Fun Words or Turns of Phrase That Need More Attention

If you're like me, there are certain words that give you a bit of a thrill when you hear them. Often times these are way too seldom used in common conversation. We pick the phrases and terms up from books and stories, but people just don't indulge our fun.

What are some of the terms on your list?

Cumbersome - such an awesome word...and rarely do I hear anyone else use it!

Ilk - I'll admit this one is just begging to be used in bigoted controversy...but it's still a fun word...

Ire - I think I have this spelled right...spell check didn't even like it.

Irk/Irksome - Oh how I love this word. I throw it around whenever something gets on my nerves. You don't annoy me, you irk me!

Derelict - I came across this word in the "Cremation of Sam McGee." It's such an amazing word...far more fun than just abandoned.

Methinks - So Shakespearean! I actually love this word because of the old Rankin Bass Santa Claus is Coming To Town movie.

Those are some good words! I think I use some of them myself, haha. I'd like to add some including discombobulate, indubitably and askew.

I don't use discombobulate or indubitably in writing, but I say them all the time! Askew is more often written than said, but I love that word!

When writing fiction, not enough. If you get into writing about actual history though, surprisingly often!

Like when writing about the thirty years war. It always surprises me how often I see the word get thrown around as a purely quirky part of the language when there's a pretty good reason it exists

Defenestrate sounds so dramatic, and I love fisticuffs. its old fashioned but thats definitely part of the charm. some other words I like are impetuous, rapscallion, affable and iridescent.

Stachybotrys sounds silly and fun, however, it is actually deadly black mold. Reconnoiter, bungle, and buttress have also stuck in my head. I try to collect old-timey expressions in lieu of swears and have taken to saying "confound it!"

Some of my favorite obscure (and some what obscene) phrases...

"Ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag" - I'm pretty sure the actual saying means something different, but I sometimes use it as a Queens of the Stone Age reference for something really crappy (IE "Having Migranausea yesterday made me feel like ten pounds of shit in a five pound bag."
"Migrainausea"- Portamanteu of migraine and nausea, which I ooccasionally get.
"The devil beating his wife"- When it's raining but sunny at the same time
"Piss like a rushin' racehorse"- When you have to pee really bad.
"You couldn't hit a bear in the ass with a bass fiddle"- You have bad aim.

Since nausea is a common symptom of migraine, this one seems a bit redundant.

I like the words you shared. Iridescent is definitely part of my regular vocabulary. I use it to describe one of my favorite birds (the common grackle, not that special but has a personal meaning for me,) and lots of other things. Along the same lines are opalescent and pearlescent.

In an amusing coincidence, there is a baseball game on and the broadcasters just used the word affable.

Bungle is an awesome way of saying someone messed up. These are great words too.

Sometimes I really like homonyms that others wouldn't know...or weird animal terms.

A group of crows is a murder, for instance. And a female cat is a queen (dogs got short changed on the naming system here...)

Geese in a group are called by three different term depending on if they are in flight, on land, or in the water. A skein of geese is flying, a gaggle is walking, and a flock is swimming...I might be wrong about swimming, but the first two are right.

I'm loving the first and last phrases.

I have one I use that's an adaptation on "son of a b**ch." I am pretty sure I coined the phrase myself, but it replaces an animal based obscenity with a little known insect....the aphid.

And for anyone who knows about aphids, being called a son of an aphid is a double insult....but most people don't even know what an aphid is...so the degree to which you've insulted them is something they are clueless about...and that's fun.

Relevant.

Phrases and words I commonly use:
"If brains were dynamite, you wouldn't have enough to blow your ass out of a wet paper bag!" -Dad used to say that one

"You're truly a debit to your gender." - Heard the term in a song once and has since become a favorite insult of mine.

"Obstinate": Stubborn.

"Got me walking bowlegged!"--Depending upon the context, either a euphemism for really good sex, or need to use the restroom.

"Taking the Browns to the Super Bowl"--Another bathroom euphemism

"You must be from swamp country, because that joke sure "blue bayou"--Went over your head

"Dragging anchor today"-- I'm tired

I also tend to mix CB lingo (10 codes) into everyday conversation. This tends to irk people.
