Now I need to go try some of those others...there's just something about trying new editors (even if they're not as good as one already in use) that is fun.

Speaking of fun, ArtRage is enjoyable, although I'd never use the free edition to make comics.

I dunno if this is the place to mention this or not since it's only animation software but I will anyway just in case. Apparently Plastic Animation Paper Pro 4.0 (Windows only, sadly) is free now. It was announced on a couple animation blogs that I've come to respect but I have no clue whether or not the software is good.

PAP:Pro 4.0 is released for free

We, the PAP developers feel it is time for us to look ahead, and explore what the next generation of PAP should look like, and how it should work. We currently have no time frames for the development work, and we're looking for partners to help us develop it. Please email us with any input you have at ideas(at)plasticanimationpaper(dot)dk.

In the meantime, we want to thank our loyal supporters and the animation community. We are therefore from today releasing our latest and greatest edition (PAP:Pro 4.0) for free. This version is for Windows only, and will not require any registration or purchase. You are free to use it on as many PCs as you want, for anything you want (home, school, professional). We offer this release with no support except for what you can find in the old website. New users make sure to check out our tutorials.

Seems worth looking into if you're interested in FBF animation and don't want to pay for Flash or Toon Boom.

Photoshop isn't available free...legally.
Though if there is some legal free version that maybe has reduced features or functions removed then by all means you can give us a link and we'll include it.

SBM: There is no legal free version of Photoshop. The closest thing is Photoshop Express, but that is NOT suitable for drawing, it only has photo-editing tools.

There are free trials of PS and PS Elements available, that's it. The only ways to get free PS (other than through a school with a student licence) are illegal.

For animation, there is a program called Pencil ( http://www.pencil-animation.org/ ) that is good for basic 2-D animation. I dunno if it would help anybody, but it is very fun to experiment with.
There is also a extremely basic program called Piknik ( http://www.picnik.com/ ) that is nice for very basic photo editing and adding text. It is very good for cleaning up pencil sketches and the such.

You should also note that pencil is very crash happy. I only advise it for black and white animation as the paint fill tool screws it up a lot.
As far as spriters go, I think you should advise Game Maker. It's a brilliant spriting technology that can show you a grid for your sprites, naturally it lets you make games without code knowledge and it's available for mac, heck yeah!

Version 2 is free for usage,but you have register to remove the watermark, not completely sure if that is still there. Unsure about version 3. The license to remove the watermark costs money.

I just remembered this and posted it in a different thread, but Autodesk is giving away all of its applications free to students this year. They grant a license that lasts for about three years, and I think they've really got the right idea doing it. It's basically like a test drive until you graduate college, where you can then purchase a full version if you choose, because you've spent those three years learning about the program. Way to go, Autodesk!

So basically, Maya, 3DS Max, AutoCAD, and a variety of other programs are free to college students. This might be helpful to artists wanting to branch out to modeling, or people who just want to have some subtle 3D elements in their comic.

Autodesk definitely has the right idea there, but it's a genius marketing move as well - get the broke students hooked on their products rather than giving them reason to go for Blender, etc, and they'll eventually have no choice but to get their software later because they'll be so used to it. This is part of why interfaces between competing software packages are so different xP I learned Maya as part of a class in highschool, and when I couldn't use that anymore and tried to move to Blender... I basically died, and still haven't been able to find my way around that program after many tries. Needless to say, I am very happy that I get to use Maya again for three years. I missed doing 3D.

Another awesome thing - Blender can import/export Maya/3DS files. This means that even after the 3-year licence expires, you'll still be able to use all your models. And if you make everything you need in Maya during these 3 years, you won't even need to learn Blender for modelling, just using it to render the views you need will be enough, and you can pick Blender up as you need it later on.
