Asking Permission for Hosting Something

Postby Lightning S. 464 » July 4th, 2012, 12:41 am

I am a member on gametechmods.com, the last active Robot Arena 2 community. What is Robot Arena 2 (RA2)? Back in the day when Battlebots and Robot Wars were popular, video games were being based off of them, and it was the only half decent one. This was largely due to not being able to design robots externally, but internally. Even the chassis shape was up to the player. All sorts of wheels, motors, spikes and more could be put on. Then once the building was done, you could fight your robots.

Now that you know about that, onto gametechmods. Here is the modern day RA2 community, for better or worse. Anyway, RA2 has a multiplayer option where you can battle friends online, but there is a huge problem with this: lag, and lots of it. So, a few years ago, someone figured out how to have user-created bots compete without lag: tournaments. What would happen is the users would send their robots to the host and he/she would give the bots AI (Artificial Intelligence), all before posting videos of the battles.

The reason I give this history lesson in here is because I'm asking for permission. I want to host a tournament for Smack Jeeves users. I think it'll be fun, seeing how different people rank up.
What would happen is: I would first make a thread for sign-ups (see examples here: http://gametechmods.com/forums/index.ph ... ,94.0.html ) and in here, I would give the download link to the actual game and lots of advice and instructions on how to enter and make good robots. Also, most importantly, I have a basic knowledge of how to AI and can do just that to all robots.

After the deadline for signups has come (I'll give plenty of time) I'll make a new thread for the splash (robot that have entered), brackets (rankings) and videos. (See examples here: http://gametechmods.com/forums/index.ph ... ,95.0.html )

Finally, after all that is done, I'll make a thread where users vote in their comments for various awards. (See examples here: http://gametechmods.com/forums/index.ph ... 105.0.html )

Also, I guess I have one question: IF this were to be allowed, where would I post it?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and please answer. Please note that this is NOT for advertising purposes (as everything is free), I just had the idea of this happening and thought it would be fun.

It would be allowed, and you can post in either the General Discussion forum or the Video Games subforum.
I'd be surprised if there was much interest in it, though. It's hard enough to find people to play with here that already have and know the game. You're effectively advertising a game that's new to most people here and asking them to play. It won't be easy, but it's not against the rules and it doesn't hurt to try.

I recommend keeping all of this to a single thread once you make it, by the way. This forum isn't active enough to warrant multiple threads for something like this, and most people here are used to the first part of such a thread being sign-ups.
Busy, busy.

Thank you :P

I'll be sure to keep it all in one thread. Whoever locks these topics can now do just that.
