Or the SJ flame, but maybe that, being simpler, should be for special mentions or joke awards.

I think your flame idea is actually better than a butler, at least in name terms - the winner of a category wins a "Golden Flame Award"

We tried that last year and we only got 3 nominations and 2 of them were ineligible for nomination.

"Alternate media," perhaps? I think 3D requires a different creation process, too, personally.

Alternate media may well open up a lot of opportunity for those that do make 3D comics and those that use photography as their base.

I know I did put up a link to suggest the photographic category to come back, but I had no idea my commenter would put it all in bold and so forth. I'm sorry for the over the top-ness, but then I am also flattered that she would go ahead and actually ask so strongly.

I was actually excited to see the awards, bummed out that there was no photographic category. Oh well, best of luck to all those nominated!

Mitani: While you might not have the chance to get recognition for being photographic this year, surely you could still aim for the other categories? :D

One of the reasons we can "exclude" certain categories if they're too small is that just about every comic, regardless of medium, has a shot at the genre categories, which are the real meat of the awards, where quality really comes into play. And isn't what we all want? More quality comics to read?

Hahaha - fair point. I don't really have specific goals in mind in that respect.

Either way yes the goal is better webcomics all round.
I can't wait to see how it all goes.

WELP, suggestions are over and you all did great! We got some old classics being nominated for new categories, which I expected. BUT there was also a slew of new comics that we didn't see last year! Good luck to those guys!

I hope you lot did a good job picking comics...because now The Committee has to spend the next 2 months reading them all.

Anyone have an opinion on how the awards should be presented this year?

Obviously the coolest idea would be to do what the Webcomic Awards does and have comic characters present the awards, buuuut we don't want to just rip them off. So what do we do? Keep it how it is, just do what they do but make it solely about Smack Jeeves, or put some sort of spin on that idea? What would you guys like to see?

Use Sir Jeeves to give descriptions and present the nominees. (WA isn't the first to do that 8P)

You COULD try to contact the past winners to give an additional description to the category a la what those TV awards do, but that would require additional work and has plenty of potential to go wrong. (They are also not permitted to plug anyone within their personal words for the sake of fairness and neutrality, etc.)

Alternatively: The panel of Judges can give their spins on it with their handles rather than with their characters.

Agreed--it's been done enough where it wouldn't be a bad thing, as long as it's well done. Maybe you could get the winners to at least draw one acceptance panel? (Girl Genius did a full page for when they won the Hugos, so...something like that. But smaller, whatever the artist's up to.)

Luck will definitely be needed. There were over 200 individual eligible comics nominated, that's a lot of reading to do!

Have a video done where each category is presented with all the sound effects and such. Video wouldn't have to be animated or anything, just a sort of slide-show deal with a bit more flare that would show off the pages of the comics and such. I could personally do the editing; all I'd need are the pics, recorded dialogue of people presenting each category, etc. I could present a category or two myself, if you need me to, but otherwise I'd be fine just making the vid.
