About Me

Rica is a self-employed starving artist in her mid-twenties who drinks too much coffee and dreams about one day showing her comics to Scott McCloud.

She loves british comedy, bad humor and the color green. Currently she lives in the southern suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden with her code monkey and their daughter Molly the Boobcat. When she isn't busy drawing she... actually, that's all she does.

...or as it'll be known as from now on, Herring Taco.

Yes, it's us! We're back! The hiatus went on for much longer than anticipated — people died, people were born, Rica is halfway through a BA in psychology — but now finally we're here and we're more prepared than ever!

This transition comic was made especially for those of you who stuck by us (hello? Bueller?) and won't be posted anywhere else or even linked to on the new comic site! While we haven't been able to stick to all our promises that we made almost two and a half years ago, we're finally in a position where we can bring all that to life!

The script has been rewritten. The format has been reworked. The comic will have a five page updating schedule as soon as Rica is done with school (so in six months or so) and most of all, there will be ways to purchase both the comic and whatever assorted merchandise we'll make available as we continue on this magical journey.

Thank you so much for sticking by us. I never would've imagined that a silly comic I made on a whim so long ago would've made such a difference in my life, and we've only just started. I hope you'll enjoy Herring Taco as much if not more (please more, or all this work has been for nothing!) as you did Black Jack Switch and that you'll continue to stick by us on this new, fantastical adventure.

The first Black Jack Switch! was published exactly one year ago today.

When we started this we had no idea where it would go - there was literally nothing but a vague idea and a desire to see if we could keep something up for more than a week. Aside from a few doodles and an illustration the characters were designed on the spot, and once we ran out of buffer (about a month in) practically every strip was scripted, sketched and finished on the day it was scheduled to go up.

The months passed by, and now it's a year later. Words cannot describe how amazed we are at the response - with no advertising, no plan and definitely no purpose we've gone through 135 strips and somehow swooped up 100 fans in the process. It's more than we ever anticipated - and that brings us to the very reason for this hiatus. We want to do more with the comic. A lot of things have happened over the last year, and between the drastically evolving art style and the lack of planning it just feels like BJS would benefit greatly from an overhaul. We have so many ideas for this comic, but with the way things are now there's no way we can realize them. Hence… the hiatus.

What this means for the future

• New content. While we are starting it over from strip 001, the script itself has been heavily re-written. The story-lines are being polished, new scenes are being added and some things are just plain changed for the better.

• New, more consistent style. As much as we love the current look, it has grown increasingly restrictive and time-consuming. The new style will battle both of these problems.

• Possibility of merchandise. So far we've looked at everything from donation wallpapers to postcards and t-shirts. We're also thinking about eventually releasing a print-edition of the comic sometime in the future.

Five-days-a-week-updates. This is the big one - by taking a break we'll have a chance to build up a buffer and give you a Monday-to-Friday updating schedule rather than the Tu-Th-Sa we've had for the past few months. This also means that those of you who are eagerly waiting for the resolution of the disappearance of Jamie's cock won't be waiting forever!

Our plan is to re-launch the comic in June. An exact date will be announced as we get closer to the finish line, but if you want to keep tabs on the process and see some sketches and stuff we've set up a Black Jack Switch! tumblr for that very purpose! We'll also do a post of some kind here on SmackJeeves once we have a set date, if that's more your cup of tea.

If you have any questions, please feel free to comment and we'll do our best to answer them!

Much love!

Just to clarify things: Anton did not in fact steal Jamie's dong. That would be gross and potentially hazardous.

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE! Black Jack Switch is turning ONE YEAR on Wednesday and we're celebrating with a very special, world-changing announcement! Keep your eyes peeled!

And there you have it, folks. Jamie's still straight as a... a really straight thing, just not when he's drinking heavily - then anyone's game. Trust me, you do not want to take him to bingo night without a fire extinguisher close by.
