Ad Troubles

Postby Admin » October 4th, 2009, 2:24 pm

Hi Everyone,

I recently received several reports of virus-like advertisements being served on the site. I've traced what I believe to be the source of the ads, and I've halted the ad source that was serving the malicious ads. So, the ads should no longer be appearing; if you continue to see any, please report them with as much detail as possible.

Also, for clarification, the ads weren't an actual virus - they redirected to a fake "ad scanner" website which falsely reported that your computer had a virus and tried to trick you into purchasing their software.

Sorry about the hassle everyone, we'll do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Oh phew. For a second, I went to my profile and it came up. I thought I had a virus that was directing me toward that site. It was gone within a few minutes though, that must've been you. Nice work Admin!

Thank you. I had two try to get me yesterday. Luckily, Avast! caught it both times, but I was worried one might get through eventually. Some of them will load on your computer if you try to leave the window or indicate you're not interested in downloading it.

I got that a few times. =/ It was really frustrating. Glad that it's gone, though.

I thought I had picked that up from MangaFox! Does it only show up if you're on Smackjeeves? I was worried it had loaded something on the computer i'm using.

I can still see the ads, and they're all of the "get buff really fast" variety.
There is a happy place in everyone's head. Just make sure not to stay there for too long... Or not.

Thank god! I clicked something and it popped up. I was really scared and the worst was when it said "Download?" In some box where there was no close and you HAD to click OK. D:

Just for the record, if you're seeing annoying advertising on SJ (and other sites) it might be the result of malware downloaded some time back. There are programs which will piggy-back onto your browser and serve you advertising that *seems* like it's originating from the website you're viewing, but is in fact being downloaded separately.

If you're having these problems, I'd suggest you first try Spybot S&D, followed by AdAware (both of which are free and reliable). These will usually eliminate this kind of advertising.
