Smack Jeeves Group Photo

Hey Everyone!

For the last few months I've been secretly working on redesigning Smack Jeeves. That means a new front page!

Something I'd like to put on the front page is a "group shot" of characters from Smack Jeeves comics. Something kinda like this:

Image

What do you say? Do you want to be a part of the Smack Jeeves Group Photo?

Join In
If you'd like to contribute one of your characters to this group shot, please post your character here as a transparent PNG in high-resolution, doing some kind of pose. Your character could have it's arm around someone, giving someone bunny-ears, perhaps holding a drawing utensil, simply smiling, or otherwise generally having a fun time. If you want to do more than one character and have them interact, that's cool too. Collaborate with others, if you'd like!

Understand that by contributing your character to our group shot, you're giving Smack Jeeves permission to use your character in the likeness you submit in the group shot on the Smack Jeeves home page.

As we get more characters, we'll arrange the group photo together! Have fun!

Is it possible to be rejected if your artwork isn't up to par? Is there a deadline?

Sounds really cool! What are the ground rules for this? How will you handle the, er, curation of who/what may be in this image? Some kind of vote or nomination system? I acknowledge that my art should not be the face of SJ, but the site is brimming with thousands enthusiastic young artists who haven't quiite gotten there yet. Might this portrait be updated as comics come and go?

Sorry if I sound mean but you can't fit 36,544 OCs in one portrait : [

Well, yes. Furthermore, all existing copyrighted characters not created by you yourself (i.e. fan art) are ineligible.

Submissions should have clean lines and generally be your best work.

Roughly mid-October.

Ultimately, I'll be deciding what makes it into the final cut, but I'm hoping to see some collaboration in the community in the arrangement of the group photo.

That's quite possible, yes.

So, the only requirement is that they have to be original (i.e. made by the submittee) characters from a comic hosted on Smack Jeeves. Any other criteria that we need to consider?

Does the art have to be in colour, or is B&W allowed? B&W would represent some comics/characters much better, but might feel inconsistent with coloured art. On the other hand, huzzah more variety, if it's done well.

Also, I assume characters should look interesting? I don't imagine my boring characters would be very attractive on the homepage xP

Color is preferred, but if your characters only exist as B&W entities, then go with B&W.

I'm not sure what you mean by "interesting" since "interesting" is pretty subjective. In comedy, every weirdo needs a straight man. Consider that.

Would fan characters be allowed? Like characters based off of existing IP but that are clearly different? (My current avatar would be a good example of what I'm talking about)

And also, would sprite characters be allowed if they're original?

Mostly just asking to get more info.

I would also like to know if sprite characters are allowed!

My comic is sprite-driven, but all my characters I drew myself.

Existing copyrighted characters which you don't own the rights to are banned in any form, i.e. a blue Kirby wearing a baseball cap is still a Kirby which is copyright Nintendo I'm guessing.

Original sprite artwork will be accepted if it is detailed and high-quality.

This actually sounds really rad! I'd love to join in!

What kind of dimensions/size should we aim for?

This is a really cool idea, and could be something expanded on each year kind of like how Secret Santa is run. Could really add some extra flavor to the community! Or would it be considered "Flava"?

Just high enough to be able to be resized down. 1800px tall or wide should be good.

I have too many comics with different main characters, but I do have this squirrel mascot guy. Is a mascot who technically doesn't appear in any comic aside from a cameo acceptable?
