I didn't even have to invent the joke for this comic. Stephen Fry explains.

Whether it's true or not is uncertain - it's one of those stories that tend to circulate around big personalities like Churchill and you can't really verify it. Winstonchurchill.org has a whole a LIST of them which you should read because there are some really good ones in there.
I really can't stress this enough. VIKINGS DID NOT WEAR HORNED HELMETS. They did NOT. It was not a thing. They didn't do it. No no no no no no no no NO. No horned helmets. NONE. Not a one. Not a single goddamn one.

Real viking helmets will have looked like THIS or THIS because there's nothing in the world dumber than a helmet with freaken HAND-HOLDS your opponent can use to drag you to the ground.

YouTuber CGPGrey explains why horned helmets are dumb (along with other things) in this excellent video that you should watch because CGPGrey is funny and brilliant. Then watch his other videos.
If you've watched the movie 300, your impression of the Spartans is probably that they're an army of walking testosterone-bombs that kill Persians with one hand and pleasure women with the other while both their feet kick ass in opposite directions.

The reality is not... quite like that. The Spartans had... A LOT of man-sex. Like, REALLY a lot. All of Greece did. There's a pretty decent (and long!) article about it right over [here] if you want to read more about it.
If you want the shorter version, American PBS has you covered.
What most people remember about the Vikings is the raiding and the pillaging and the taking over of England. The Vikings DID do a lot of that, but what they did even more of was settlement and colonization. Needless to say, the British weren't super thrilled about it.

If you wanna know just how much they settled, take a look at this list of English place-names that stem from Viking colonization. Or this list of Viking words that made their way into the modern English language.

And the weekdays! Sunday and Monday, that's "Sun-day" and "Moon-day" obviously, and Saturday is "Saturn's Day," which you got from the Romans.
Tuesday, though, is "Tyr's Day," and Tyr was an old Norse god. Wednesday is "Wodin's Day," or "Odin's Day." Thursday is "Thor's Day" and Friday belongs to either Frey and Freya (who were fertility-gods) or Odin's wife Frigg.
King Christian VII is generally thought to be the result of one too many cousins marrying each other. The polite way to put it is that he maybe wasn't the best king ever. The impolite way is that he was a ███████ who ██████ and ████████████ with ███████ ████████████ ███ and really bad breath.

Dr. Johann Friedrich Struensee got into the royal court through some contacts in the nobility, then basically spent two years running things behind the scenes and banging the king's wife.
So the polite thing to say is that he maybe wasn't the most loyal doctor ever.
Struensee did try to use his despotic tyranny to do some good. He tried to abolish noble privilege, torture, unfree labour and censorship of the press and all kinds of other things that were basically guaranteed to make everybody in power hate him. So he was executed pretty quickly.

They made [a pretty good movie] about Struensee and Christian VII - it even got nominated for an Oscar.
Usually when we think of monks, we think of pious dudes hanging out in monasteries, praying, sweeping things up and not having any sex in any way.

Go back a few centuries, though, and read some of those monks' essays about how devoted they are to Jesus and things get real steamy real fast. You might think I'm exaggerating the comic for the sake of comedy, but you'd be wrong. Monks really did say shit like this.

Except they probably wouldn't use words like "fo' sho'"

I made that bit up.
Henry VIII had a thing about wives. For starters, he had quite lot of them. For another, he split with the Catholic Church (kind of a big deal at the time) because pope Clement VII wouldn't let him divorce his wife.

Henry VIII is probably my favourite British king. I mean, what other monarch had his own touring band?

In case you want to watch a great documentary on British history, and SHUT UP YES YOU DO, then Simon Schama's "A History of Britain" is your first stop.
His episode on Henry VIII and religious schisms can be found [right here], but the whole thing is available on the channel and I don't know why you wouldn't watch it.

Choco-doodle - project-starter and banner-designer extraordinarie! - is back. Circumstances mandated that this be done in pencil, rather than all the digital glory we've come to know and love, but I think you'll all agree it is of no detriment to the quality.

ART: Also Skyen

A deviantARTIST had promised me this page, but due to unforeseen circumstances (including but not limited to being thrown off a freaking horse) was not able to deliver. I resolved to get things moving again, so I to quickly and chibi... ly did the page.

This is quick and somewhat sloppy, but no matter, we move on. Move move move on.

Gwennafran, being the consistent producer of quality material that she is, produced this along with the previous page. A year ago. I still really can't get over that.

ART: Gwennafran

This was drawn a year ago. A YEAR. That's a pretty long time. Some would say it was because I failed to generate enough interest in the comic, but I prefer to think elves did it. With... fairy dust. Or something. Elves are wily.

Gwennafran is a pretty consistent producer of quality material, including comics. I would say it's worth your time checking out her art. I really do think you should. For your own sake.

This is Choco-doodle, suckers, and she cranks these things out like novelty plastic mugs on a Chinese production-line! You better STEP AND RESPECT, 'cause talent like this don't come along every day.

I considered making it "anarcho-syndicalist commune", but I thought maybe that'd be a bit on the nose.
This page by physicist KitAlda who knows a lot more about physics than you, pal, 'cause she invented it. And then she perfected it so that no living professor could best her in the ring of particle-acceleration!
