How can people even use ink pens?

Postby EromCX » June 11th, 2012, 12:46 pm

My digital pen ran out of tip and I have no money to buy refills because the ingrate people reading my comic didn't donate

I tried an ink pen (Those things you put inside a can of black ink and keep refilling) and it's a disaster!!! I can't even make lines with that, it runs out of ink in an instant and you have to put a lot of effort for ink to descend from it's "vagina" :o
Honestly how can people ink with that?

The nib is not the straigh G usually used in manga, it's the spoon type, will i have better luck with the G nib?

...Vagina? That's a new one.

Are you sure that pen isn't broken?

You can just use felt tips you know, and vary the lines by doubling over.

I think I've used something like it when I used to do calligraphy. They take some learning and practice, so you'll have to find resources online and work with it until you get the hang of it. Seeing some of your work, you probably could make due with a technical pen set. They are ink pens with different tip sizes. Take less time to get used to.

Oh, and I've heard that you can use toothpicks and weedeater cable to make replacement nibs for your digital pen.

I've always preferred using a brush. If you use the quill for long enough you'll get used to it, but I was never partial to it. I think the industry standard for inking quills is #5 crow quill though, if you want to try that.

I'm poor and I suck at using traditional tools, my artist career has come to an end

What's wrong with just using regular pens and pencils if you're that poor?

I don't use anything fancy, my pens cost whatever they cost at the beginning and the ink refills aren't that expensive, and I just replace the nibs if it seems to be really deteriorated. It's as expensive as you want it to be, really.

as for how people use ink pens- they practice it and learn how to. Kind of like using any other tool, really.

I cannot draw with a pencil, even if you use to rubber to undo mistakes the page will go blurry in no time...it's too dirty and I simple don't have patience for it...

Like mitchellbravo said, I think using regular pens works pretty well! I mean if you're having that much trouble with the fancy stuff, why not go for something simpler and cheaper?
Uniball Signo and Frixion (which is awesome 'cause you can erase the ink, too!) flow pretty well and don't require tons of pressure.

You might be bearing down too hard. Draw really lightly, go a little darker for the actual form, ink it, then erase the pencil lines.

Having patience is a pretty important trait for art, though. The only way you get better is by making mistakes and then figuring out how to not make them the next time.

Every medium is going to have its drawbacks. The trick is that you have to actually give enough of a shit to figure out how to use them properly and avoid the drawbacks. You can't just jump into one of them and automatically be a superstar, it takes time to use a medium properly. That's why kids in schools get crayons and washable markers and simple pencils and pens instead of high-end equipment.

I'll be honest with you, not being able to draw even with a pencil is kind of a bad sign. If the erasure marks are what bother you, wean yourself off of using the eraser *even if you make a mistake*. Leave the mistake there. Open up a sketchpad or just some cheapass paper sitting around and just practice drawing a thing over and over until you don't make that mistake, or at least until you get good enough that the mistake doesn't bother you anymore.

Your tablet pen ran out of tip huh?
chances are if you have a wacom brand they have spare nib tips in the pen stand.

How can people even use ink pens?

Uh... personally that's all I like using? XD

My digital pen ran out of tip and I have no money to buy refills because the ingrate people reading my comic didn't donate

Digitals can run out? That confuses me, aren't they just like... stylus thingers and you draw with that? how does that "run out", and if you were going digital, why would you use anything that could run out? Isn't the point of digital to get rid of that aspect?

I tried an ink pen (Those things you put inside a can of black ink and keep refilling) and it's a disaster!!! I can't even make lines with that, it runs out of ink in an instant and you have to put a lot of effort for ink to descend from it's "vagina" :o

Oh dear... well, that means you were pressing hard. WAY TOO HARD. In fact, you probably broke the nib if you've done that for long enough. Okay, to make it put out more ink (if its a single-size and isn't flexible like some of mine are), tilt it so that the side that the ink is cupped in is facing the side and lower the angle degree distance of the pen's back versus the paper. A slang term for it is "milking it". It's wasteful, but it works and, though ink gets used up fast, it isn't instantly gone. Otherwise, make sure your pen isn't 90 degrees upright, and make sure that the ink faces in whatever direction is slightly slanted upwards. Scratch a practice paper lightly, but use slightly more force until you finally make a line. Practice that until you can make a consistent line. This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to a week to figure out exactly. once you have it figured out, it gets to be second nature really fast.

Personally, I find the Gs easier to use, but not quite as dynamic.
Also, MAKE SURE YOUR INK ISN'T INCREDIBLY THICK. There is a "too thick" for pens, and it makes it so the ink doesn't come out. I should know, I make my Inks from scratch now, with stones, muds, and ink sticks, so I have A LOT of experience with that.

The main thing though, is if you have no money to buy even one tool, you probably shouldn't be so picky and just deal with using whatever you do have. Asking for donations is like... telling people you want money because you don't wanna have to pay even a little bit to make your comic, and if there isn't hundreds of fans, that doesn't go well. lol. Ask for donations only when you NEED it - like colledge troubles, broken computers, things like that. I've never read your comic before, but if it doesn't have a lot of pages and fans, you probably won't find anyone who thinks you've put so much into your work that you'd need a hand [i have like no pages, lol, so im one of these XD]. Try a part-time job or something. They're more consistent [is why i have one lol] and you can draw in your free time still. good luck with you're inkings and things!~
Tell Everybody I'm on my way, whatever way that may be - be it the road less traveled by, or the road I'll someday die. As long as I'm amused, I'll be fine.

They have plastic tips that eventually wear down. I'm assuming that's what he meant by it "running out." It takes quite a while for it to happen, but eventually rubbing plastic on plastic wears the tips down. They come with replacements, but they are really really tiny and really really easy to loose. (As I know all too well from experience.)

Yeah, the tip of my pen is running out too.

Apparenly you can call Wacom for new nibs or something.
