Roby's Sketchbook

Postby robybang » July 20th, 2012, 5:27 pm

I'm not really good at drawing hands, but since I finished my Nuzlocke and my other comic is on hiatus. So I'm taking the time off to brush up on stuff I suck at.

I used the ad on the left for reference. He doesn't match up though, which happens whenever I try to draw from a photo.

yeah, i try not to ever look at a picture while i'm drawing.
personally, if i need to use a photograph for reference, i'll just stare at it for a few minutes to take it all in. then i close (or put away) the image, and draw from memory. even if it doesn't match up, it ends up looking more organic(?) that way.

otherwise, nice illustration there. :)

I usually like drawing objects that are in front of me, I know I sound like a frumpy art teacher but it does give you a sense of its 3d form when its there.

When using photos for reference, do what reverentjack suggested, take the photos in and elarn from them instead of copying. However, when/if you're actually trying to draw from a photo instead of just using it as ref, not being able to draw it as it appears can be a problem. The reason: You're drawing what you think you're seeing instead of what you're seeing. You need to train your eyes to see values, forms, and shapes rather than "faces" and such. You need to draw what's there. This is a very useful skill for doing studies. The sooner you start seeing things for what they are, the sooner you can start drawing them accurately, even when working without reference.

Try drawing from photos upside down. That will cause your brain to see the photo more as a collection of shapes than anything it recognizes immediately as a face. Once you get better at that, go back to having your photo right side up, and draw it while not thinking in terms of human features.
Busy, busy.

Experimented with inking in Illustrator. Is this an improvement or worse than my Photoshop stuff?
