Searching for Artist

Postby Starcloud12 » June 23rd, 2012, 10:56 am

I am currently hoping to partner up with an artist for a manga about the friendship between a girl and a whale. Well, it wouldn't just be about the friendship, but I'm still developing the story in my head currently (I just dreamed the inspiration this morning).

Plot:
6 year old Rika Sawachi and her somewhat nutty grandpa, Dr. Sawachi, go to the beach by a lake one afternoon. It has been almost a year since Rika has last been there and she is remembering how it looked last year because a lot of changes have taken place. As Rika looks at what used to be a big beach, the wind picks up and the waves get bigger. At one point, Rika narrowly dodges a wave that rolls up on shore and rolls into the parking lot. To her surprise, the wave becomes like a rolled up matt instead of a puddle of water. Inside she sees this little fishlike creature, which Dr. Sawachi informs her to be a baby Native Whale. They save the Native Whale from the wave and decide to take it home.
Fast forward to 10 years later. Now Rika is a teenager working part-time at the local aquarium where she helps take care of her best friend, Nichi. Nichi is the Native Whale that Rika saved 10 years ago, now a friendly teen himself. Nichi and Rika work together to solve issues within the facility and possibly even elsewhere. What does the future hold for this friendship?

Okay, I know that this plot might be a little confusing, but the type of wave in this story is one created by my dream. The story doesn't really take place on Earth, but more of in a place created by my imagination.

Anyway, I'm looking for an artist who will:
-Draw right to left (manga style)
-Tries for one page a week updates (though I'm understanding if there is a need to skip any weeks)
-Does not need a script-like form of writing to draw (I do more of a novel form)

I haven't set up the profile for the manga yet, but I will later after coming up with a title (I'm open for suggestions). I'll also post some charater concept art (I would draw this myself, but I already have enough comics to draw, so I'm limiting myself to writing right now).
If anyone is interested, just post here or message me. If anyone has any questions, just ask and I'll answer.

I hope to partner up with someone on this soon!
-Starcloud

Edit: The profile has been set up. The title is Nichi's Story (because it was the best I could think of while making the profile). Here's the link to the profile: http://www.smackjeeves.com/comicprofile.php?id=121987

The setting is in Japan? Or you're just fond of manga and anime that you name them Japanese?

Names are just names but it won't fit well with the story if there's no definite reason since characters have backgrounds too. Also, Japanese names are already cliche. There's no problem if the setting is right but you have to know the culture too.

From your basic summary, sounds like it's a children story of some sort.
Anyway, good luck with your project.

Um, actually the setting is not in Japan. The setting can't even be considered to be on Earth.
I just like Japan and have a tendicy for my stories to add Japanese elements. Also, my mom named Nichi and I just felt like giving Rika the last name I gave her. Her first name just seems to fit with her. I don't really bother much with meaning behind names, just whether the sound of the name fits my character. Hard to explain.

I kinda do like to keep the stories child appropriate, though there will be a bit of violence possibly in this story. I couldn't include it in the plot, but the beach was actually closed when Rika went there because there were 2 kinds of dangerous fish that were attacking people. (The fish are fictional species, though.)

Thanks. :3

Well, I don't think this will be a little project. I can actually see it lasting a couple of chapters, even a couple of volumes. It will pretty much be a long term project in manga style.
Also, Nichi is supposed to look adorable (I'm going to be posting some concept art to work as a reference for the artist later).
(I really don't think of all the warnings I need to give people until I need to give them.)
Well, if you want to read some of my writing, though not exactly for this story, you could visit my deviantart page: http://starcloud12.deviantart.com/ I have a couple of stories here.

Actually, I'm open to any artist that think they can handle a long term manga project that is more cute in style than serious. Seriously, though, it's best to keep the art cute looking or else I might have nightmares after seeing the carnivorous fish. O^O

Still looking for an artist. Anyway, here is some character art with description:

[This spot reserved for when I finish Rika's]
I'm bad at taking pictures and was too lazy to use my scanner, so I'm using gimp to draw over the pictures. Sorry this isn't the best.

Not all artists can work for an indefinite period of time when you don't have anything to offer to your artist(s) in return. Artists are hard to find and most often, they're just looking for short projects. If you don't have anything to make your artist(s) stay, they'll just disappear without notice.

I've seen at least one comic here in SJ with a free writer/artist collab that's still going fine for years, but that's really rare. It's natural in webcomic making that most partnerships just don't last long.

I can see your point. Thank you for informing me of some of the difficulties that I face. :3
Well, I can't say that there wouldn't be anything the artist would get in return. It would be a partnership, so if the artist wanted to sell the comic, then we can split the profit 50/50. If they just wanted to do the comic for fun and/or improvement of skills, that is fine too.
Plus, there might be other benefits too. I just don't know what they would be as of right now.

Just wanted to update and say that I'm not strict. If there is an artist who is willing to work with me, I don't mind if they want to draw it left to right instead of right to left or if they want to do a random update schedule instead of a weekly one.

Thanks, but I was looking for a drawing artist, which I have now found.
I'm actually a guitar player myself (though not that good if good at all). Though this isn't the point of this thread, I might as well ask: How do you switch between chords like C to D or something like that? (Best to PM me the answer if you answer since this would put the thread off topic)

For anyone else: I have found an artist to draw Nichi's Story, so this thread is no longer needed. :3
