I dont think its wrong for someone to try and convince there fan base to vote for them, or any other nasty things that come with voting. Its just like when politics run against eachother and they start playing those dirty commercials explaining why the other guy sucks and why you should instead vote for them. I mean, if your really dedicated and your fanbase is vary dedicated then you gotta prove it. Let all hell break loose, it'll make this so much funner.
(oh and its definitely not a popularity contest because i see some comics [includingmine] that are winning against comics that have double/triple/quadruple the number of fans they do. Its really about how dedicated your fans are and how close you are with them, so even if you have like 500 fans, if you never gonna go out of your way to talk to them or be friendly, then there not gonna go out of there way for you.)

Should i comment...? Yes i should comment. No there's nothing wrong with saying "Vote for me if you like my comic!"
But not everyone reads the news, i know alot of people avoid the forums altogether or go straight to their comic/faves without looking at the main site at all.
This is like a contest that basically everyone who knew about it on the forums is throwing while including participants who have no idea at all that they're involved anyway. hence, its what you would call a rigged "blind race" and gives an unfair advantage and an inaccurate gauge of a comic's standing.
Not to be a stickler, but that leaves a terrible taste in the mouth of something the website in its entirety is hosting.
And its not much fun if you play dirty and if all hell broke loose then this is an insult to the hardworkers who brought this competition together and organized it.
Think about it. How did some of the popular comics get up there? They were NOMINATED. by FANS. and by process of elimination from JUDGES they were skimmed down to the so called "top of the top" So of course some authors have no idea whats going on when the nominations pretty much hit a SILENT period for months. Many probably though the awards weren't gonna happen at all and forgot about it. They don't know. Is this fair? Hardly, from what it looked like, this all seemed very unofficial in the long run.

If the nominees were ALL notified and gave proper time to respond and promote themselves, then i'm sorry to say but it would end up much like any other popularity contest save for a few lucky ones. But thats just how it is and it would be an accurate count as a whole. I'm just happy that great comics are being shown to people that they normally only get a few seconds/minutes on the "just updated" page if they're lucky.

So far it seems like you're just playing monopoly and "winning" against a blindfolded player.

The only way for this competition to be accurate is if a group of judges tallied each comic by score of premise: i.e: effort, presentation, length, frequency of update, improvement, response from fans, how closely they deserve to be in such category etc. From the beginning to end.
But that doesn't seem to be the case for this final round. Now if it was Poll AND Judge tally it'll be less of a popularity contest and MORE of an accurate awards ceremony.

we actually discussed notifying the nominees in the very beginning but forgot about it. so yeah, that was an oversight on our part. if h0ly doesn't have time to do it, i will, or we could split it down the middle or something. since it's still early in july, there would be plenty of time for all authors to notify their fans.
so far it seems some of the lesser-known comics are leading in the polls, or at least getting VOTES, and i hope that people are reading all the comics instead of just voting for their favorites. i'm also really happy to see that people are having a hard time deciding who to vote for.
but yeah, we are keeping track of the things that we missed or the things that went wrong or could use improvement, so that whoever organizes it next year can fix them immediately. consider this a test run. it was impossible for everything to go right the first time.
we all, especially tezzle, worked hard on setting this up, and as long as people are discovering new comics, and the underdogs are getting some exposure, and people are enjoying the awards, then it's a success to me, at least.

I think it's a great idea. Notified or not, a lot of obscure comics are going to be read this month. I've already found a few that I might enjoy regularly.
Thanks for setting this up guys :)

p.s. don't vote for me based on the screenshot that got picked for my comic. that pic SUCKS

I dont think the contest is unfair as your making it out to be, and if ppl who dont come on the forums are less informed about whats happening in the community then thats there problem. They should pay attention more. And this isnt something that just happened for the forum users, like my friend fluffy (author of purple) NEVER goes on the forum and didnt know about the voting and didnt even know he was nominated but he was (and is winning) so i think that shows something. Like you dont have to be on the forum to be winning. The people who are winning are winning based on an informed dedicated fan base.
And i know allot of authors had no clue about any of this and arent catching on but hell, its on the front page now. What else do they need to get there attention? We could individually send PMs but that would take long and if there not keeping up with things thats happening to there own comics then there not paying attention enough. Im sure one of there fans must have mentioned it by now, so the only way an author could have NOT known about any of this is if they never go on the forums and never look at the front page and never read any of the comments the fans leave them and in that case there sort of an asshole and dont deserve to be informed anyway.

All of your suggestions near the end should have been suggested a long time ago to the committee in charge of this or w/e. Its a little to late now to throw suggestions out there about how this should have been done. I think at this point we just gotta be content with how this was done and be happy that anything at all was done as a community hole for smackjeeves. Like theres not allot of things that happen for the hole community so i appreciate this (hoping it pulls us together more)

@mosama: Just because they're not a Forum active participant doesn't make them any LESS of a Smackjeeves Member. From what it sounds it comes off as your moaning because you think this may tip against your favor. And how is it Fair for the FINALISTS to NOT get informed atleast this much? It would be unreasonable to contact all the Nominees because that's way too much trouble, but now that the numbers have been shaven down to the good 5-6 finalists per category, its not unpheasable especially since many of the comics are in more than one catgeory. they even said they forgot, so it was just mismanagement on their part.

And i'm sorry if my suggestions are a bit late, the choosing of the judges/mods for this event was pretty anonymous and not really up for open positions really so your attacks against me are kind of not helping. And as an organized event contacting finalists seems kind of important.

I think it's going well for it's first run, it's gonna improve next year anyway, and really the great thing as a whole is all the comics out there being discovered.

I'll just quickly point out my suggestions for the next running:

I think the absolute best possible solution to this would be to for Admin to notify all SJ members about this event via mail/newsletter beforehand.

Another thing which I'm not too sure if possible, is for the voting poll to not display the results right after voting?

Agreed, the results should not be accessible to voters, but only to the judging panel or Admin until the voting is over.

I just have a question. You have some of the strangest categories, like "best W.T.F." and "yaoiest yaoi", or even "best gag-a-day" or "best stick figure" but you don't have a category for "best religious" or anything similar to that. Is there any reason why? I mean, you stated under "best photography" that "one would think we might simply not have this category, but that defeats the purpose of why we have these awards."

Just curious.

There is no religious category most likely because there are so few religious comics around (and most of the ones around are nowhere near the quality of works in the other categories). Also, most of them fall in other categories (drama, romance, etc) anyway, so there is no dire need for a separate category. I'm sure that if the genre becomes more represented on SJ, a category could be made.
Busy, busy.
