Fastest Way to Apply Base Colors in Paint Tool SAI?????

Postby Kairin Touzen » May 23rd, 2012, 9:48 am

I've been goin' crazy finding out the fastest way to apply base colors with Paint Tool SAI since it has a different kind of Magic Wand compared to that of Adobe Photoshop's...
I've been watching speedpaints lately, but yet I can't get how they could make a selection fast with the Magic Wand..

Uh.. please help me.. I want to learn a fast way of applying base colors.. It's the only thing that takes much of the time I have for coloring @____@

Thank you in advanced.

Selection source.

Finish your lineart, select the lineart layer as Selection Source in the layer menu (beneath preserve opacity), select the bucket tool and select the Selection Source option on the tool menu. Voilá. Just bucket everything.

H-holy cow!!! You just have saved my life :o

A-anyway... Can I ask for a little more?
I just don't understand what "Selection Source" or "Preserve Opacity" means yet (I don't know their exact functions)

Also, I discovered that once I make the lineart the Selection Source, when I use the Magic Wand without pressing Shift, it selects the whole area. When I press Shift, it selects the area trapped within the lineart O___O Can I have an explanation please? I just wanna understand it better. Thank you! XD

Selection Source means the layer you have selected as SS will be the source of selection ;). When you select this option, it's as if you're working on the SS layer.

Preserve Opacity is Transparency Lock. Select this and you can color over your lines. It means the transparent/Not drawn areas will be locked and you won't be able to draw on them. It's good for recoloring lineart or for changing color schemes.

It's most likely a short cut. You're telling the want to select SS.

I hope this helped.

Fastest way to apply colors in PTS is to copy & paste the lineart into a new layer and fill it with paint bucket, and your top layer will still have the original clean lineart, and the one beneath it will have the layer getting filled up with the colors.

Ive had paint tool sai for years now and I still have no clue what the selection source does. I tried playing around with it and i have no clue what it does. Can someone like give me an example of what to do where i can witness its magical abilities?

And here I've been coloring everything by hand forever...
My original manga is indefinitely on hiatus (sorry!).
It is going to be gutted and restarted because I started it prematurely.
