Ugh, the music by itself makes me cry. I was listening to it on a trip, and it was snowing, and...yeah. gone. Dx good thing i can stealth cry when i'm in a car with other people.

Into the West (Annie Lennox, ROTK credits) and Blue (Cowboy Bebop ending) are songs that I haven't listened to in so long, because I always skip them, because I know it will only end in tears. XP

The song that has most recently made me cry was Lazarus by Porcupine Tree. It doesn't normally have that effect, but it was just the wrong/right song at the wrong/right time. > >

I'm sure you will find plenty of Portal 2 fans. ^^

The Turret opera kind of made me misty-eyed. But mostly because it meant that such a great game was over. :(

Spoiler! :

The Graveyard Near The House, by The Airborne Toxic Event, is pretty much the only song that's caused some tears for me without an accompanying visual

Sorry if this is sort of bringing back an old thread, but this doesn't really fall under "saddest songs"

Lullaby for a Princess.

Full. Stop.

I was actually sobbing when I first listened to it.

Hirari, Hirari as well, but not to as much of an extreme.

Redwood Tree by Van Morrison. I used to hate the song, it's about a boy who loses his dog and he and his father go looking for it. They never find it, but they learn that they love each other while looking and bond and I don't know if its the associations with my own father or just the realization of gained maturity it required for me to appreciate the song years later, but man, i usually cannot handle it.

Sing Out by Cat Stevens makes me cry simply because of Harold and Maude.

Glad and Sorry by The Faces. A lot of personal family memories tied ito that one.

Something About Us by Daft Punk can get me misty-eyed from time to time.

Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls used to be a tough one. In recent years, I've come to find that the lyrics don't strike quite the same chord with me anymore, but the chorus of "I just want you to know who I am" still catches the heartstrings every now and then.

I also cried at the Turret Opera from Portal 2.

I think the number one winner has to be Somewhere Over the Rainbow, though.
Any version, but I think Iz' gets me the most.
That is just not a happy song to begin with. I'm not sure why it hits me so hard, but it always has, even when I watch Wizard of Oz.

Man am i a crybaby or what, i know im forgetting some too OTL

Mary, by Scissor Sisters. It was a song I'd never paid much attention to, was just a background song to me, but then I listened proper. Turns out it was written for his best friend, who died not long after.

"'Cause I'd give everything I can,
forget all the things that bring me joy,
if you could have one day pure and simple happiness.
Until that moment comes,
I'll be here where I've always been,
I'm gunna be your friend until the day I die."

That part gets to me in particular. Gets me a lil' teary just writing it... Funny the things that get to us.

A joke to dry your tears:
Spoiler! :
This could alternatively be called "The Country Music Thread".

Anyway, here's a sampler of some of mine:
Spoiler! :
-Jim Croce's "Operator", a song inspired by Jim's time in the army, overhearing other servicemen call their girlfriends and wives back home, only to find out they got left for someone new. I personally think the studio version has a bit more punch to it, but watch the emotion on Jim's face (on the right, with the epic mustache) in the live acoustic version as he plays. It almost looks like he's crying himself, though he's not.

-John Michael Montgomery's "Letters From Home". I can relate to this one. My dad was pretty ambivalent about my joining the service, and I didn't think he approved at first. However, he did say he was proud of me during a phone call while I was in tech school. It was the first time I've ever heard him say that. Given that he disapproved a lot of things about my growing up, things I did, how I did them, so on and so forth, it hit me pretty hard. Every time I hear that song, I think of that phone call.

He also had another one titled "The Little Girl". Those who aren't big into Christianity may not dig it, but I like it. Sad, but uplifting towards the end.

-Bobby Bare has a few that brought a tear to my eye, "500 Miles From Home", "Detroit City", and his covers of "Four Strong Winds" and "That's How I Got To Memphis". Of course, he also has a lot more cheerier songs to compensate for it, but I digress.

-Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Knocking On Heaven's Door". The former, because was played at a friend's funeral some time ago, the latter, well... How can you top that? It's beautiful, poetic, and just plain sad. I love that song to death, though.

-John Lennon's Imagine. Not sure why, but it always make me cry as a kid.

-Johnny Cash's "I Hung My Head" and "The Diplomat".

-And if Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash are good at writing sad songs, imagine what they did together:

-The Black Keys' "These Days".

-Timber Timbre's "Demon Host"

-Henson Cargill's "Skip A Rope". A good song to keep in mind when you have kids.

-Ddraigeneth brought up "Private Malone", by David Ball. It didn't me me cry, but it's a good one for this list.

--And, closing out the list, CCR's "Who'll Stop The Rain?".
