District 9? More like District Awesome!

Postby Vitotamito » August 14th, 2009, 9:00 am

I saw the Midnight showing of District 9 last night. It was amazing!

I'll admit, the first 15 minutes were very... slow to draw me in. If the entire movie were the first 15 minutes, I would not have enjoyed it. Once the story began, however, it got very deep and very exciting very fast. Honestly, this movie kicked all kinds of ass. Right down to the subtlety of the futuristic technology. It's set, apparently in 2002 (the footage from 20 years ago being from 1982) but the technology of the movie was slightly more advanced than we have today. And it was subtle, which made the rest of the movie feel very real and very believable. The end was a rollercoaster/tug of war match of a battle in which you had to keep switching who you were rooting for for the sake of the protagonist. I'm not giving anything away about this because it needs to be experienced with unknowing, if you follow.

I'm such a sucker for these shaky camera sci-fi flicks, I can't wait to see this.

Haven't seen it yet. Really want to. My one peeve with the film is I liked the non-CGI aliens in the original short film. These guys are so obviously CGI in comparison...they remind me of those alien termites in that SciFi (I refuse to call it SyFy) original movie with Bruce Campbell.
I'm Tooch now.

*sobs* i would love to see that movie...but sadly, if i even see a normal bug, i have muscle spasms and have to bite my thumb. a movie would send me into a seizure. all because we HAD to read metamorphosis in english senior year....DAMN YOU, KAFKA!!!!!

...sorry. XD

and have you seen the penny arcade comic on the sci-fi/syfy change? it's great. XD

i saw it as part of my sci-fi class
it was a pretty sweet movie
i dont tend to watch sci-fi movies but this one was so great, i really enjoyed it. the trailer had me a bit concerned because halfway through it seemed to be say that the movie turns into just lots of explosions rather than the documentary style filming of the first half of the trailer.. but the movie wasnt so much like that
i mean
it had lots of explosions
but not really dumb stupid macho guy ones

umm but yeah
i really liked it and the video game influences were real noticeable, like in certain parts i'd think "this'd make such a fun game"

Wait, do you mean pronounce it that way or spell it that way?
Because that's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced. :O

There's an entire Channel calling itself that.

When I was at a convention last month, I ran into someone who worked for the SciFi/SyFy channel and I asked him why the name change. He said that the channel didn't own the term "Sci Fi", and they wanted to use their name to plaster it on t-shirts, bumper stickers, the foreheads of small kids, etc.

I saw the movie last night with a friend. The story was very good, much better than I was expecting. I also thought the underlying themes in the movie, especially at the beginning, were well done. All in all, it was a good movie, and I would suggest it to anyone thats fine with a little gore.
