I got an email about a download I have that wasn't exactly legal.

Spoiler! :
If you don't mind sharing... Torrent or direct?
If it was a Torrent, were you using a private Torrent site?
If it was a direct download that's pretty fucked up... I didn't even know those could be tracked.
You can PM me if you're okay with sharing but not openly.

Spoiler! :
It was Direct. I think it was a copy of Flash Portable(Which basically a free version of Flash, so it bones Adobe out of cash). At first I though it was horseshit and some asshole just sent it to me to be a dick but my Friend got one about audio tracks he downloaded for a song.

Well shit, that's... Bad. Now I'm gonna be paranoid about using Filecrop. :I

*EDIT*
Wow... I'm reading through that NSA thing and it honestly sounds downright scary. It's like our government is on it's way to becoming some evil, cliche, dystopian sci-fi government.

House passes CISPA

They're using fictitious "cyber terrorism" from North Korea to justify taking all of our rights away.

Image
Speaker John Boner (and it is Boner, I don't care if he pronounces it Bayner, that's not how it's spelled) says "Slave, you will learn to submit!" While an unnamed person in the White House replied "CISPA would trample the privacy and consumer rights of our citizens while leaving our critical infrastructure vulnerable. We need Congress to address this critical national and economic security challenge [sic.] while respecting the values of freedom, privacy, openness and innovation so fundamental to our nation."

Look at him. That smug son of a bitch. He disgusts me as much as a man can be disgusted by another man.

Part of me is wondering why there wasn't as big a backlash of CISPA as SOPA/PIPA. Why didn't it spread like wildfire through the social media and lead to mass call-in sessions? I'm signed up to receive emails from the same group that ran the SOPA/PIPA killing campaign, and I hardly got anything on this. All that happened was that I read a couple article on it and everyone commenting basically said "This bill sucks." The only real difference was that the big sites like Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia back this thing...

Oh.

The final tally was 248-168, enough to pass the measure but not enough to override the threatened veto.

Nothing's being implemented yet, guys. What I wonder is whether this will be sent to the president while Obama is still in office. If not, then we can worry.

Well... Darn. :( *braces self for what's to come*

I think another "protest blackout" or a "Black May" would've worked... I first heard this CISPA stuff while i was on vacation.
I await for a happier future...

Big business has been trying to get control of the Internet since 1995 when the government opposed the laws they proposed when it came to voting in 1996. The man who proposed those laws was a congressman who had been a lobbyist of theirs.

Then at the World Intellectual Property Organization that year the same guy who failed to push the plan through the American Government was there as the representative from the American Government, and tried to push it through there. The American government tried to stop him, and he was forced to back down by people from other countries.

I wonder, if the American Search Engines won't access these sites, how about a Search Engine from overseas? They won't be stopped from doing that.

Creating a specialty search engine like that would draw some people to sites that would otherwise be unnoticed.

On a more serious note: If the big businesses declare a crackdown on all sites using copyrighted material or characters, like fancomics here, has Smack Jeeves prepared?

What?! I hadn't heard about this! (Must've happened when I was at basic. Having almost zero contact with the outside world for eight and a half weeks tends to keep you out of the loop). What kind of bullshit is it that they send people like me overseas to "defend freedom" when they're killing it right here at home?

I'm predicting that sometime in the next 50 years, our government is going to push too far and people aren't gonna like it. I wonder what position other Armed Forces members will choose. After all, when we swear in for the oath of enlistment, there's a key line in there that states, "I will defend my country from all threats, foreign and domestic (roughly paraphrased, but you get the point)". If the threat is the people who are bankrolling you, what then? Do they act as though there's an exception clause?

I really don't like what I think the future of our country holds. All I can do is hope for the best, and steel myself for the worst.

The latest threat to the internet: http://boingboing.net/2012/08/25/leaked-tpp-the-son-of-acta-w.html

Related to ACTA, and enforces the worst of SOPA.
