SJ Art collab, round 5 sketch. Theme: pain

By the way, I've been thinking that I should probably present my sketchbook pages in a better format than "horribly large single image". I'll probably split the individual drawings out and resize them a little. You guys think that would be a more readable setup?

trenton_dawn's sketchbook! New format! ALSO drawing your OCs

Postby trenton_dawn » November 22nd, 2010, 7:01 pm

Alright, I'm gonna try something different today. Instead of dumping a few massive images into this thread, I'm going to break them down and resize them. In case anyone liked the old format, I'll still have the thumbnails and links in this spoiler:

Also, I am taking requests if you want me to draw your characters or whatever. To be honest, it will probably take me a week or two to get to them, but request away! They'll get done eventually.

Personally, I've found that I like the set up I like best in sketchbooks is where there are spoiler tags with a few related images in them, as I do in my sketchbook thread. I also think that there's no reason to have very large images. If large images are a necessity, I feel that it's best to provide a comfortable viewing size (not a thumbnail, but not the huge size either), and then a link to the larger version. A lot of people don't really care about all those tiny details.

Yeah, that's a great idea. With this last post, I started cutting them down to 50% size, which helps a lot. Thanks for the spoiler tag tip.

Instead of thinking percentages, think final viewing size. I try to keep my images below 900px in their longest direction, so that they fit on the average monitor with minimal scrolling.

The drawings show a great deal of potential. I see some strong forms and gestures in them but there appears to be something missing from the characters ... like they are a bit too similar to a generic anime style - the style of the 2d Pokemon show? Don't take this as a slam/harsh criticism - I'm comparing your work done by large teams of professional animators!

Where'd you get that comparison? I don't really see a similarity to that style at all...

Aside from a general anime influence, I don't see the similarity at all. Nothing Pokemon-specific for sure.

You'll find that a lot of artists on this site (and almost any amateur art site nowadays) have a strong anime influence on their work. That's not even worth pointing out.

You're definitely correct about the generic anime influence! I've been trying to branch out and try new things recently, but it's very hard. Still, the anime-style will probably always form part of my base style because it's where I started. I don't see the Pokemon connection, though--but I'd probably be flattered if there was one.
