Wait, if my comic got nominated and I can't skip rounds does that mean that I can't vote in my genre at all? Because I really don't feel like rating my own comic.

You could actually just choose to avoid that genre for that vote if you really don't want to. If you vote for yourself, it's completely anonymous. If you really don't feel comfortable voting then just don't vote for that category.

So to answer your question, yeah, pretty much.

You could place it last and give it no kudos.

Bit confused by this setup, a few of the comics I wanted to vote for don't appear to be there, and I didn't even know nominations were opened or even got closed and tallied up. There was no news article posted on the main site, no information handed out to the readers, so I missed it completely.

Is there a table of which comics got how many nominations?

Are those 15 nominations for the entire category which will be chopped down until a winner emerges or is it 15 this week and another 15 next week?

All announcements about nominations being opened and closed were made here on the forums, and all took place back in November and December. I thought we did a decent job of keeping people aware of that while it was happening, but even though we tried to use outside social media, it was difficult to reach out to people who don't visit the forums often and stay on the "site" side. I apologize that we weren't thorough enough to reach you :( We really tried to cover all of our bases here, but it seems we must have fucked up somehow.

Some comics that were nominated didn't make it into the final 15 for their category, because many categories received far more than 15 nominations. The number of people nominating a comic didn't necessarily determine whether that comic went on to be in the finalists. The reason being that some comics received many nominations simply based on their existing popularity and readership, and we wanted there to be more opportunities for other webcomics that didn't necessarily have a lot of readers that would have nominated them.

We limited each category to 15 finalists because we felt that was a fair number to represent a vast array of comics without giving so many options as to be overwhelming to voters.

Each category has 15 final nominees total.

Yeah, just checked and I did nominate three comics, just couldn't recall. Since then had two different comics I wanted to vote on instead of the two I nominated (one I wasn't even reading at the time), just got mixed up I guess. *Finds dunce hat to wear*

Even then, doesn't seem to have been that many votes in a few categories. Not sure about the overwhelmed with choices sentiment though. I personally wouldn't have felt overwhelmed with the choices but I guess other people might've.

Some of the categories did get less than 15- off the top of my head, yuri, autobiographical, and short story had less than 15 total nominations. Fantasy, Yaoi, and Comedy had the most to be narrowed down. For instance Yaoi, if I recall correctly, had 42 total eligible nominated comics. That can be a lot to read through and remember critically, even for a devoted yaoi fan, I think :P

Because we wanted to cut down on the "existing popularity giving an advantage" factor, that's why the ranking came to be the way it is. Too often in years prior people were able to come in and just throw in a vote for the name they recognize, which isn't a tragedy or anything, but we wanted to give more visibility to lesser known comics, kind of keeping everyone- regardless of starting popularity or pagecount- in the same league, you know?

Because we made so many changes to that, we felt we needed to keep a cap on the number of finalists. I know the most recent awards prior to this only had (I think) 6 finalists per category, so IMO we're being comparatively inclusive compared to that.

All props go to Miss Falconer for devising, coding, and working the kinks out of this system.

Also, should anyone else decide to attempt it, the system will not work on mobile phones (at least Androids). I know, I tried. Sothose without regular internet access on their computers are going to have to find it. Thought I'd post as a courtesy.

dang, i really like this format! it really is way less a popularity contest and way more a chance to check out some new comics. can i give kudos to SJ for subverting the usual pitfalls of webcomics awards?

i also made a short comic about zombies.

ooohhh It honestly never even crossed my mind that mobile-friendly was something people may want/need. OOPS. Except I don't know anything about programming for phones anyway, sorry! ^^;

Also could I make a small suggestion?
The voting system is looking great, and the three-round thing gives people a chance to focus on any 5 comics at a time in a category. However, is there a way you can incorporate thumbnails or just reference by name of the comics that would be in the next round of voting after the first 5 comics have been voted for? Yknow, just so that the interface would be more foolproof to people who are more clueless about all of this.

You know what? You've done good enough. It's amazing we have this system in the first place, we don't need that extra shit. I tried it on a whim. Go to any McDONALD'S, theyll have free wifi. It's all good, dont worry about it. You've done good already.

Yeah I'm trying to vote for the comics, but for some reason the banners are just showing up as advertisements and I cannot see what comics have been nominated. I was just wondering if other people were experiencing that same problems.

Also the Drag and Drop doesn't work due to the banners getting replaced with advertisements.

I added some text at the bottom that lists the next round. Is that what you meant??

uhhhh not sure how that's possible since I haven't programmed any advertisements into the website at all, anywhere. PM me with a screencap?
