What do you do in the background while drawing?

Postby akemikae » November 11th, 2016, 10:08 pm

I usually just listen to music while I draw, but I find it can get draining after a while, cause you start to zone it out. Haha. I'm not good at watching tv in the background, unless I've seen the show a million times, cause I get extremely distracted. I'm totally down for listening to podcasts, but I am having the hardest time finding any that interest me, so if you know of any, list them!

I've been drawing nonstop recently, and I really just need some variety of things to do in t he background, so I don't get so restless. Help me, I'm out of ideas.

on occasion i too listen to music, but i also just have a fan constantly going so id imagine that that is a pretty good background noise for me! Of course, similarly, it's the noise that helps me sleep at night too, so its not something to do while trying to draw late at night in my experience xD

One thing I do tht actually helps me on occasion is to distract myself just a little bit form drawing, not enough that I procrastinate and get nothing done, but enough that I don't get tired/worn out from drawing so quickly. Like, I check social media for a quick sec, or re-read what I have of my comic to keep myself motivated to draw it, But I'm also known for being a good multitasker so it may not work out for you lol

I haven't really tried podcasts myself - I actually DO admit that I can't focus on things when I can hear actual words. It's one reason I stick to instrumental songs or songs in foreign languages (such as japanese, ect) when I draw and listen to msuic, so I don't distract myself from my comic/drawing flow. Somehow, when I can recognize words in a song, I start focusing on the lyrics instead of what I'm drawing ;v;

Still, I hope you find something to work out for you! I know what you're feeling entirely haha

Livestream drawing is my favorite thing because it's super motivating! Sometimes I'll watch timelapse drawings as well, but I mostly listen to video game and anime music.

I've actually been trying to live stream for the past few days, but I'm having a hard time with my computer. Haha, the broadcasting software runs and follows my screen till I actually start to stream, then it stays stuck on the spot it started and doesn't move. :C I hope I get it to work eventually. Haha.

I listen to music but what kind of music I listen to depends on how focused I need to be. I usually listen to stuff on my iPod that I'm familiar with and whistle along while I'm drawing to the chagrin of people who live in my house. Sometimes I need to mix it up though and I'll put Pandora on. That's usually if I'm inking or something like that.

I can't watch anything while I'm working, though I have put a movie on in the background if I've seen it a million times... I just feel like it divides my attention too much.

I also need to be completely alone in the room in order to feel comfortable drawing. If someone else is with me, even if they're doing their own separate thing and not interacting with me, I just can't get properly immersed in the work.

:? here the same.

When I hear music during my inking session it should be instrumental.
Or in a language I can't understand easily. Most English vocals in Metal songs fulfill this demand.
In pencil stage (thumbnailing) I can hear even German metal or German medieval rock...

I've always had this problem. If people are around, I tend to feel obligated to talk to them, or constantly stop doing what I'm doing to notice them for a second. I have one friend in specific that I'm good with, but that's because I've known her for ten years, and we usually draw together. So we bump off of each other a lot.

Me too. I make so many mistakes that ordinarily I can usually catch easily. :\ If someone is behind me, it's even worse. I can't deal with the thought that someone might look over my shoulder, even if I know they most likely don't care.

I usually put on some high-energy music or a playlist of ballads. Something with a lot of feeling in it helps. Or a movie or TV show I'm familiar with so it doesn't grab my attention too much but I can hear something familiar.

Um, I put wrestling on in the background. Yeah. Or sometimes I'll just listen to people's intro music. Mustache Mountain has a deliciously 70s theme. That's mostly for coloring. Inks I do at work between calls so there's mostly office white noise going on.

Music, or a movie. Sometimes I'll brew tea and drink beer while I do it. Other times, I have to get out of the house, which, these days, usually means heading to either the Crooked Tree Coffee Shop near my house, a seedy diner somewhere, or driving out to the woods, either in the Sun River Canyon or the Belt Creek Wilderness. If I go out to the woods, I always build a campfire before I start drawing, just because I like listening to the crackle.

Just reading this post sounds like a feel good TV commercial for something like an apple-pie or a good whisky.

Music, just like everyone else. music has always been the one thing to help me focus no matter what I'm doing. When I work out I like to really pump up with something hard, like rap, punk or metal, when I'm driving I like upbeat fun funky music to keep me in a good mood, and when I;m drawing I actually like music that fades into the BG for me, like noise or vaporwave.

I can't write or pencil is I have anything on, even music! I'm jealous of those who can, it can get boring. But then when I'm inking or colouring I'll usually have podcasts or comedy albums on.

I have no idea if we have the same tastes but my go-to podcasts are Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, Answer Me This, The Guilty Feminist (I'm British... can you tell?), 99% Invisible, Serial and WTF.

I can't have any sounds on when I'm sketching (at least when it comes to main parts of the sketch, overall composition, poses, expressions).

When I'm inking I prefer audio books, podcasts and radio shows (BBC R4 <3), something with a narrative.

When I'm colouring I alternate between something with a narrative, music and no background sounds, depending on the complexity of whatever I'm doing (new scene? second page of a scene so I know the palette already? etc).

I SOMETIMES watch something in background when inking/colouring (assuming it's traditional) but whenever I'm doing it I know it's slowing me down, it's just something I allow myself every now and then. :?

Complete silence when I do rough & final sketches, Lets Play playlists or reposts of previous livestreams for lineart & shading. I prefer idle chatter in my ears when I'm doing the more labouring parts of the pages, It helps me focus and since I don't really hear anything while I'm doing it anyway audiobooks would be a waste, and listening to livestreams or lets plays rather than music etc helps me pace myself so I don't just work on a page for like six hours straight, since my rheumatism does not enjoy that, not one bit.

Edit//

Sometimes I have some of my card game jrpgs (I know, what is wrong with me) open on my phone doing automated grinding and I just listen to the HYAAH HEEEH grunts and the 8-second music loop LOL. No wonder I have mental health issues......
