The SmackJeeves Military and Veterans Thread

Postby The_Hankerchief » March 27th, 2014, 12:01 am

With all of the current and former military here, I figured it might be a good idea to start an official military thread.

Are you a current member of the military, or a veteran? Or are you thinking of joining and want some advice? This thread is intended to be a forum for the servicemembers and veterans of SmackJeeves to get together, chill, swap war stories and give advice to the young folks looking to join. All branches of the military of any nation are welcome to post here. Think of it like a VFW chapter, with free membership, but you can't physically spill beer on each other.

Do keep in mind, while we welcome everyone, we do expect everyone to remain respectful. Playful ribbing is one thing, being a douche is another, and discrimination against branch or nationality will not be tolerated. If it gets out of hand, we'll get the mods involved. (Yes, even you, U.S. Marines. ;) )

To get the ball rolling, I'll introduce myself. My name's Brennen Hankins, but folks call me Hank. I'm an Airman 1st Class in the U.S. Air Force, and I'm an electrician (Civil Engineer), currently stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska. Nice to meet you all!

Hey now, Don't act so big Mister "we-can-do-push-ups-from-the-knees" now, okay?

Joking aside...

I am Airman Apprentice Evans, Kaelan B of the US Navy. I am an Aviation Electronics Technician, Intermediate level. I am currently stationed in Oceana, Virginia beach, but currently at Norfolk for 2M training. (Solder tech). I fully support this thread and willing to help anyone out there considering joining the military!

How's everyone else doing?

Don't you miss the good old days when we rode bikes for PT?

....Wait a minute, that was an Air Force thing. As you were, my bad.

Never served, never had any desire to serve, however I did play Private Harris in an independent film about WWI trench warfare. We spent close to 10 hours a day in -10 degree overnight temperatures filming this movie, and it's still never been released. While I don't consider myself a veteran, I soldiered through that shit like a pro.

Never been in the forces, and never likely to be, but I fancy saying a quick RIP to the Territorial Army (TA). They've been re-branded as the Army Reserves, in a pretty transparent attempt to legitimize sending them out to foreign wars, so the spirit of the TA has essentially been formally dissolved.

My parents met in the TA, so without it I would never have been born. That makes me feel a little sad that it's gone now.

As of today, I am sworn in as an enlisted member of the United States Air Force. I didn't want to make a big deal out of it until I knew for sure that I'd be able to get in, but today's physical confirmed it.

Don't know which job I'll be going in as, I've still got two extra tests to take to broaden my options (DLAB for linguistics and EDPT for computer programming), but I've got good prospects.

High five! Awesome! Just, whatever you do, try not to get stuck in Open General. That's always a crap shoot, you may get a good job, most OG folks I met have got crap jobs. If you can get into something you can use when you get out, all the better.

Congratulations again!

Hey good job there! Make sure you have a job picked before you go to boot. I may not know much about the Air Force, but I do know that going in jobless sucks big time. Again congrats, you will not regret this decision.

Waiting sucks. I want so much to move forward with my life, but I can't do jack until a job opening comes up. The specific job I want only accepts ~50 people a year, but at the same time, it's entirely possible that I'm the only person out of this MEPS branch to qualify this year, so basically I have no idea how long I'll be waiting. My hope is no later than October, when the fiscal year resets, and all of that year's positions become available.

There's a saying in the Air Force about "Hurry up and wait". You are learning this. There will be lots more. Just have to ghost rude the whip and wait it out. In the meantime, take advantage of the wait time and get ready for basic. There will be lots of running and marching, so cardio would be good to get down first, followed by push ups and sit ups. The key to getting in shape is to keep your body guessing, so switch up exercises every now and then.

That's a military quote all together :P

And like what Hankercheif said, cardio, pushups, sit ups, leg excersises, all will be something you need to prep for. You will be dropped at some point, and your drill sergeant will fuck with you. Probably one of the cruelest things that happened to my division is we have to do synchronized pushups to a slow music box melody, and whenever we were in deep trouble, they'd play Night on Bald mountain over the loud speakers. But how you experience boot will entirely depend on you, and everyone else in your division(?).

Have a box of stuff that you can designate as your "mail to me as soon as I'm out of boot" box. I'm talking cell phone, books, photos, and especially civilian clothing. This is for when you move into your first set of barracks , you'll really want to get out of uniform as soon as you can, or have something to do in your spare time, and if you don't have any civies to wear or books to keep you occupied, well sucks to suck. Phone will be especially important, I'm pretty sure your whole family would love to hear from you when you're done.

In the mean time I hope you pick up that job opening soon, sounds like it's quite the specialized job if they only recruit 50 people at a time for it.

Just found out that the three half-siblings I've never met are respectively in the Navy, joining the Army, and enrolling in the Air Force academy. Amusing.
