Ponyo!

Postby remington » August 18th, 2009, 11:17 pm

So I just got back from seeing Ponyo and I wanna talk about it!

For those not in the know, Ponyo is the latest movie out of Studio Ghibli, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It's basically a re-telling of The Little Mermaid. Ponyo, a goldfish, wishes desperately to be a human so she can be with her friend Sosuke. However, when she crosses the boundary between land and sea, the precious balance of nature gets thrown out of whack!

The first thing I want to say about this movie is that it is beautiful. Miyazaki made a point of not using ANY computer-generated effects or animation, so everything you see in Ponyo is completely hand-rendered. The animation is smooth, the character designs are great, and the backgrounds are wonderfully drawn in pastels and colored pencils. If you can see this one in the theater, absolutely do it - being able to take it all in and see every stroke of the pencil is just great!

In terms of story, Ponyo falls on the more children-oriented end of the Ghibli spectrum. But that's why I like it! It doesn't try to push boundaries and carry a heavy message, it's just a simple tale for children. Definitely more Totoro than Princess Mononoke, and that's a-okay by me.

Also, if you're worried about the dub Disney put out, don't be! It's actually very good. I wasn't expecting much out of the Disney wonderkids (Noah Cyrus and Frankie Jonas) but they did a really great job. Liam Neeson is also great as Ponyo's dad, even though his character design might lend itself better to someone like David Bowie...

Again, if you can see this in a theater, do! This seems to happen every time I see a new Ghibli movie but Ponyo just shot right up my list of favorites.

Anyway, enough out of me! Anyone else seen it yet? If not, this can be just general Ghibli chat!

MUST. SEE. FILM.
I didn't even know Miyazaki was making another film! Shows how out of the loop I am.
Can't wait to see this though. Sounds adorable. Are you serious about the Disney kids dubbing it though? I'm not so much worried (now that you've assured us it's pretty good) as I am amused.

Miyazaki is my art god. <3 My all time favorite of his is Spirited Away, which is probably my favorite movie of all time, tied with The Lion King. =P

Haha, yeah, like I said, the Disney kids do a good job, especially for being the main characters (Sosuke and Ponyo respectively). However, avoid their techno remixed version of the theme song like the PLAGUE. (actually it's right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bYDtPcRMlg but be warned: once you hear it, you can't un-hear it.) Why they decided to Autotune the whole thing I don't know.

Also, I probably should have put this in the first post, but here are the English trailers of the movie to give you an idea of how it sounds/how beautiful it all is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BfNtYF94cQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfjww2cA2FE . I dunno about you guys, but I get goosebumps every time they show that shot of Ponyo running on the waves!

Luckily for us Disney super uber duper pinky promise secret handshake sweared on Walts' grave not to alter Ghibli films. I believe a sword is involved with that story.

I'm an idiot, you said not to listen to the song, and I listened to it...

Miyazaki kicks uber-butt.

Seeing a hand-drawn animated film was refreshing, and I hope that we can see more in the future. Nobody seems to want to take a chance on any of these. I know that Disney is releasing another traditionally-done animated movie in a month or so with The Princess and The Frog. Hopefully, this can be the start of a trend.

I prefer the hand drawn movies over the 3D ones. The effects are really nice, with the hair and scenery in the backgrounds for those movies, but the hand drawn ones seem to have more character. Also, most of the 3D movies like Over the Hedge, Shrek, and Cars always have those "moral lessons" in them which make me want to puke. All the stories seem to be the same...

I wanna see it on the big screen SO BAD. (I've already seen it online) The artwork is so beautiful and full of life, I can't NOT see it in theaters.

But whenever I express to my friends that I want to see Ponyo they just go "of course you do. Oh you and your animu hurr hurr hurr watch a real movie for once" *grumble grumble grumble*

those are the kind of people i strap to a chair and force to watch one of miyazaki's movies (whichever would fit their tastes...princess mononoke is the most popular....haha). in any case, i call in minor favors when the going gets rough and guilt them into seeing it with me. they then love it and begrudgingly say so with an added, "but this doesn't mean i like anime!" (actually, yes it does. haha)

but enough of me torturing the people i love....

i wanna see this movie SO BAD. i'm SO sick of 3D crap (mostly the, er, crappy ones) and LOVE miyazaki. too bad i gotsa buy books.... *insert explosion*

I absolutely ADORED ponyo X3 Every two minutes, I was saying "Awww! That's/she's/he's/they're so damn CUTE <3 I really enjoyed it. I think the main thing I liked about it was that even though it was more of a children oriented film, the story isn't so kiddy and crazy (kinda like Totoro was, still loved that one though ^^) It's a simple, innocent love story and I thought it was beautifully done. I would recomend this movie to ANYONE who is a fan of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki ^^
