Hard rock harmonica. Anybody knows?

Hard rock harmonica. Anybody knows?

Postby Jops » February 28th, 2012, 11:54 am

Hello! This is more of a help request than a discussion.

I'm looking for musical pieces that mix hard-rock tunes with classic harmonica blues.
Something like Electric Worry by Clutch, to give you an idea, do you know of any (that's not by Clutch, of course)?

Actually, i'm open to any hybrid music that includes the harmonica. So, it could be harmonica blues + reggae or metal or dubstep... whatever.
I just want something that has harmonica but it's not your classic good old blues.
Thanks.

Rock group. This is one of their better-known songs.

Blues Traveler- Run Around
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ousaiByU1ko

Rock group headed by guitarist Kerry Livgren, founder of Prog-rock group Kansas.
I could only find the live version of this one but if you want I can upload the studio
version.

Kerry Livgren and AD- New Age Blues (Despite the title is actually a rock song)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh0qf4HBwDs

I would describe this next one as folk music.

Charlie Peacock- Harvest Is The End of the World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgY17WUIML4

Harmonicatronica. Nathan McCree composed the soundtrack for the Tomb Raider games. This one
is an instrumental piece from his solo album, Console Sounds.

Nathan McCree- Travelling Without Moving

First and foremost, I'd recommend the group "Gangstagrass". Their music is best described as a bluegrass/rap hybrid, with hip-hop lyrics and beats matched to bluegrass music. (If you've ever seen the TV show Justified, these guys are the group that performed the theme song. I also happen to like this song here, among many others).

Secondly, while you wouldn't think it, Led Zeppelin has some good blues-y stuff. When The Levee Breaks and Bring It On Home are two notable examples. The Rolling Stones also had a few blues-themed singles (Dead Flowers comes to mind).

Bob Dylan may be a little too close to pure blues than you might like, but most of his songs feature a harmonica. Look him up on YouTube.

Finally, I recommend Bill Elm and Woody Jackson, ex-members of Friends of Dean Martinez. You might have heard their work before: these two were the guys behind the soundtrack to Red Dead Redemption (save for one song each by Jose Gonzalez, William Eliiot Whitmore, Jaime Lidell and Ashtar Command). Look them up, too.

Anyway, that should get you off to a nice start. Glad to see someone else who enjoys blues elements mixed in to their other music.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. Very happy witht he instrumental-only pieces you brought up, especially Travelling Without Moving... that was a true gem.

Oh yeah, Led Zeppelins are definitely in my playlist. I actually did mention in this thread that "When the Levee Breaks" will probably be referenced in my comic later on.

A true classic! Love his music. Also a musician that will be definitely referenced in my comic as he's Iris', one of my characters, all-time favourite.

Can't help it! I grew up listening to the Blues Brothers and i'm totally in love with the sound of the harmonica.

Thanks again to both of you. You've been truly helpful.
