Geode Corner: a very hilarious romance

Postby blackmoongirl2424 » January 13th, 2010, 11:53 pm

I'm going to break down my review into 5 basic points: 1) My first impressions 2) The Plot 3) The Narrative (the style and technique used to communicate that story) 4) the Characters and 5) the Art.

Disclaimer: I am not and do not claim to be an authority on webcomics. My opinions are just opinions, are completely subjective based on my personal likes and dislikes. I offer this and all reviews as creative criticisms and constructive feedback, not personal attacks, and are voiced with the utmost respect for the artists and authors, whom I regard as my peers.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
If anyone knows me I’m that hopeless romantic that loves the aww moments when the guy gets the girl and vice versa. That and I love to laugh and action is fun too so being something I may fancy.

“When sarcastic but charitable Amber Pennicastle follows a handsome panhandler to his secret hideaway, her life turns upside-down in this action-shoujo comedy.”

I like the little discription not anything that gives something away about the storyline and not something that’s like “meh…moving on…” But the only thing that I think should be taken out is “sarcastic” since I think her personality will[/should] be shown as we read the series but it’s not a huge deal if it’s there. The Cover page is colorful and makes me think ”…is one of them a weather person” IDK but that’s how it looks like to me XDD;;

PLOT
Amber, 21 years old with the dream of becoming the weather girl(suprise suprise) you see on TV all the time has a pretty “exciting” life while she juggles three jobs: As a (paint) tattoo person [where she gets constantly harassed by some perv], An Ice Cream job with a nagging boss, ….and the third Job…I’m not entirely sure…I honestly want to say helping out/feeding the homeless since really only two jobs are mentioned/seen. [ANYWAYS] While doing her usual run giving the homeless sandwiches she gives her last one to her little crush, which would be described as that really cute homeless guy whom calls her by the name “Socks.” He thanks her and she leaves like normally until she hit a cat with her car and nearly got mugged. The man (her crush) saves her and tells her to leave as he gets into a big fight with the muggers. She does. Coming back to reward her hero she ends up following him into this theatre where she finds out…He’s a con-man. Scared off by one of his friends/house mates/ect she leaves her bag which had the reward. And her diary. Silas(the homeless guy/her crush) discovers this and uses her passages to return the favour. Although untrusting of Silas now that Amber knows who he is, she still can’t help to fall for the guy.

NARRATIVE

Third Person. Mainly through Amber’s point of view but you’ll get the little con-artist there too.

CHARACTERS

Amber: She is our main leading girl. Although in the profile she is said to be sarcastic I didn’t really see any true sarcasm portrayed in the series (and I really didn’t understand what it meant when she likes sarcasm…0_o; ). She’s a very kind woman who goes out of her way to feed those less fortunate. Amber loves and we mean loves storms and she tends to search for thunder and lighting if one’s predicted to hit her part of town. I like her. She’s not that mary sueish character that most people hate with shojos/graphic novels/ect she’s over all down to earth. And not a teenager~ No. She’s not.

Silas: Silas is our guy. And no he’s not that doe-eyed “cute” guy. He’s a man. >8D Silas is a con-man how long he’s been doing it who knows. But he’s good at it. He has that personality of the guy that likes to joke around, is pretty carefree, and can be a sweetie at times (…if their not ruined by killer rides). He also has feelings for Amber and attempts to show them sometimes in the right ways…sometimes not. He has to be one of my faves so far since he’s just that funny guy. XDD; Amber:” ….I thought you were afraid of hights….” Silas: “….oh…yeah….o_o; *falls* AAAAAHHHHH!!!” (epic.)

Nick: Don’t be fooled by his tough guy and [evil] humour. The guy doesn’t wear a cross just for the “blingage” (do kids say that now a days???) he’s apparently a very devoted and conservative Christian and is protective of his con-man+ one girl team.

Charlene: She is Amber’s best friend who tends to [quietly] back sass their leader of Sizzle Swirl.

Diana: The animal lover of the whole group. Diana is Amber’s roommate [and someone she’s known since childhood] who happens to collect exotic and many [very many] animals…much to Amber’s disliking. Diana suffers from social akwardness so she sees the little critters as an outlet.

Jenna: If you love naggy-get-back-to-work-you-lazy-bums bosses then you’re going to love Jenna.

Mark: He’s a creepy pervert. Nuff said.

Kristin: She is Silas’ sister who we meet later in the series. Something makes me think that she likes/is with Caruso…

Caruso: He is another member of the con-artist gang who is ready to fight and cuss someone out. He IS Sailor Mars! >BD Sorry Nick you can’t avoid being Mercury. >.>;

Raju: He’s with this [baddie/higher up] group. And he’s evil. How do I know? His favriote drink. Water. EVIL I TELL YOU! D8<

ART
The art varies sometimes from page to page. Sometimes outstanding (espially on colored pages) sometimes not. What I found a little frustrating was the constant change of the speech bubble style every page was different and tended disrupting the “flow” from page to page also sometimes the screen tones looked a bit wonky here and there. 0_o; Everything was very much page to page variation even the way Amber looked her eye style was not consistent one page she’d have normal cartoonish eyes the next is like “BWAH SHOJO!” eyes and so forth. She was the only character to have that issue so it’s not like every character had 20 variations of eyes (I’m not talking about expression wise but regular plain eyes). The art is drawn animeish-cartoonish its not animeish to the point where one could call it flat out Manga/Anime. I feel it has a good measure of a sort of cartoony feel to it that I like about the style. Her peoples are very proportional and yes her men look like men and her girls aren’t ½ -eye-filling-face with shojo bubbles in every page and when done right her screen tones suit nicely with her beautify drawn backgrounds *jealous*. My fav was looking at the colored pages they are very nicely done without being over done. XD

OTHER OBSERVATIONS, SUGGESTIONS & SUMMERY

This is a good series. I’ll tell you straight up its in my faves list (you can check if you don’t believe me) and I’m not just saying that to be nice or because I’m all for a good laugh (and hilarious Sailor Moon referencing) and cute little romances. It was not something that was cliché if it is shoot then Geode Corner makes it very unnoticeable for someone who can easily see what’s going on. There are no high school kids (well maybe just Amber’s co-workers over at SS) to angst about their life. The story felt pretty natural and the relationship builds instead of jumping into the deep end. The characters aren’t much of mary sues and have there own little thing going on for each of them so there not just there just to be there.
Things to consider:

-IDR if you fixed this but I noticed this in your earlier pages use multiply for your screentones/color on top of your inked pages it’ll look a lot nicer and it won’t mess with the original. Trust me I had this issue with my stuffs since I was a traditional (crappy) inker.

-As I was reading I found those “Ads” for other Webcomics distracting and may also make your reader veer off somewhere else when they should be looking at the page (which I ended up doing in the middle of reading). I recommend that you place any “ads” in your author comments since people will look at it and still get a page out of it.

-Pick your preferred speech bubble (this is a must)

-Same for Amber’s eyes its fine to prefer one style over another as your work progresses but it always seems to switch out every page
….So…um other than that you’re pretty good. XDDD This was a great find I’ll be looking forward to more. >D

Thank you soo much for the review! I'm glad you liked the characters and the story. I agree with most of your points!

The balloon comments and toning help! I am going to try to use one type of pen size for all balloons (unless it a scene where I need a smaller or larger balloon for dramatic effect). Sometimes I even used photoshop which was probably pretty annoying and noticeable from the inked balloons XD! I need to put in more consideration to every part of the comic, especially ones I tend to forget about!
I certainly agree with you on this aspect, and Im glad you brought it up!

I only do the ads/random pics in between volumes because I do a 2-3 week hiatus after a volume's conclusion, and I still want to update with some filler stuff in the meantime : ), but I probably will include a page or author comment that directs readers to skip the ads if they want, and Im glad you brought this up. (In fact, I will do an ad for yours if you want-as long as it is not hentai) for taking on such a long project!))

:D Thanks again!

Also, I said I'd make (G-pg) fanart for anyone who reviewed my metaphoric comic brick, so feel free to message me with any particular requests.

Yeah little breaks are fine between works (I'm starting to do 'em after every 5 chapters since pretty much that's what I do all the time so yeah artist/authors need their breaks) in a way I'd recomend it for really anyone since it clears your head of the stress and it gives you time to think about/draw/write something else for fun and so you won't end up bored or tired of drawing the same thing. Another thing I also forgot to point out: The "back cover"(since you would see it on the back of a book) for Volume 2 seemed unnessary in the way of it's telling us whats going to go on in the next few chapters. Its ok for a book but I didn't think it fit and gave away things that should be/are expressed in Volume 2 0_o;

no henti/porno for me >.>;; Its akward for me to think about and I bet it'd be humilating for someone else to draw it for another...(unless they're also into it) o___o; I'm a person of suprises only thing I'm saying so you're not like "UGH! WHAT DO I DO?!": anything from AL. I'm a pretty (G-PG-13 [since theres alot of....*cough* language...])person so yeah feel free to draw whatever you want. 0w0;

Bah, it wasn't sooo long (at least I didn't feel like it was) and besides I found a new series >D;
