Hey who likes old jazz

Hey who likes old jazz

Postby mitchellbravo » March 21st, 2012, 4:09 pm

I've been wondering whether or not I should post a link here, but why not. Mods feel free to move/delete if necessary.
I do a show called Vintage Hits featuring music from the 20's, 30's, and 40's. You can hear my horrible Jersey slur and drawl as I play music that sounds the way I wish my comic looked. I'll be on tonight from 6:00-8:00 EST. You can listen here by clicking the thing that says "Listen Live." You might have to download a doohickey but I don't remember. So that's that, hope you enjoy if you decide to partake.

I listen to some jazz, yes.

Like legit jazz. Though I keep taking a liking to "Dark Jazz" Which I didn't even know was a thing until my itunes said the whole Midnight Crew Album was.

Which I can see honestly.

Same here. I've never liked the "cool jazz" that wound up being what most people think of; I'm really glad electro-swing is going back to the old "jump blues" style. My first concert was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, cementing a life-long love of swing. Oh, and if you like the REALLY old stuff, you should check out http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/index.php--it's a site of digitized wax-cylinder recordings, including jazz from when it was spelled 'jass'.

Awww. I'm there every Wednesday until I graduate this May! :)

Durvin: Oh, sweet! I'll have to check that out. Some of the stuff I play is from the really early 20's, but I suspect some of the recordings might be a few drops earlier. The nice thing is that if you're a frumple like me and legally purchase all your music, you can get a shitton of songs off itunes for a pittance, because the songs are so old that there isn't much 'demand' for them

That's a fascinating period in terms of looking at music in general, I think. That's a little bit of why I find earlier things so interesting- it's cool to look at where those later musicians found their inspirations, and learning that some really innovative stuff happened earlier than you would expect. Plus you get a lot of linked collaborations from the older to the younger generations, and it's neat to see how old styles manifest in newer stuff.

Lol, newer, insofar as things that are half a century old are newer relative to stuff from the 20's.

It was cute, after I said those few lines, I heard everybody who was sitting out in the lounge area go "Awwww."

And thanks, I'll tell her! :)
