Dark Shadows [2012]

Postby T1p2 » March 17th, 2012, 7:45 pm

Dark Shadows, an upcoming movie based on the gothic soap opera of the same name, will be released in theaters May 11, 2012...it will be directed by Tim Burton and will star Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins. Tim Burton has opted "for gonzo comedy that should please many but may rile fans of the original soap opera."

Cast:
Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, an 18th century vampire who awakens to the 20th century.
Thomas McDonell as young Barnabas Collins.
Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, a witch whose heart Barnabas breaks.
Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, the family matriarch.
Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, Elizabeth's "ne'er-do-well" brother.
Chloë Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard, Elizabeth's rebellious teenage daughter.
Gulliver McGrath as David Collins, Roger's "precocious" 10-year-old son.
Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Elizabeth's hired live-in psychiatrist.
Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, the manor's caretaker.
Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, David's governess.
Ray Shirley as Mrs. Johnson, the manor's elderly maid.
Ivan Kaye as Joshua Collins, the father of Barnabas Collins.
Christopher Lee as Bill Malloy, the manager of the Collins Fishing Fleet and Cannery.

A number of the original cast members of Dark Shadows will make a cameo appearance in the upcoming movie. Jonathon Frid (the original Barnabas Collins), Lara Parker (the original Angelique Bouchard), David Selby (the original Quentin Collins), and Kathryn Leigh Scott.

Here is the trailer.

My aunt loved the soap opera. She's none too pleased about this, though.

Looks horribly comical... that last trailer joke seems like something from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. xD They tried stoning me my dear... it did not work... Similar to the Go to hell you witch... and Aunt Hilda and Zelda's response of Just came back from hell... it's quite lovely this time of year.

It looks kinda like Tim Burton's noticed that a lot of his recent movies were awful, so he's trying to remind everybody of "Edward Scissorhands", with the fish-out-of-water theme of a spooky dude in suburbia, the retro setting, and so on, except that Johnny Depp doesn't play anybody but Jack Sparrow anymore. He used to have such a varied range, but I think the last part I saw him play that wasn't basically Captain Jack was Willy Wonka, and that wasn't all that impressive either.

Honestly I think Tim Burton's problem is that he gets credit for a lot of things that really weren't his; most of his good movies were collaborations with Harry Selick--Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, and so on. Look at what they've done since splitting: Tim Burton's done "Planet of the Apes", "Alice in Wonderland"...Harry Selick did "Coraline".

^ This.

This is nothing like the Dark Shadows I'm used to, but I am okay with that. The trailer got a chuckle out of me, which is fairly impressive. I am looking forward to renting it at the very least, as it seems like my sort of comedy. Hopefully it won't attempt to be a serious movie :|
Busy, busy.

My mom loved the original thing, but I saw the trailer and thought, "Wow this looks awful."

I had no interest in it before knowing it was a comedy, but after seeing a few commercials I'll admit I think it looks a bit funny. The part with the TV managed to get a laugh out of me.
I wouldn't go super out of my way to watch it or anything, but I'd watch it if it were on Starz someday or if my Mom rents it. :P

Initial reviews are mixed; it sounds like if you're wishing for a Tim Burton movie, you will get exactly what you want, and that's the best anybody can say about it. Might be good, unless you're hoping for something mind-blowing.

I've been trying really hard to only pay money to see good movies, since I'm sick of the awful feeling that I put money in Michael Bay's pockets--hell, I gave him a vote of popularity, increasing the chances that he'll continue to direct. Now I'm trying to only go see movies that are worth seeing. Join me if you want Hollywood to go back to making good movies instead of making crappy movies with famous names--you know, things that make you think, "wow, that looks awful, but I'm such a fan of (insert fandom) I have to see it anyway." Don't do that!

I saw this! It was better than I thought. I have not seen the soap opera myself, so I cannot tell how satisfying it will be to fans of the original soap. But if do not care, then it is a very funny movie and not a bad watch. To me, it did not seem like a traditional Tim Burton movie. The only thing original about it is that Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam Carter are cast in it. But, not a bad movie.

He was supposedly good in Rango. The difference between that movie and this one is that he wasn't collaborating with Burton with Rango. I think Tim Burton is suffering from whatever George Lucas has, the "Surround myself with my buddies, yes men, and studio execs that will let me put out whatever I want because my name alone is enough to get asses in seats" syndrome.
