If you were dying what would happen to your webcomic?

Postby mosama » June 24th, 2012, 9:13 am

It's a thought that had me thinking for a while last night. If you were told that you only had a set amount of time to live- like 1-6 months maybe, would you still work on your webcomic? How often? Would you stick with your same webcomic or try and make a better one in your last days alive? What would you tell your readers?

I don't think I'd tell them right away. That's just the sort of person I am.

I don't know if I'd even keep updating. Part of me would probably be like, "whats the point?" if I already knew I was going to die. I would put up the script so people could at least finish the story if they wanted, even if it isn't drawn. I don't know if I'd tell them I was dying though. THAT'S DEPRESSING. I think I'd just make up some other reason, even if made people mad at me.

...but then I'd probably feel bad for lying and tell them the truth at the last possible moment.

But, yeah, I don't really know. Just hope it doesn't happen because goddamn I want to finish my comics.

if i was dying NOW i wouldn't be able to finish it

so the comic would slowly change into a lot of weird imagery and things that made no sense

and then the last page, everyone would die. IM TAKIN THEM OUT WITH ME.

I'd draw the shit out of myself until I finish juxtapose if I was given a couple months to live. If there was a comic of mine that I wanted to finish, it'd be that. I probably wouldn't tell my readers if I was sick and dying, though, lol.

Uhh hmm... hmmm...
I always did wonder what i'd do with all of my stories if i were to die/ didn't finish them while i was alive.
I'd probably write it all out and then pass on giving them to close friends and family to read and wonder what i was on while i wrote it haha.

I've thought about this before.

Honestly, I think I'd forget about them and just sit on my ass playing computer games drinking booze and eating cake for what remained of my life. Not the answer I like, but gotta be honest.

This is actually something that really worries me. I can't BARE the idea of dyeing without having really made something of all the stories and characters in my head. It's strange but nothing, not even failing and them being really rubbish, alarms me more than the idea of never having tried.

So I'd like to think that if I had a few months left to live I'd spend it blitzing it all out, getting every idea I care about down on paper in some readable form or other. In actual fact, though, I don't think I'd have the emotional strength or mental discipline to do it in that situation.

Yeah, I'd probably also end up doing this instead -

If I was in a scenario where I knew it would happen and knew how long I'd likely have I would spend some of that time putting together a detailed spilling of every major event and idea in and for my Universe that I have written down, so that people could know what would have happened.
A depressing scenario, though. I try not to think about stuff like that too much.

I'd laugh at how ironic the whole situation is. Try, then fail, then get close to a breakthrough, but oh- you're dying now, sorry. That said, I'd just work on it and hope that sheer determination and stubbornness is enough to scare death away. If not, well, I died doing what I love doing. Good enough.

There are three options I can think of:

1. Write down everything and find a successor, if possible; they must share my mindset and follow what I have written down closely. If you think of your works like a dynasty, they need worthy successors to continue the lineage.

2. Barring that, let the comic die in a blaze of glory! If my comic can't live without me, I will give it a glorious send-off, and write a eulogy that will be spoken during my funeral. Speaking of which, if your comic were to die with you, would any of you have a eulogy for it?

3. Figure out how to cheat death long enough I can complete the comic! For all I know that could be decades. :P

That's actually how I plan on retiring: I fall over dead one day writing something.

I have the entire thing planned out and I have about an hour of audio I made that explains the whole thing, what everything means, how it ends, etc. I would like to be able to finish over the next 8-10 years (at this rate, with 200+ pages to go), but if I can't, and I know I'm going to die in several months (as opposed to sudden death, like being executed or hit by a bus or something, which are two of the three deaths I really find likely and think of a lot) then I'll probably create some sort of short ending to wrap everything up and publish the audio explaining everything so everyone of my couple of readers will know how everything works. I think it's necessary. Judging from the few interpretations I've gotten from readers they're way off.

Actually, I just checked. The audio is on my old computer, so I'll have to re-record it. No problem, I have the script.

No one would even realize since I update them so infrequently anyway. Also, my heirs would inherit it. Half to my son, half to my daughter. I never bothered spelling out how you divvy up a web comic, so I'll leave it up to them to fight out in the courts.

No but srsly, if I was dying, I would probably try and wrap up things as best as I could.

For Comics I Made While Blindfolded, I would just let the characters slowly figure out that they were drawn while blindfolded. They would realize the pathetic nature of their existence and how meaningless it really is.

All of them would be sad that their world was created so imperfectly, but the more optimistic characters would reassure the more pessimistic characters to keep looking for a brighter future, to appreciate life for what it has to offer rather than what it does not.

Gradually, each of them would come around to self-discovery, and they all discover a door leading to a narrow staircase hallway. As they traveled further up and further in, the quality of the artwork would gradually increase until they discover a new world of artistic elegance, where they actually have real hands and feet instead of stick limbs and can appreciate their surroundings and nature in all of its glory. The final strip would have them weeping tears of joy as they watched a watercolor sunset.

The allegory would be for my time spent on earth, even though I did not get to live a full 80 year plus lifespan (in much the same way as the characters in my comic did not get to be drawn correctly), I did enjoy very much what little I had.

My only problem would be learning how to paint a watercolor sunset in the six months I had before I died.
