The Comic Cliche

Postby 2die » February 18th, 2012, 12:55 am

I hope this is the right section to categorize this thread. If not, my sincere apologies.

Hello, SJ, I have a week of break and I am fairly bored and just thought up of a fun idea.
The idea?
Take all the comic/manga cliches and make it into one comic and see if I can pull it off.
(Probably not, but a person can try)
Since I don't read much comic/mangas, I can't say I know much about the trends and tropes regarding story-writing.
All I know is that about 99% of the webcomics I read take place in Japan.

Even if I fail miserably, maybe this thread can be used as a reference for future writers so they can stay away from the creation of a predictable and boring comic.

So please, list any and all the comic cliches you can possibly think of, and do feel free to rant.

I say this because it is in your best interest, but I worry about your health and sanity after going after such a horrifying task.

Now on other terms, a good stereotype to mess around with (because its so obnoxious) is the "Moe Desu Desu" characters. You know. The shy girls that are super adorable and blush easy and are about as deep and interesting as a wet carrot.

Make that your love interest!

EDIT: Or to make it interesting... make that the antagonist, haha.

If you hear about a death of a random person by the end of the week, assume that it's me.

Moemoedesu DEFINITELY SOUNDS WONDERFUL AS AN ANTAGONIST.

Give her big eyes and an oversized pink sweatshirt. THAT WILL SHOW THEM TRUE FEAR!

LOTS AND LOTS OF HEART-SHAPED HAIR CLIPS.
Shall she have pigtails? Or long and flowing hair?

HMMM. If you're going with craptons of hairclips, perhaps long hair? Then again she could wear clips in her pig tails too. XD

Here are some:

-Main guy has a skirt-chaser best friend(or just...guy who follows him around)
-Main girl just conveniently shows up when the plot requires her, in an unrealistic way
-Main guy is extremely dense

Even if you don't use any of those, I hope you do this comic, haha. Sounds like a good time.

Honestly just watch/read an episode of a mediocre anime/manga, and then you'll have it, no amount of text here will convey it faster than an example of it, cliches are cliches because they are terrible things used frequently or in the least entertaining way possible.

I'm also not quite sure WHY you want to work on a comic that encompasses all those traits when such parody/satire is a cliche in of itself.

Good time will be had. Thank you. -takes notes-

That is indeed true, but I rarely read manga, so I don't get much exposure to the "cliches" that are in the industry. And I don't want anime, unfortunately.
Even if I did read a mediocre piece of work, I'll probably be unable to tell if a certain thing is cliche or if it is just THAT specific manga, and therefore would establish the need to go through more comics before I get the grasp of the general repetition. Since I can't sit and read all the bad mangas and categorize the similarities, I thought it would be nice to ask the people who've read them to maybe give me a few examples, that is all.

WHY I want to do this? I don't know, I think I just have bad tastes and a masochistic sense of humor. Haha.

Let's think hard and a little objectively right now, and I mean this constructively-

Do you think you'll be able to formulate a good comedy criticizing or otherwise "using" cliches if you haven't watched, read or really digested any of the media? If that sounds a bit weeaboo, here's a better analogy, do you think a comedian will be able to tell good jokes about situations or subjects they've never experienced? How about an artist learning about anatomy but instead of going to the source material for reference (life drawing) they ask other people to draw realistic people for them to emulate?

You're welcome to still try it anyway since you say you're a masochist but it feels like you're needlessly breaking the rule of "writing what you know" and you've already admitted you don't want to look into it yourself. Again, you're free to try but I feel like I should still point this out to you- anyway, best of luck 8V

EDIT: As for others trying to tackle an intentionally "cliche" comic to deconstruct it or criticize or parody/satirize it, I still recommend the same advice, research it, find the cliches yourself, learn what they are and potentially why they are so that you can get an understanding of the subject and better employ it for yourself.

I deny nothing that is said here.

And yes, thank you, luck will be needed in this case.

Most of those things you have listed are not Cliche's. Look at different comics and see common things they have that are all over the place. They include Tenticle monsters using their tenticles for fighting and sex, expressly against schoolgirls, and magic schoolgirls in particular. Fangirls being obsessive, Geeks being absessive about other things. There are many more. Read Ghastly's Ghastly Comics. Watch Puni Puni Poamy. Look at the paroodies, they will show you the Cliche's being used together.

"I hear they're not even human!"

My brother and I were just waiting for someone to say that when we first started watching Claymore. Claymore, like some other anime/manga (not all; but most likely any with "demons") deals with the harsh topic of non-humans blending in with humans. It's a problem we are constantly facing in today's society. If the "fighters" in this comic aren't technically "human," (if it's that kind of comic, of course) be sure to use that line.

HEY THERE SIR WAIT A MINUTE.

Girlchan is the epitome of fantastic anime, and that you dare to post such quality on a forum about CLICHES is just blatantly insulting. I mean there's nothing cliche about it at all! Get your facts straight, and hopefully 'that explains everything'.
