___^;;;
I have been here before, under a different name, over 8 years ago. My old works will return, but for now, here is my newest venture. I have not done a comic with mature content and themes, so this will be an interesting process. I hope you will join me for the full journey.
