When refining the characters you see here in Oh Brother! we can't forget about Chris. There's a bit more to Chris than you've seen so far.

Chris & I were born only a year apart from one another and have always been close. Best friends in many ways and bitter rivals in other ways I suppose. You take the good with the bad in siblings, you know? If there is one word I hear used to describe Chris most often it may be "flake". That really upsets him and it's not a truly accurate description of him ... though I know why people think that it is. A fault I've seen in my brother Chris is that he has trouble at times looking ahead to where his actions will lead. It's not a matter of living in the now as much as it is an overactive impulsiveness.

My wife and I use this example sometimes. It's as though Chris is hiking on a trail and there are signs he's supposed to follow posted on the trees and all about. He gets distracted by one thing or another and misses one of his signs. This leads him to the wrong trail which then leads to another wrong way etc. By the time he realizes his mistake he's so far off it'll take a long time to get back to where he went astray let alone farther along the correct path. That keeps him from reaching his goals quickly which makes him more anxious to make up for lost time which causes him to miss another sign and start the cycle all over again.

That led to a wonderful visual for today's comic. I left the first two panels sparce of background 'cause I thought it would convey that Chris was so concerned about being in control of the situation that he missed the obvious warnings. Looking at it now I'm not sure that was the best move. Still, the comic says what it needs to and gives you a closer look and one of Chris' little quirks that I've not yet dealt with.

I've had my fun at Jim's expense for a while and for good reason. Jim is one of those types of people that is simply ripe for parody. A dear friend of mine summed it up perfectly when she said "...your brother is a terrifying punchline. A living breathing stereotype of a pathetic loser."

This is frighteningly accurate and everyone can see it but Jim. That's the real humor. His being a Trekkie, his fan boy geekiness of Star Wars, his devotion to sci-fi cons and renfair, the way he dresses, how he lives (and smells), his fairly childish manner about everyday life (by which I mean immature and infantile) are well known to anyone that meets him and is the recipe of the traditional dork or comic book geek that you envision whenever you try to imagine what one looks like.

To his defense, however, he's not like that all the time. Often enough to warrant picking on him sure, but not 24-7. Hard as it may be to believe for those that know him he can be just a normal fun guy from time to time. I know, I've seen it. I wish he'd be that way more often. Nonetheless it just goes to show that there is a brain at work underneath that stereotype and when he chooses to fire up the grey matter he can make a good call.

So today we see a sampling of that. Jim comes out on top by actually knowing what he's doing while my ego gets Chris & I farther into trouble.

High on a hilltop (or wherever you'd like to be) contemplating life, the universe, and everything can lead to some strang realizations. It can also bring about some foregone conclusions. For example, no matter how intense the world seems or profound your train of thought may be there will always be some dope out there with a thought pattern all their own and no appreciation for the wonder and beauty all around them that is causing your contmeplation to begin with who forces you to realize the true nature of this worlds stupidity.

I'm no sure if this is really a comment about Jim being fat or Jim being lazy. Either way I've seen him get an exhausted look on his face just talking about having a full day before and it's just too funny to think that he's wiped from the idea of doing stuff let alone actually doing any of it.

As often as I've picked on my brother Jim for being a Trekkie I felt it was time that he had a laugh on me for it. While he'd still be a total embarrassment I have to admit there would be few more appropriate times to be with him in costume than this one.

Oh yeah. My aliens can do anything!

In nearly every comic I've read or cartoon I've seen when someone is camping they use the rain joke. That's the joke where they arrive on the perfect sunny day then it rains like crazy for a week. Frustrated the family gives up and packs it in only to have the sun come out again just as their heading home.

I think this joke is overused. So I said so.

Sometimes when you're doing a story arc you simply need to advance that story. In times like those it's difficult to be the right kind of funny. In this case I needed to get us into the woods. It's a long way to go for a silly joke, but there we are.

Lookit! The little aliens that I rule over officially have their own font! How cool is that? No, I didn't create that font I found it. Still it's perfect for this moment and the difference in the dialog balloons seems to help it look more alien to me. My aliens can do anything too. Like trap Jim & Chris in a stasis bubble in mid fight. I rule over very cool aliens.

As for my brothers and I, yeah, it's all been leading up to this. Were going camping! We used to camp quite a bit as a family when we were kids but not so much anymore. In my adult years I've done some camping but not too much of it with the family. My wife & I mostly though I've been camping in Montana with my mother and Jim and that was interesting. My family can manage to have fun together when we put our minds to it.

Today I remembered something very funny.

There was a moment not too long ago where my wife & I were enjoying a very pleasatnt evening at home together. It was one of those nights where everything seemed about right and the only thing that really mattered was being together. Good evening for us.

But not for the boys. Next day I was treated to a story by Chris that told of he and JIm having an all out fist fight only a mile and a half away from the perfect evening the Guinn & I were having. Seems that one of them said something to the other that set things off and before they knew it they were tossing one another about the room and trying to land the best punch.

That moment in time is long over and I'm sure they've made up and all but I found it inspirational here. I also thought it very funny that in one home a perfect evening was happening while in another a fight broke out. People truly fascinate me.
