pretty funny how less that a week and a half later he creates a giant clusterfuck with blood and guts spilled everywhere, yet here he is casual as fuck

Shutting the gate...
I wouldn't worry too much about how the folks in Berrik close the gate. It's been drawn so that it's easy to close by having the horses simply walk backwards. See the wheel on the lower right-hand corner? This is why BMB's attention to detail is appreciated... You can fill in most of the unspoken narrative stuff just by looking more carefully at each drawing. Brilliant.

The Little Details
I love the details...how the wall segments the original street, curb and sidewalks...the horse trough and feed...the breaks in the wall and attempts at repair (from hostile action or age?)...the I-beam bracing...I've been reading this since the beginning and am very impressed with the tremendous amount of details and excellent shadowing given with such a simple greyscale pallet!! Great artwork, concept, imagination, storyline...in all a terrific artist who is willing to share his story and skill for free to us lurkers and I want to thank you!!!

Or perhaps the gate is on an incline? The horses are actually pulling the gate open by going uphill, it closes by just following gravity's pull, then the guard locks it shut.

Gate Mechanism
You know, a large counter-weight attatched to a pully system would negate the need for the horses altogether. In a seige-type situation when they want the gate to be hard to open they could just disconect the counterweight with the pull of a pin just like weight machines at the gym.

Concrete slabs...
That's how most warehouses are made now...There's one case of mobsters using big cranes to lift them up and away to rob the warehouse's contents...
As for closing the door...ever heard of pulleys? Use two then you only need one horse!

answer to a technical question, and more question
I was thinking about closing gate to. Can They hook up the horses on the other side, close the gate, and then lift horses with crane? just kidding. It is easy to adjust the hinges so that the gate itself came back into place. There is a lock on the gate, medieval style, very appropriate. I love all these details! But why they build gate so big, that king kong can fit inside it? all the tribes in the world made that mistake ONCE, i gues... :)
