I saw lots of Hoothoot popping about, and then I noticed - in a tree overlooking the invisible border between the Azalea town line and Route 33, a Noctowl sits and watches the Hoothoot do their exploratory dancing. Maybe it's keeping them safe.

Well...night. I'm getting sleepy, and Munchlax and Elekid are asleep on my lap.

We've been sleeping out under the stars. The Pokemon Center is a little crowded for such a small town, and it's a small center. Lots of other Trainers are here to see Kurt or battle Bugsy (I'll challenge him, too, eventually,) or they're just passing through to get to Ilex Forest.

The forest looks mysterious and foreboding. Maybe I'll go out with my Pokemon and explore tomorrow.

There are Hoothoot everywhere here - I guess I never really noticed how many of them there are before, since I usually fall asleep pretty quickly. (In Ecruteak, we don't have the same local Pokemon as the southern parts of Johto, and besides that they mostly stay in the Burned Tower...) They're fascinating. They hop around on one leg - I'm not even sure if they have two to begin with - and coo in the moonlight.

We had more travel time in between making a stop this time around. Time to prepare for challenging the next gym leader, Bugsy, and maybe have a look around at the local Pokemon.
'Till next time!

Oh, yeah. Those wild Pokemon we spotted? Well, a cute little Sentret on Route 33 popped up to talk to us as Wigglytuff and I ran by. We couldn't spare the time, as there were some shady characters hanging around Slowpoke Well, but out of the corner of my eye I could swear I saw another furry little face poking through the grass...

I was waiting in line at the restrooms, and at the sinks we saw a Trainer and Feraligatr, side by side - the guy was shaving, and get this - his Feraligatr was brushing its teeth! Times really are a changin', huh? He explained that he was actually a highly advanced Trainer, with six badges already, but that they had taken a detour back in order to beg homemade Pokeballs from the local grouchy craftsman, Kurt. They said he'd make unique Pokeballs with special properties the old-fashioned way, using Apricorns that Trainers bring him, but it takes more than just a grin and a plant to get Gramps to want to give you one. Hence all the freshening up beforehand. Guess we'll have to check that out later...

Despite the next opponent's greater experience, we managed to toast her Croconaw on account of Elekid dealing some great damage with its super-effective Thundershock! Looks like fighting Falkner's Pidgey (and even Pidgeotto, probably) gained it a level or two!

We spotted a couple wild Pokemon on the way, too, but that can wait - the strangest sight awaited us at the Pokemon Center.

Of course other battles awaited us inside. We fought a new Trainer's Totodile, fresh from the gym like us, and it managed to get the better of my speedy Crobat by latching on and not letting go - something that Totodile is known for, I believe! Crobat wasn't too happy, but it ended up being a good battle.

I also saw a Typhlosion stretching awake outside the local Pokemon Center. We got into a couple battles and headed into Union Cave!

In the morning we made the final hike towards the tunnel leading to our next Gym Battle. I saw a Quilava trying to knock some Pineco down for its trainer (I feel like they should have a TM for that -- the scrambling up into trees just didn't look quite right.)

After beating Falkner, my Pokemon and I continued on our journey. We ended up stuck on our way to Azalea Town (You know how long that route can be!) and I ended up camping with another Trainer for the night. We swapped tales, the Pokemon got along famously, and as the fire was dying down while we shook out our sleeping bags, I asked if I could sketch his sweet little Cyndaquil.

Isn't she a cutie? She may be snoozing in the picture, but Cyndaquil was very energetic when perked up! She got along well with Elekid and was very friendly, although obviously a low level on account of she kept bursting into flame. Her Trainer said he'd be challenging Gyms, but they'd just been beaten at Falkner's, so they were practicing by fighting against the type-advantaged Fishermen. Tough training regime, but there was lots of love there.

And of course we went to the gym once we got here! I know my types, so I called out Elekid to fight Falkner. We beat Pidgey, but Elekid's low level and those blasted mud and sand attacks rendered the poor guy helpless! I eventually had to call out Crobat to take Pidgeotto down in the sky.

Phew...I'm all tuckered out, and the journey's just begun! Finally I'll get to see Sprout Tower for longer than those class trips back in elementary school, before I dropped out at the age of ten.

And when running through Goldenrod, trying not to get hit by mad bicyclists going straight down the middle of the main road, I practically ran into this one trainer, Beauty...beauty something or other. Anyway, her Meganium is a beaut! He was more than happy to pose for a picture.

And I even saw a Bayleef, too. Crobat helped catch its attention so I could do a sketch for later.

I spied a Chikorita on my journey towards Violet City... I grew up in Ecruteak, you see, so there's a bit of a trek to get back to where we begin. It was a precious little thing!
