The Drunken Horse is a venue for (particularly terrible) local bands.
The shopping cart scene, just like Sliver’s cutoffs and band name, is a reference to Arrested Development.

Is it me, or does Ben Affleck’s Daredevil outfit look like an awkward fetish suit? Regardless, that’s probably what Hooker was going for.

Gretel has never driven a car, but she rides a snazzy moped!
@Jaymzeecat: Thanks a bunch, will do my best! :)

This is the most depressing bonding moment ever. Nihilist Greg’s got NOTHIN’ on this kid.

Originally, Sliver was the one who was supposed to keep Roddy company; however, Dorioth is relates a lot more to Roddy’s loneliness/abandonment issues (whether he is better with kids is seriously debatable).

Next page is a scene change - and it’s gonna be lots of fun! :D

With the help of his third eye, Roddy has the ability to alter’s people’s visual perception. He can make himself (or other objects) “disappear”, by temporarily erasing images from people’s minds. He uses this trick to sneak out of his house at night (and that’s where the bruises come from, as he is clumsy and bruises like a peach).

Roddy was born with his heart outside his ribcage, and has spent many a day in a hospital. He is very sickly and unsettlingly aware of his mortality.

So, here's why I decided to redo the first 2 pages of Chapter 6:

Warning: Personal babble ahead!

I started Ball & Chain after a break-up with a manipulative, emotionally-abusive person. I felt super isolated and disenchanted -and the least self-destructive thing I could do in order to cope with my anger was draw people beating the shit out of each other in a gladiator arena. Poetic, I know!

The relationship between Dorioth and Sliver, now that I look back, would have worked so much better as magical platonic friends tied together by a really intense adventure (which is what I will be trying to go for now). Considering that Dorioth lead her on and then ditched her for other girls when he KNEW of her feelings, he just makes a shitty choice for a romantic lead. I had a helluva time justifying his actions, and NO. Just no. I can’t!

I grew up. I need to let my characters grow up with me.

In light of this realization, I felt it was necessary to have a (female) character that’s able to say, no, you treated me like shit, this won’t work - and address her problems head on.

I’ve tried really hard to make Dorioth likeable in the latest chapter (in a cocky, heroic-fail kind of way), but that doesn’t excuse his behaviour towards Sliver. I like the character and I regret writing him like this. :( Curse you, past self!

Thank you all for your support and understanding in this matter! I will now move on to page 8 - after a bit more angst, the chapter will have some fun Gretel bits! Yaaay!

Dance Off is an (imaginary) video game that resembles Mortal Kombat, but with like, DANCING. Dorioth’s copy (which he probably got from Pilot) is poorly translated and obviously amazing.

Sooo… This is the page 1 redo. It is significantly sillier and much less angsty. Don’t worry though - the angst is coming.

In case you forgot (because of author neglect) Sliver plays violin! She and Hooker form the band Never Nude (a reference to Arrested Development, one of my favourite shows …excluding season 4, because that one let me down real hard).

Also, HOOKER!!! He will appear later in the chapter. Can’t wait.

I’m glad I ended up changing some things from the original sketch page - I LOVE that last panel!

Pilot’s hair is a very pale blond (a colour similar to Gretel’s, in fact). He is a hardcore germaphobe and values cleanliness (which makes his visit to Gretel’s den seem all the more courageous).

Pilot carries/wears goggles to protect from possible injuries while doing telekinetic origami. His design is an homage to my childhood love for the Digidestined and their stylin’ goggles. His Digimon would probably be a turnip or something equally useless.

I have mad respect for fanfic authors. :) Well, most of them. Gretel’s writing is probably more entertaining than it is good …like a benign, well-developed train wreck?
@MadMindInk: Thanks a bunch! I have too much fun writing those thought bubbles. :)
@MadMindInk: I'm so glad you enjoyed my comic! Coming from you, it means a lot. Denizens! Attention! was/is one of my favourite webcomics, and I absolutely love your art. Can't wait to see your next project! :)

The mouthless girl was inspired by a nightmarish part of Cloud Atlas (the book), where a post-nuclear baby is born without a mouth.

Also, Roddy is very poorly socialized and does not really know how to approach other children.

At long last - updates are baaaack!!! I've been creating a small page buffer and I'm super excited to finally get the story rolling online again.

I’ve written their explanations over and over again, but it is very hard to justify Dorioth’s behaviour and Sliver’s withdrawal. On the other hand, they are people who weren’t properly socialized and probably know very little about maintaining healthy relationships. They’re not perfect, and they both made poor choices (well, Dorioth more so than Sliver)!

This scene took FOREVER to script. I consider Chapter 2 (and the abrupt, vague fallout between Sliver and Dorioth) one of the weakest things in the Ball and Chain series. Over the past year, I’ve had a hell of a time trying to salvage the story while keeping Dorioth a somewhat sympathetic character. Curse you, past self!
