Time to Fly

by Mamo
Lorenzas Greyrier is a Star-Rank 1 Close Combat Division pilot in the 23rd Aerosquadron of the Tanektol Mentrasia, the Mentrasian national army, and has broken family tradition by becoming a pilot. His above-average ranking has made him somewhat popular with the officers and his fellow pilots, but how will he handle pressure from within his family and the expectations he shattered to continue his father and grandfather's legacy, his conflicting desire to attain the highest pilot ranking yet appease his infuriated family...and subtle romantic advances from his best friend?!

Contains shounen-ai, profanity, sensitive politics, and is written to approximate the historical era of the 1930s-1940s. Traditionally colored.

Yup, you guessed it.
I'm not really sure this should surprise anybody.

Honestly, I think I was working way too hard on TtF to be practical. And it was a little premature anyway. So anyway, I think that this thing deserves a lot more love than I'm giving it right now.

Basically I think it's time for me to rethink the plot. Obviously it's not like this is too earth-shattering at this point, we were only three pages in for God's sake. XD Also, my art has been improving since I last drew a TtF page, and I've realized that everything looks a lot better when I draw without... overthinking everything, I guess. I tried to make TtF formulaic and simple, thinking I would be more likely to work on it that way, but obviously I'm no psychology major and I misjudged my own motivations. XD Anyway, I'll be leaving these pages up for now as reference, as on my new laptop I have none of the old TtF work (I'll need to convert everything first).

Characters, L to R T to B are:
Tamsen Lor Me
Duniron Kitosha Matika

I like Mati and Lor the best, the others are sort of... meh, but still cute. X3 And yes, that's my laptop. XD Obviously in a time period that emulates the 1940s they have no clue what a laptop is. XD

Thank you all for bearing with me, all fourteen of you (since my fifteenth fan is myself XDDDDD)! It won't be for nothing, I promise.
Well THAT took forever, didn't it! I thought I'd never get to upload this page. I practically had a meltdown last week, my scanner didn't appear to be working. Needless to say I was furious at being unable to post page three as promised. Luckily I calmed myself and reinstalled the software, and that seems to have done the trick. XD

Not quite sure how I feel about this page. If you'll notice, the moon is still a giant heavenly emote in the background, lulz, but I think I'll be omitting that from now on. The first and sixth panel were drawn last, and reflect the fact that I've been rereading some of my favorite webcomics; Honeydew Syndrome appears to have influenced my noses. XDDDD And, sadly, Mr. Prick is still nameless (his friends are Malarto and Kitosha, respectively), and evidently still an idiot. He said that Lor had committed "rank treachery," which would imply that he betrayed his fellows for someone of lesser or higher rank, but what Mr. Prick really meant was in fact filial treachery, and he was referring to the fact that Lor chose to become an Aero rather than a Terro.

In other news I think I may have to go to all-digital once chapter one is finished. My grey markers in particular are starting to go dry, and I doubt I can keep up with TtF during college if I'll be spending cash on markers periodically. I'm sure that's a huge relief to those who prefer digital coloring. That said I'm only familiar with Photoshop, and don't have it on a disc (I borrowed a copy from an art professor of mine and thusly don't have a disc of my own), so I may have to dole out cash on that. >< But that'd be a one time thing, presumably, and provided I'll have enough space on my laptop (once THAT's purchased) it's probably a better long-term investment.

Other than that thanks so much for reading! Hopefully I'll have some decent time to myself to work on pages soon.
Meep, I agree, great colouring.

I can't colour anything traditionally, not with markers at least. I fail when I try, I do stuff digital all the way.

Oh and I love your chibis. Fav tiem!
My gosh, thank you! <3 It's taken me years of trial and error to get my coloring to look this good, but it also helps that I sprung for the expensive artists' markers. XD I'm so glad you like it!
I love the colouring you do. =) It's so amazing to look at. :O
For those new to the comic or those who didn't read the Terminology page, I'd like to point out that "Terro" isn't short for "Terrorist." XD It's short for, in this case, Terrosquadron soldier. It's also short for, in other circumstances, Terrosquadron (As in 8th TerroLo, or 8th Long-Range Terrosquadron).

Now about this page in general, I have mixed feelings about it. While I was drawing and inking it I held absolute burning loathing for it. XD But I had the time of my life coloring and shading the Terro uniforms, and now that the dialogue is in and it's finished I think it's awesome and a joy to look at. Pretty weird, I'd say. XD

So yeah, enter the prick! And his non-prick buddies, who are sick of him acting like a prick (he wasn't always like that, evidently). He and Lor have had run-ins with each other before, which explains Lor's displeasure at his presence and being spotted by him as well as Mr. Prick's (called so because all three of them are nameless right now XD) insulting names for Lor and Tam respectively. He, like many on the base, thinks Tam is an idiot just because he doesn't speak much.

Lor is surprised to see them there because as you may have forgotten since updates are so sporadic, he's on the AIRFIELD. And the TERROS are GROUND soldiers, they have no business whatsoever on an airfield. PARTICULARLY, in Lor's opinion, the 23rd Aerosquadron section of the airfield outside Hangar U-5. XD

Anyway, enjoy! And yet AGAIN I update at five in the morning, it's amazing to me that my best work seems to happen while most of the country is asleep. XD
Awww looky, Jack twin is cuddling Kris twin xD they're so aschmorable.
Yes, yes. I know I said I wasn't motivated. But thanks to a dear friend of mine, I thought of this pose and was thereby motivated to draw its adorableness. And it turned out so WELL, too! But man, Lorenzas looks COMPLETELY uke in this picture. XD But he's got Tam whipped, make no mistake. ;D They're not even together yet and Tam is basically his servant. And again, I've done some of my best work at four in the morning. XD

Regarding the little bubble-ish circles, I haven't a clue myself. I thought of abstract backgrounds and it was the first thing to come to mind. XD Again, this also has a few mistakes, but I'm still very, very happy with it! <3 Actually, this is the first time I've ever drawn Tamsen in color! And because they're closed, I'll tell you that his eyes are spruce green. <333 Additionally, that cloud is my first attempt at a TtF logo. I think I like it, but I may play around with more ideas on future chapter covers.

Also, I still find it funny that the FIRST chapter is called "Interlude" because, well... it's the first one... Anybody else think that's funny? X3;;
It is traditional. ^^ I use an ink pen and Prismacolor markers. They're expensive but great. <3
This is cute x3!! I LOVE pilots <33
How do you color O_O? it looks amazing and hard! (And traditional)
The REAL first page!
Okay, I honestly couldn't wait any longer. I finished this page today and was so proud of myself that I just could not handle the idea of having to wait any longer to show it to the world. There are plenty of mistakes in it, but I still love it and I'm damned proud of it.

I drew that plane from MEMORY, I'm still amazed with how nice it turned out.

If you can't make out the sign on the airfield, it says "24 Ae DEPLOYED," meaning the 24th Aerosquadron is currently off-base on assignment.
First page halelujah!
Okay, so it's not a real PAGE page, but at least it's something. Here's Lor, in all his technicolor glory. <3 There are things I don't like about this picture, particularly the plane hangar, but I'm damned proud of this overall.

And admittedly yes, I know that in the real 1940s there would NOT have been color photographs. But 1: This is a comic 2: this is a BL 3: This is an entirely different planet. So humor me here plzkthx.

Please read the characters list first before you read the comic, it'll make things a lot easier to understand! (Same thing with the Terminology page. <3)
