Suggestions & Feedback Posting Guidelines
The purpose of this board is to allow community members to suggest new features or changes to be added to Smack Jeeves. Even if you aren't sure of a specific solution, but you recognize the need for an improvement, point it out!

Before Posting
Please browse/search the forum to make sure your suggestion hasn't already been made by someone else. If you find an idea similar to yours, post your contributing thoughts to that thread. Don't start a new thread unless your idea is significantly different from existing suggestions.

Rules

    1) Use a descriptive title when making a suggestion or pointing out the need for improvement.

    2) Describe the problem / solution in detail. First, explain why there is a problem or a need for a new feature to begin with. Then, describe your proposed solution (if you have one) clearly and effectively.

    3) Respect others' ideas. If you disagree with someone else's ideas or suggestions, respectfully and factually state why. While debate over different solutions is fine, insults or personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Sticky System
Suggestions that have been approved and chosen for implementation by the development team will be stickied. When development begins on an idea, that topic will be moved to the New Features & Changes in Progress board.

Front page genre filter

Sooo...yeah. I hope this hasn't been suggested already, I think it would be a pretty nifty way to allow users to customize the front page, where you can specify what kinds of comics you want to show up, and more importantly, what kinds of comics you -don't- want to show up, on your news feed.
For example, the updated comics section- I like to see newly updated comics, so I can check them out and see if I'm missing out on something I haven't seen before. But I find 90% of the comics don't pertain to my taste, so I end up ignoring it more often than not.
For example, I don't like certain styles or genres. So if there was a filter option for not displaying those on the front page to me (for example, being able to unclick certain genres from showing up) the latest updates I would see would be more of what I'm interested in, so those that I have interest in are less likely to be overlooked.
This wouldn't be the same thing as searching for specific types of comics- it would be automatic- you do it once, and then go back and change it as you see fit, but so long as you're logged in it's active.

I also think this would end a lot of complaints about people being sick of seeing >insert thing< crowing up the front page. Don't like BL? click off the 'romance' filter,' or maybe even a word-specific filter so that 'BL' or 'Sonic' or 'author' doesn't ever show up on the page to someone who doesn't want to see it. And it wouldn't be site-wide or irreversible- you'd still be able to view hidden genre comics if you clicked them from a profile or a 'related comic' banner, but chances are you wouldn't be searching for those things to begin with if you didn't like them. It wouldn't be policing the entire site either- it would be personal and customizable.

Just a suggestion, I know Drunk Duck has something like this, but Drunk Duck moves at the pace of molasses so it doesn't even really matter there.

I like this suggestion a lot. As a personal preference, I'd love to have it stored server-side and not as cookies, so that it would be consistent and portable.

I'm a bit wary of the word filter though, because it's too loose (excluding "BL" would also exclude all comics with the word "able" in their description, for example). I think that should be left off for now, and if we ever get a tagging system, tag-based filtering could be added to this.

If Scott Pilgrim was a webcomic on SJ and that I used a filter to take off EVERYTHING that has gay people in it. I would have never discovered the awesomeness of Scott Pilgrim.

I really don't get what you're saying. For one thing, BL does not = gay people in a comic, it is a comic FOCUSING on the relationships between gay men. The point is that people would be allowed to filter what they do any don't want to see based off genre...and 'gay' is not a genre on here, so they'd probably have to unclick romance. So if someone made the conscious decision to uncheck romance and missed the theoretical Scott Pilgrim, that would be their loss and their choice. I'm just suggesting that we give people the option.

ah, I don't know too much about word filters, but that makes sense. I'm glad you're interested though.

What I was trying to say, filter = narrow range of discoveries.

I am not absolutely against the idea. Thought, I think the site is already fine as it is.

Fix'd
The point is that users will decide for themselves and there's no reason they couldn't remove the filters.

That said, The Bearded Man's point does make me think it'd be highly beneficial if the filters were on the front page if possible. Rather than being on profile pages for example.

Oh, I was definitely suggesting front-page only. It doesn't seem like something that would work for profiles either...if you viewed someone's favorites for example and they like all stuff that you had filtered...I just think that it would be a handy thing to have for the front page ;D

Ah, I should've been clearer.
I meant the place where you could turn certain filters on/off should be on the front page if possible. So that you can adjust the filters easily, rather than having to go to profile settings to do so.

I agree with this. It could be a pop-up or a JS-based slide-out window thing, so the settings aren't always displayed.

Whatever works best and is most easily implemented. I just really like the idea- if you don't like it, turn it off. I imagine it will cut down the 'why is there so much _insert thing_ threads too. Who cares about yaoi or sprites if you can't see them, and those who do see them probably want to.
