You have obviously not searched sj well enough.

Sprite comics are very well alive, but it's not just here. There's other places like dd, etc. Sprite comics can have their own website, depending on pop(sometimes), like b+g.

They're probably not dying, but they are starting to level off. I haven't been on the internet for a long time, but I imagine sprite comics probably took off after comics like Bob & George and everyone and their grandma wanted to get in on that. But I think some of the older spriters are moving on to other things and other kinds of comics like Nuzlockes and CYOAs are the new bandwagon genres everyone wants in on, so there's less interest in the genre. But just the same is true for gaming comics. Just because a lot of the gamer on a couch comics withered on the vine doesn't mean that gaming comics are dead. It just means that some of the people who were only in it for a quick buck or for easy fans realized how much work it is to make a good comic.

This, not sure if you were around during the Sonic vs. Nazo fiasco that got quite a few people banned.
Then there was the Lugbzerg vs Jesus lizard.
I know those flame wars are pretty dated but still...

A lot of people were banned, and a few of those people were very popular, which led to a lot of their friends leaving.
I haven't found a new sprite comic I've been able to get into lately anyway. Which I find really weird, because the default nowadays is Paint.net, which is a pretty good way to make some good comics.

I will say that the massive joint-author comic is dead.

Like, Sonic Author Resort.
Or Sonic *insert random place here* House.

I haven't checked in with Sonic Author Zone lately, I'm pretty sure that's dead too.

It got revived a month ago. Most of it's more popular authors are still updating it too.
As for the massive ban that was Sonic Nazo, I know one made a new account.

Sprite comics aren't dead. They live but in better quality and most of the ones I fav'd are either gimmick comics or have a legit update schedule.

I'm still making them. Even if it's been about a week since I updated.

I have seen spriters switch to drawn comics. Such as Apple, and her comic Quite Different. Im pretty sure A New Friend became a drawn comic as well.

Dead? Was not aware of that. Still updating myself and read a few that are updated as well. Though have been seeing less noobish ones as well as some of the older ones back in the day that have stopped.

There's also lots of new personal sprite showcases appearing lately, They have the usual stuff like Sonic, recolors, unfinished edits, sucky pixel art. They do get better with time but I don't see why you have to upload all of your current bad work instead of spending that time in getting better.

Whether or not sprite comics are dead is a hard question to answer; if you mean "Are people still making them?" the answer is definatly yes.
Personally, the only EXTREMELY popular sprite comic I've ever read was "Eight Bit Theater."
The fact is, sprite comics aren't exactly dead, but people have lowered they're expectations of them, because, well, EVERYONE'S doing it, and as a result, the vast majority of them are quite horrible. There are good sprite comics out there; you just have to be willing to look for them.

So in short, sprite comics aren't dead; people just think less of them nowadays. I myself am a spriter, and I find a lot of compatition. Not neccesarrily because it's always good; there's just SO much of it. If you're looking to make one yourself, I'd reccomend reading some first, so you know what to be influened by in the case of the good ones and what to aviod in the case of the bad ones, but one thing I can assure you is that the comics themselves won't be hard to find.

Sprite comics were assassinated by BL comics. May they rest in pixelated peace.

No genre of art can ever die. I don't like when people say that- like some graffiti artists claim 'graffiti is dead' but graffiti is as alive as ever- its just evolved beyond what the old timers remember it being and they're sad about it cuz they're old. ART CAN NEVER DIE- fight the pixel power!

Well, this comic went up, it was called Sonic vs. Nazo.

IT was terrible, like I can't put it into words I feel are safe to say.
A lot of the spritiers at the time, including a lot of the well known ones came and started helping.
I will say some didn't help, but went straight to flaming however...
The Sonic vs. Nazo author just deleted the comments, and wouldn't take the criticism.
This made a LOT of people angry, so the original helpers turned to flamers.
There was a threat to just ban sprite comics all together, because spriters tend to have a knack for not being the most level headed.
I'd recommend just searching it up, in fact, I'll do it right now.
Last time I checked the comic still exsisted, but after the massive flame war that occured on the last page he stoped updating.
I personally think the original author was a troll and wanted to see what would happen.
I can really only think of Matt Foxx and Stoopid mahn who got banned.

Found it, have fun.

I don't remember any of that during the Sonic vs Nazo drama, or at any time tbh, but my memory is quite fuzzy.

LMAO I never knew there was a mass war that happened in the sprite genre over 1 comic! Wow! I just read a bunch of the hate comments that kid got- that's really sad. People should just be able to make whatever comics or art they wanna make as long as its not hurting anyone. I understand people have the right to their opinions- but a huge croad of people flaming the living hell out of someone over a sprite page is awful... and awfully hilarious to me considering i could do the same kind of flaming to most of the 'artists' who are bashing.

And for the record- the sprite comic I created was infinitly worse then sonic vs nazo.
Spoiler! :
