Help on inking

Postby xxRabbit_Freakxx » November 1st, 2009, 10:02 am

My webcomic look crappy and I think its the way I ink(or the way I draw *cry*). Maybe because my tracing is bad or I'm not using the right pens or I need to wait till Christmas to get a tablet. Can you take a look at it and tell me what to do about it?

first off, what kind of pen and paper are you using? these can make a big difference in the quality of your art.
secondly, the problem also may not lie in the inking, but in the shading. what art program are you using? the white lines in between the shades and the inking also look a little amateurish, but that can be fixed by putting the shades on a new "multiply" layer over the inking layer.
don't feel bad about your inking skills. i've been inking for 7 years and i still suck at it. practice and try new techniques and if you're serious about wanting to get better, you will. also, don't get a tablet just because you think it will make you a better artist or will help you ink better. good tablet drawing stems from good traditional skills in most cases.

Well, you're still pretty young, but I think you need to practice drawing more. It really doesn't matter what pens or pencils you draw with, if you draw well it'll show, regardless if you're doodling on a napkin or on a sheet of $30 paper. And what are you tracing exactly? Tracing doesn't teach you anything, really, though perhaps you could try copying some things instead, like photos.

It's alright to feel as if you need to improve, everyone should feel that regardless of how good they are. Just keep drawing. If you do that, you'll get better with time and practice.

I think she means tracing what she already drew in pencil. My advice for that would be to keep your sketches as basic as possible, so when you ink it, it will look less stiff, less like a tracing, and more spontaneous.

My advice would be to keep practicing! Experiment as much as you can, and just keep going, you're still learning. Good luck!
