Very good question! I'd be curious about this as well.

We'll get back to you on that one.

Comics must have 30 pages by the end of the nomination period.

The Awards team will check each comic after nominations have closed to make sure they all meet this criteria. Comics with less than 30 pages by the time this evaluation is performed will be discounted from further participation.

Hopefully this will encourage some possible nominees who may have fallen into a creative slump to crank out enough pages to meet the requirement! :P

For further clarification: Completed comics that are less than 30 pages may still be eligible, but questionable cases will be evaluated at the discretion of the Awards team.

One more rule on completed comics is that they must have been completed (in other words, last updated) within the past year, 2012. The awards are 2012-2013 after all!

Ahh gotcha. So I guess if a comic that has say 25-30 pages by the end of the nomination period but has a good track record/promise of updates is still elligable. That seems fair.

When a comic is nominated, do they only need ONE user nomination to qualify or is there a minimum?
Example: Lets say one comic's fans wants to nominate a comic.
Perhaps there should be a minimum of say, 3? just so they aren't nudging their secret ninja friend for it. Or maybe that's a bit too strenuous.

Good question! I think right now we're going to do it without a number of nomination requirements. The really great comic that only gets one nomination deserves the same chance as the mostly good but excessively popular comic that gets seventeen nominations, I think. I feel like asking for a certain number of nominations in order for a comic to be eligible turns the process into a popularity contest, which is something we definitely want to avoid since it's something that people have been rightly concerned about in the past.

Ps- Oi! Awards team! If you have any last minute issues please get your butts to the separate (non-SJ) forum and get posting because it's getting to crunch time now before nominations begin on Thursday :) I posted something and I'd like to have at least one person's nod of approval that it's good.

The rest of y'all may carry on your normal business and get out your nominating gloves! :D

Are the comics that can not be voted for again this year being listed? I mean like the ones that won the prevues year (or years?). I was assuming they were in the spoiler but those are just names? and for the names, it would be nice if we could click on the names to see what there comics are.

There isn't a list of previous winners, and the only list that's there is of the judges whose comics can't be nominated.

I hope they'll add a list to each category :<

Same here. It would help with making my nom nom nominations.

Also, did they take out some categories? I remember ones like Most Improved, Best Characters, etc. Ah well, still looks like this will be a lot of fun. :)

Those will still be there, just in a different way. Basically now every comic who makes it to voting is eligible for those categories, although they have been simplified down into 5 (most improved, great artwork, great writing, great web design, and great characters).

More details on that when it gets closer to voting time.

Ah thanks I was wondering about those too. I was assuming they were gone to make it more about the comic types. Those categories are fun! XD

Winners from previous years can be nominated this year, simply because there will have been a year's gap, probably two by the time winners are announced, since they won. That being said though do try and nominate comics that haven't won as well. Remember you can nominate up to three comics for each category!
The Smackies are about helping showcase all the different artists that are on SmackJeeves, and spreading some amazing new comics to readers that they may not have found otherwise.

I see some people actually nominating comics that aren't even hosted on SJ or have "dead" mirrors on SJ- do the dead mirrors still qualify? (Their SJ mirror has not updated in 6+ months but their "actual" site still updates).

EDIT: Also I thought the cooldown time was three years? A change in rules isn't bad or anything, but consistency I guess?
