General Food/Cooking

Postby SpiralPen » April 4th, 2012, 9:02 pm

I found a surprising lack of any kind of thread involving one of our basic needs to survive. So I decided to make one!
A thread where people can discuss Food and Cooking in general, I suppose. Ask if people know any good restaurants in their area, exchange recipe ideas, ask for cooking advice, etc.
If this topic sees any traffic maybe derivative threads can be made.

I figured I'd kick things off with some snack ideas for anybody who might happen to be hungry while reading this. I know most people don't like to eat healthy, but it really can taste much better than chips soaked in scientifically engineered brainwashing solutions. So if anybody wants to chew on something without worrying about their weight or health, here are some of my favorites.

Saltines with avocado slices on top.
Personally, my favorite saltines are the Sea Salt variety. Just make a plate of five or six crackers, cut open an avocado and put one or two thin slices on each one. It's really good and easy to go overboard eating, which you still shouldn't. It's healthy, but avocado can be fattening and there's a lot of salt on those crackers. Way better for you than chips and dip or Doritos, though.

Orange slices with a bit of cayenne pepper.
This one.... sounds kinda weird, but it really is pretty awesome. Sweet and spicy flavors offset each other very nicely and the result is much more satisfying and wholesome than just eating a bunch of really sweet orange slices. Be careful with the amount of pepper you use, though! Start with a little, you can always add more. (Protip: I usually peel the oranges before making this. Feels easier, somehow.)

Toast with hummus and seasoned tomato slices.
A lot of people don't buy hummus. A lot of people do. If you're of the former category, consider picking some up next time you go to the store (I'm sure there are several SJ members who know how to make it as well, including myself, if anybody wants recipes). This snack is pretty straightforward. Just make yourself a piece of toast, smear some of your favorite hummus on top and one or two tomato slices. For added flavor rainbows, I sprinkle a bit of salt, pepper, and just a pinch of basil on top of mine as well.

I don't think I've said "slices" enough yet.

Avocado slices with lemon or lime juice and seasoning.
Take yourself any old avocado. Remove the pit, scoop it out and put it on a plate. Cut it up. Drizzle lemon OR lime juice over top of it and season with a bit of salt and pepper. Now, certain places don't have as good of produce selection as others... I know the avocados where I live are pretty mediocre compared to California, for example. So this might not be for everyone.

BONUS NOT SO HEALTHY MEGA SNACK/MINI MEAL:

Pizza Bagel or French Bread.
This sounds obvious, but try doing this instead of buying pizza bagels or something else frozen next time. It really doesn't take much work or very long.
Chop up a little bit of garlic. A LITTLE bit. Mix it with butter and spread it on a bagel or a slice of french bread.
Smear tomato sauce of choice over top in desired amount.
Sprinkle a bit of red pepper flakes if you roll like that. Extra spice never hurt anyone.
Shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese goes on top of the sauce and if you want you could put some pepperoni or other toppings.
Put it in the oven on a tray/sheet and set it to 350.
Almost every oven is different, so wait times may vary. Just check on it every now and then. Not too much or the oven will lose heat, though.
BAM YOU GOT A PIZZA! (protip: this is much easier in a toaster oven because you can watch it cook, but I've never owned one.)

So if anybody else has recipe ideas, snack ideas, restaurant or cooking questions, feel free to post them here. Unless this gets taken down because there's an unused one laying around somewhere else!

I approve of this thread. I think we've had food and recipe threads before but they're long dead.

I myself generally suck at cooking, and it doesn't help that I, well... Like my friend Alan so eloquently told me some time ago: "You have the taste buds of a kindergartener."
In other words I'm incredibly picky and never really grew out of hating lots of condiments and foods like mayo and onions and whatnot. I mean I still try eating new things... Sauces, veggies, combinations and such, but I tend to be repulsed by them and go back to eating regular old hotdogs and burgers with nothing but K&M and Pizza with nothing more interesting than cheese or pepperoni.

I can make one hell of a mean burger though, haha.

Nobody said burgers and pizza have to be fancy!

I don't think I've ever ordered a pizza with anything but cheese in my life. What else do you even need?? When it comes to burgers, though, I prefer turkey ones.

WHA-BAM RECIPE TIME!

-ground turkey
-olive oil
-shredded carrot, onion, and garlic
-salt and pepper
-a little bit of ketchup

mix the FUCK out of it and make patties out of the result.

I usually use a bit of ketchup, spicy mustard, pickles, red onion, and pepperjack cheese as the burger toppings.

I'm average at cooking. I don't know any recipes by heart, but I can chop stuff and follow a recipe without killing anyone. By the way, did you know you can make scrambled eggs in the microwave? It's awesome. A hot homemade breakfast in less than two minutes, and you only have to dirty one dish.

That's insane. Especially because I can't cook eggs to save my life. Speaking of which, HOW'S Y'ALL EAT YOUR EGGS?

Alright, it's settled. Tomorrow I'll make the microwave scramble and see how well it works!
I'll take pictures so anybody who wants to make input for how it should be prepared, whether that be ingredients or some kind of special theme, hit me up now.
I will be the catalyst for your cooking fantasies. LET THEM FLOW INTO ME!

Used to be Scrambled only but within the past year Perkins made me fall in love with Over Hard.

Oh, and this isn't anything fancy, but a nice little trick I've done to make Scrambled Eggs tastier is before you cook them just mix a bunch of shredded cheddar cheese into the eggs. :D

Making scrambled eggs without cheese should be criminal. I can't eat them without cheese or tomatoes mixed in. They just seem too bland.

As for my own preference, I SEEK THE GOLDEN DRINK! Over Medium all the way, so it runs all over everything. Breakfast should always be kinky.

I usually eat them over a bed of wild rice with avocado, tomato, and garlic. Or I make breakfast hash, mix the over medium eggs in with potatoes/hashbrowns, melted cheese, ketchup, and sausage.

That's funny because Over Easy are the hardest little bastards to cook.
