More of these studies, which are becoming the focus again, since the comic is being posted elsewhere. Need to find some of those vine sticks.

I think what lacks in your pencil/charcoal work is depth and contrast. The shading lacks values; the dark parts are too light, which makes the highlight ineffective and dull. In effect, the drawing looks flat which is why it lack depth as well.

I think you should make the really shadowy parts darker, maybe use a 5b or 6b pencil for that. For midtones, try using a 2b to 4b, then leave the highlighted areas clean.

It's already been a year and a half...? Anyways, here's some stuff I forgot to post here from then until now. I got pretty burnt out and needed a break, and will focus more on doing and finishing things more thoroughly through the try/anaylze/solve approach.
Life paintings done in Sai last year.

Decided to do these for fun. Psychotic adventurer Lara Croft from the Core Design era and a redraw of Luffy from the first half of One Piece. Tried some basic cell shading with a blue/cyan color in Sai.

Landscapes done in Colors 3D (on a that tiny 3DS screen) since I stopped actively posting in this thread.

The third and fifth were drawn (and embellished) from some photos I found on the earthporn reddit; the first is from my imagination, and the rest were sketched/photographed on location and finished later on.
Just spent yesterday doing pixel art for the first time in Pyxel Edit, and am loving the program to bits. I tried to make the 32x32 tiles seamless. WIP right now, and the result of following a few different tutorials.

That Crash sprite isn't mine though, it was placed there for scale when doing that bush and those rocks, since the size of the sprite was spot on for this. And I might be thinking of doing a 2D platform game as a way to learn some programming, after I'm finished with this tileset and an original character sprite.

The one from your imagination really sticks out, color-wise. Looks like you're good at seeing colours (since even your on-location pieces have good colours), but haven't quite figured out the logic to them yet to use in your from-imagination pieces. In particular, the colour shifts in that first piece are very abrupt, and some of the colours are extremely saturated, giving the overall impression that nothing in the piece affects the colours of anything else in the piece, and giving the water the look of opaque paint. With an odd location like that especially, unity in the colours is what would make it look like one location and not two halves of different paintings pasted together.

I've recommended a place to get feedback on pixel art before, but I figured I'd add this: Don't wait until you have a tileset and a spriteset done to dive into the programming. Seeing your art in-game, even before it's done, is better than any mockup (and faster to put together for each revision, too). Plus, without having some of the game's coding done, you can't know the exact requirements for your game's art (sprite sizes, frame counts, types of terrain, number and types of tiles required to show each type of terrain element, etc).

Whoa, it's been a minute. I have a lot of art that I haven't posted here or anywhere else. Here's the most recent batch, which was done for fun, not for a class or anything. It's this color scheme challenge, and the colors were mixed using these two methods. All from imagination again, keeping eishiya's criticism in mind.

Old ones, done in Colors 3D way back in 2013, probably posted in this thread already, but here they all are in order;

New ones. These took progressively longer, as I got more ambitious with wanting to imply a narrative and backstory starting with the 3rd one. The first 2 took 2 to 4 hours, the 3rd and 4th around 5 hours, the 5th 7 hours and the last took 10 hours. The last one looks purple on my gaming PC monitor, but looks blue on my laptop and on the pen display I painted these on.

The image you are critiquing is, impressively, nearly 8 years old

This is one of my older characters who I made back in high school, Kimi. Intended to be the short ranged, combat focused character in a 2d action platformer. Basically the Zero of the game.

Old as dirt design from a decade ago.

WIP. Sketched in Krita, vectored and manually in betweened in OpenToonz, and rasterized and colored in Krita. I'm conflicted about her head. Should it turn slightly along with her upper body?

Her expression looks focused on something, so no, I don't think the head should turn.

Her lower abdomen/crotch seems to jerk rather suddenly when her hand opens up/rises, that motion feels out of place.
